What are the mandatory servicing required for the Genesis

I have a 2009 Genesis, 6 cylinder. I'm at about 65,000 miles now and while I've taken it in for oil changes regularly, I haven't attended to anything other than that the brake fluid was changed in a recall notice and original battery finally gave out a couple of months ago. Here's the list of tasks from the service schedule:

The 60K service at the dealer is really pricey. What do you folks recommend?

Ask the dealer what they charge for an inspection. Shouldn't be that expensive.

Things you can do on your own:
Replace Air Cleaner Filter
Replace Climate Control Air Filter (for evaporator and blower unit)

Service technician:
Replace Coolant
Replace Engine Oil and Filter
Replace Fuel Filter
Replace Fuel Tank Air Filter
Replace Rear Axle Fluid
Replace Spark Plugs (Iridium Coated)

The few times I have taken my car to the Hyundai dealer for service or recalls, they have done the inspections for free and provided a checklist of what they inspected. They are looking for additional service items they can perform to increase their revenue.

Even if they didn't do the inspection for free, I would not pay anyone to do it, assuming the owner can check the following themselves:

• Inspect Brake Fluid Level (without opening the reservoir). If more is needed, use only Hyundai DOT-4 fluid.
• Inspect Coolant Level (not mentioned in your list). If more is needed, dilute properly with distilled water and only use OEM Hyundai Coolant. Only add to the reservoir and when the engine is completely cold.
• Inspect Tire Pressure and Condition

The above also assumes that engine oil and all filters (oil, air, cabin) are replaced according the maintenance schedule.

I would also have a good tire shop do the tire rotations (Costco or Discount Tires are two good ones). I would not let any dealer mess with my tires except in a dire emergency.

Also, if you plan to keep the car beyond 100k miles then I recommend having transmission fluid/filter changed every 70k miles.

IMO, the transmission fluid change (special synthetic fluid), spark plugs, and coolant flush should be done a dealer. Since you have a 2009, it requires Hyundai DOT-4 brake fluid (due to recall), so I would have brake jobs done by dealer also.

Engine air filters, cabin filter, are DIY jobs. Oil changes on the 2009 V6 are relatively easy also, but make sure you use the OEM oil filter.

Although it sounds excessive, you should replace the cabin air filter (in glove box) at least once a year. You will know why the first time you see the one in there.

There are YouTube videos for many of these Genesis maintenance jobs. The 2009-2011 Genesis V6 are all basically the same instructions.

Could you elaborate on why changing of plugs is a dealer task? Just because of the location on the passenger side?

And trans fluid and filter? It seems pretty accessible to drop the pan out? Is there a special task or challenge that you could elaborate on?

I am just telling you what I would do. I admit that some experienced people could do it themselves without a problem. But since it is only done at 100K miles (and therefore I will probably never do it while I own the car), and there is a risk of head damage by mis-threaded plugs, seized plugs, etc, which could end up costing many thousands of dollars if botched, I would prefer to pay the piper and have the dealer do it.

Back in the old days when I frequently changed plugs on steel engine blocks, I think there was a lot less risk than with the newer aluminum engine blocks. But as I have often said on this forum, it's not the old days anymore.

The transmission fluid/ filter change can be a DIY, if you have a way to fill the sealed transmission with the car on a lift and level. There is no transmission dip stick. Also it is very important not to use aftermarket transmission filters , or aftermarket oil filters.
