  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What Driving Mode do you keep your Genny at?

I use Eco normally and switch to Sport Mode for the 45 flyovers around Austin. With regards to fuel economy, I get about 18 in Austin in mixed driving. If I'm strictly driving on the highway, and by strictly I mean no stops, I will get 24-26mpg. If however I hit even one stoplight, my mileage gets killed faster than a bi-partisan consumer protection bill.

I use ECO most all the time. Like the quicker shifts which makes for a smoother and quieter drive (IMO). Mine also remains in whichever has been selected unless you change it. Average 18-20 mpg city and 30-32 mpg highway at posted speeds. Love my Ultimate...second Genesis, fifth Hyundai.

Speed limit here is 80 - 85 mph - I live 2 miles from the fastest highway in the US.

…………… But I'm used to 130 mph or more back home, so 80 mph just feels slow. I would just have a hard time explaining that speed to the State Trooper ... I don' think "Autobahn trained" is a valid excuse for going 50 mph over the posted limit.

Well, have I got the highways for you, my friend!!!

Come on up to Ontario where our max. speed limit is 100 KM/hr (or 62 mi/hr – a real snoozefest if you ask me) and if you are found driving 50 km (31 mi) over the posted speed limit: a) you will be charged with “stunt” (I’m not making this up) driving; b) immediately, your car will be impounded for 7 days and your licence suspended also for 7 days; c) you will face a fine of up to CAN $10,000 (like $7,500 in real money) and quite possibly will be made to suffer some other life indignities.

Genesis V8 Ultimate

Normal mode 95%

Eco Mode 2% (Sacramento to Los Angeles approx. 400 miles) - Normal mode mixed driving 15 mpg vs. 21 mpg Eco mode.

Sport mode 3% - In the last year I've gotten 2 speeding tickets in this mode. 96 plus mph on 70mph freeway and 45 mph in 25mph zone. Sport mode adds lots of speed and quick acceleration, which equals FUN and tickets!!! Too dangerous for my lead foot.

Snow mode 0%

Earlier this year I had my brothers Audi RS3 up to 265 km/h in Germany, he got it chip tuned and they claim it will go 280 km/h+. Above 250 km/h stuff gets scary, even on the Autobahn. Sunday morning (= light traffic), sunny and great visibility - get's the heart pumping. And you can see the gas gauge needle move ...

100 km/h on highways in the city seems reasonable - outside where there's no traffic, there shouldn't be a limit. But even down here in the "land of the free" we're not free to go as fast as we want ...

That sounds pretty scary, but let's be honest. People drive 120-130Km/H on the 401 quite routinely (seemingly without fear of law enforcement).

You are quite correct, especially on Hwy 400 (the 401, though, is usually choked up pretty good with traffic regardless of the time of day). If the traffic is relatively heavy and everybody is doing ~ 130 km/h (81 mi/h) I will gladly keep the pace; however, in light traffic conditions I will try to keep it around 112 to 115 km/h so as not to draw too much attention (the understanding around here is that law enforcement should leave you alone if you are doing under 120 km/h).

I drive 50/50 City & Highway back and fourth to work and consistently get on average 21 mpg (calculated) with my 5.0. I use ECO mode except when I need that extra get up & go in Sport mode at red light hole shots, on an off ramps on the highway and just when I need to pass someone or get away from a crowd in a hurry. Gotta love having 420hp at your feet and 21 mpg. Hyundai did an awesome job with this motor and tranny combo for sure.

In my country the speed limit on all highways is 90mph.
there are two types of drivers here:
one part of the drivers are driving above 100mph
one part of the drivers are driving under 80mph.
In that case there is a huge mess on the highway when there is traffic. there are only two lanes. the slow lane is almost empty, the fast lane is almost full.
On the highways Im driving around 100mph, some times when it is not so heavy traffic with 110-115mph. with that speed the MPG is around 20-22
when Im driving with the speed limits or under, my MPG is always around 26-28

As I said, when Im driving in the cities mostly I use ECO mode, when driving on highways - normal/sport mode, and when driving in the mountains - sport mode is preferred.

Still disappointing mpg, since it shouldn't use much gas to go steady at 80 mph. But I'm used to 130 mph or more back home, so 80 mph just feels slow. I would just have a hard time explaining that speed to the State Trooper ... I don' think "Autobahn trained" is a valid excuse for going 50 mph over the posted limit.

When I was stationed in Germany I had a late 50's VW Bug. It would barely go 65 mph. When I would get in the passing lane to go around a big rig it would take forever. Before I knew it someone in a Mercedes would be on my ass in seconds. When I finally passed the big rig (20-30 seconds) and moved back over, the Mercedes guy would look at me and shake his head. If he was a little mad he would point his forefinger to his temple. If he was really pissed he would flip me off while his family was in his car.

My girlfriend and I went to Germany this summer. The rental car (Diesel) topped out at about 120 mph, which I was doing in the right lane when a guy (or gal, I couldn't tell) in a Porsche 911 whooshed by (I had seen him coming in the mirror). My girlfriend yelled out in surprise, and said it looked like we weren't moving when he passed. He must have been at 180 mph or so ...

Had you encountered him in your Beetle, the finger would have been the least of your problems ;) You wouldn't have even seen him in the mirror before you pulled out behind the big rig, and he would have been on your butt a second or two later ... Scary stuff ... and Beetles are collectors items now, I haven't seen one on the road in a while over there.

Autobahn is fun, but very stressful driving. I miss it sometimes, but I don't miss the gas prices over there. No-one get a Genesis that does 20 mph when a gallon of gas is 6 dollars - most of the big cars are Diesels now, and they eat the 3.8L for breakfast (some even the 5.0L V8) while getting 30 mpg+. My buddy just got a new Audi A6 3.0L Turbo Diesel - 320 HP and 480 lb-ft. at 1400 - 2800 RPM - can't wait to drive it the next time I get over there ...

Speed limit was 70 mph while growing up in the UK in the 80's. In a typical 3 lane motorway, slow cars cruise ~60, middle lane cruise ~80+ and passing lane 110+. This is where the bimmers, mercs, lambos and ferraris camp out. Drivers abide to proper rules and would not pass the slow car at 100+ mph clogging up the fastest lane by using the middle lane. They wait until the slow car doing 100 mph merge into the middle lane before bolting pass in the fast lane of course.

One late evening past midnight, driving home alone from London. A 30 miles trip i think it was the M3 (motorway 3). I maxed out on the odo of a classic Lancia Beta, which had 120 mph max. The needle pointing past that so who knows the real speed. I cruised at 120+ the entire way in the fast lane. Once in a lifetime memory...

right now in London 99% of the people are driving within the speed limits because it is completely full of speed cameras :)

Any of the switches can be automated by using a timing circuit. I automatically turn on heated or cooled seats and raise/lower the rear sunshade. I would have automated the drive mode to sport, except i hated the delayed shift. I couldn't figure out how to get sport mode without the delayed shifting.

I'm fascinated that you got that going. It should be a software fix on Hyundai's end to make all that semi-permanent (until next time button is pushed), and I'm extremely annoyed that it isn't done that way. Totally stupid, which leads to some smart person figuring out a better way - if my car wasn't a lease I'd be tempted to ask you to help me out with that ...

Mostly Normal, some Eco on the freeway when I remember to switch, as it seems to help gas mileage in stop-and-go traffic...the only kind we have here. :/ Mine is a 3.8 RWD. Love it.
