  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone, I brought a used 2011 Genesis Sedan 4.6, only one previous owner. I am approaching 80,000 miles and want to know should oil is every one else using around this mark? I'm using conventitional should I switch out to synthetic? Also, should I use 5w-20 or 5w-30?

Much appreciated for any and all feedback.

Use what the manual specs. As far as the brand, that's up to you. My 2012 3.8L GDI specs 5w-30 synthetic and I use the 6qt Havoline box from WalMart for $20.

4.6 calls for either 5w20 or 5w30 according to my 09 manual.

I normally use a high mileage full synthetic oil and Bosch filter. Frankly, I dont really care what brand as long as it meets SN and SN plus oil standards.

I prefer Mobil 1 although I like to use something that’s labeled as “for use in Diesel engines” due to the higher detergent levels. (Ideally CJ-4/CK-4 rated)

I'm currently using Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30. You should only use the OEM filters in these cars, Hyundai released a TSB a while ago for it. I personally use Mahle OX351DECO filters as they are the OEM filters without the Hyundai badge and markup.

Thanks I appreciate your thoughts and recommendations. What about oil filters? Any brand that’s as close to OEM?
I'm using a Fram CH10515 without any issues. There was a TSB that Hyundai released (I have not seen the TSB) that cautioned against using aftermarket filters that did not allow proper oil flow. I believe it was isolated to one manufacturer of low cost, off brand filters. Hyundai does not manufacture any oil filters and I'm pretty sure they use Mahle brand from the Korea plant.
