  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just took delivery of a 2021 Genesis G80 that was delivered to me long distance. What spurs the question is that there are protective plastic on the speakers, the door handles, the seatbelts, the seat backs, etc. And after a rain and trying to judge by the beading , I’m not sure the car was waxed. So , what does proper dealer prep include ?

I would not want the dealer to wax my car before I took delivery, as most would just scratch the crap out of it, as well as use an inferior product compared to what I'd use.

Plastic wrap is also easy to remove, and it'll protect items during transit. I'd not sweat that, either.

I'm guessing that he wants to know what he actually paid for. My guess is nothing, just pure dealer profit.

Your guess is wrong. There is a whole list of items covered in the "PDI" of a new vehicle. He should receive a copy of that list with the delivery of his vehicle, or he can call the dealer for a run down of said items.

Usually the plastic would be removed. For a long distance delivery I can see leaving some exterior and driver seat protection. Check the tire pressure. They are shipped at about 50 psi but should be reduced. Fluid levels checked, washer fluid added.

May have changed, but in the past waxing was not recommended on new paint. Years ago they put the hub caps on too.

I was told they also check all of the electronics on dealer prep.

That's the theory, though my last two Genesis models (well, one technically a Hyundai model) needed a new head-unit off the showroom floor. In any case, it's a necessary thing, but also not something the owner should be paying for.

Yes, it is broken out for profit. IMO, it is like a restaurant charging extra to put you food on a plate. Or buying a gallon of paint, "do you want that loose or in a can?" But some grocery stores now charge for bags.

I don't get to charge the dealer for the gas I put in the car before I buy it, so they don't get to charge me for the normal stuff they should be doing as part of their negotiated exclusive right to sell me cars that the manufacturer is not allowed to sell me.

theres a difference between a list you get and what you actually get and if those prices even line up with what they should.

hell, with mine the dealer was charging $1700 for dealer prep which was just tinting the front 2 windows, nitrogen in the tires, and they threw in dealer servicing for 3 years.... which just so happens to be what genesis gives you for free. $1700 for what would cost you less than $200 if you took it somewhere.

dealer prep has always been a way for dealers to add on some additional profit for them. nothing more, nothing less

My dealer tried to charge me $150 for "lifetime nitrogen supply."

That's a bargain. You find a tire 2# low on pressure just drive 25 miles to the dealer and they will top it up for you FREE.

Should you get a flat, have the local tire place repair it, then send the mounted tire to the dealer for a nitrogen fill-up. They will do it for FREE.

Let's not get carried away here. They probably don't cover acts of God or loss due to road hazards. I'm not sure they could afford to do so. It's not like they could just pull that stuff out of the air anytime they needed it...

You should have told him, "No thanks. I'm happy with 78 percent nitrogen in my tires; I don't need 100 percent."

Dealer Prep means the Dealer prepping YOU the buyer for getting shafted for service down the road.

After 2 months with a 2021 G80, I’m still finding plastic that should have been removed in dealer prep. I don’t ever remember that happening with any new car I ever bought. However, I think everything is different in regard to pandemic staffing and customer service everywhere.

I'd stick with the dealer though, they have metric nitrogen. Can't be sure at other places.

I'm sure it would be 90% at best.

I just checked my Genesis sales contract, and the 2019 4Runner contract, and the 2017 Chevrolet SS Sedan contract because I don't remember there ever being a charge for PDI or dealer prep. I was right, there is none. Maybe you guys are you terrible at negotiating prices of new cars. HAHAHAHHAA!
