What was the deal breaking feature in buying Genesis?

The first thing that made me think seriously about buying a Genesis was after I test drove the Equus. That car made me change my perception of Hyundai. I was amazed at the quality of that car and the value that it represented.

I tend to try to buy cars that are 'breaking out'. For example, I bought my Acura TL Type S (Blue pearl with the spoiler and body kit thank you very much!) in late 2001 when they weren't as popular as they later became. I like to think that I am willing to take the risk on the car that not everybody has. Being contrarian is part of the appeal for me.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Equus until I heard that for 2012 it was going to have an 8 speed transmission with a 5.0 engine. Later I heard about the R-Spec. That locked it in for me.

Mark my words (though I am not the first to say it), within three years from now no one will laugh at Hyundai and you will see many more of their luxury cars on the road.

Feel the exact same way. Purchased my 99 TL in July of 99. I still have it today and it will be replaced with an R-Spec sedan very shortly.

I took a lot for me to switch brands. I've been an Acura owner for 20 years this year (91 Integra GS and 99 TL) and I really tried to find an Acura that would meet my needs. But when I got to test drive the Genesis (a recommendation from another Acura owner) I fell in love. I kept asking myself how they could price something with so many features the way they do.

The Equus and Genesis R-Spec are going to have significantly different ride (suspension) characteristics, so make sure you test drive them both thoroughly. The regular 2112 Genesis will be somewhere between the two.

Value for the money spent, pure and simple. My 2011 4.6 replaced a 2003 530i for a lot less than a similiar BMW, Audi, Lexus, etc. would have cost. Five years ago I would never have considered a Hyundai product. Glad I did my research and my homework (this forum included). Now if I can just keep high school kids from backing into it....

The final answer was value/features.

Actually walked away from the first two I saw...

The first was an '09 3.8 Silver/brown (premium).
Was wrongly described as a premium plus, high mileage, was trashed inside and out. Noticed the 17" wheels, mentioned to my Wife.. and started to grill the salesman on the specs that should've been in a Premium plus package. His boss wasn't even trying to save the sale.

The second was a 09 3.8 Tech CPO - wrong color and too high mileage for the price

Still undeterred... found the first keeper (HERS)... only four blocks away from the first encounter... which was 100 miles from our house.

The second keeper (HIS) was the easiest of them all. After all the previous attempts... the sale was to terms within the shortest of them all (bought @ Fitzmall).

For me it was the Ride/Handling and Solid Build of the Car.

I'm another "other" voter: the biggie for me was rear wheel drive. As long timers on this forum know, I detest FWD. I lived in Virginia and Maryland for too many years and never had issues with my RWD Corolla... and made a few bucks (college years) pulling classmates with FWD cars out of ditches in winter. A properly balanced car - and correct tires for the season - is more important than overloading the front wheels for git-up-n-go and then having not enough grip to stop. In SoCal I don't have to worry about traction issues... so RWD's handling benefits are key to me. I LIKE power oversteer too, and fishtailing sometimes!

Also, I do most of the maintenance on my cars. Transverse mounted FWD engines are a nightmare after 50K miles or so - especially V6 or V8 engines with half the cylinders shoved against the firewall or underneath the cowling.

The Genesis sedan is one of the few cars out there worth the money. No way would I consider a BMW, Audi, Lexus, etc... no matter how nice the car is, the associated price/cost is beyond what I'd ever consider spending on a car. With the $20 to $30K I saved, I can buy a lot more stuff that'll put many more smiles on my face than a over-hyped car that a) may or may not be reliable and b) would be a higher theft/car-jacking target around here anyway. Also, I really like the styling of the Genesis sedan and the clean, horizontal orientation of the interior and exterior styling. Most cars on sale today are pretty ugly, if not downright hideous, to me - especially some of the European brands.

'Other' voter as well.
For me it was bang for the buck, build quality, style and the fact that you don't see one everyday.
Also after 20 years of Hondas, as reliable as they were, I was not going to buy another one.

I am another one of those "other" voters. I wish "overall value" was an option to select. Overall value is Hyundai's claim to fame and I feel they really hit the nail on the head with the Genesis. I've only put 800 miles on mine so far. I look foreword to driving it to work every day and I get great comments from family, friends, and coworkers. I watched/researched the Genesis since I first saw it at the Chicago auto show in 2008.

I had pretty much decided on buying the car as long as I liked the way it drove. When I drove it I was blown away. It is hands down the smoothest car I've ever driven. I may consider upgrading when they add all wheel drive depending on how this first Wisconsin winter goes. I'll be putting a set of Blizzaks on mine.

I have to concur with those that mentioned Other or just "value overall".

For me, I had an agnostic vision of Hyundai but, as I noted in another thread, really took a shine to them at the Houston Auto Show. "This is a Hyundai?"

But in my own personal decision making, it came down to interior fit and finish as a big draw, as well as having a sunroof and cooled seats. Minor deals, but the VW CC does not have a sunroof! Just a moonroof, non fully-opening.

And there's something about a solid V8 285 hp able to put down that I loved.

I voted price and exterior style but should have chose Other instead.
I was looking for the wife's car to replace her much loved Lexus GS400 (wrecked). I was leaning toward the Infinity G37 but she like the Genesis better. However the deciding factor was my kids' vote for the Genesis after seeing the power rear sunshade. I guess the Other is the power rear sunshade, haha.
Now that I have bought the car, I'm glad we did not go for the Infinity as this one is so much better than small V6 car. Also the Genesis is way less expensive than the Lexus (10 years ago!) plus so much superior in every way.

coming from a bmw that cost no less than $1800 to come out the shop with every visit. I chose hyundai cause of its 10yr 100,000 mile warranty. As simple as that.

Another vote for "overall value". All the individual features were excellent. Plus, the MB oil changes were $140 from the dealer. Yes, I'm too lazy to do that job any longer.

Having owned a 2004 Pontiac GTO for 2 years and a 2006 Pontiac GTO for the past nearly 5 years, I was pretty much done with the "muscle car" thing.

I put a lot of money into both GTOs in terms of performance mods (intake, headers, exhaust, tuning and minor appearance upgrades).

This time around, I wanted a more luxurious ride, better economy without needing premium fuel and still having enough power to enjoy the on-ramp and passing lane.

My new 2011 Genesis 4.6 offers all that and far more for the dollar.

I had been considering a 2009 BMW 550i, a 2008 BMW M5, an Audi S5 and a 2010 CTS-V. All are incredible cars. All were still priced far above the Genesis 4.6 and had miles accumulated as well.

In 3 or 4 years, I envision a new Genesis in my garage replacing this one!

Price, warranty, build quality and RWD. I know of no other manufacturer offering a vehicle with this combination.

I sold my 2004 bmw 745i which was in the shop more than it was out of the shop (under warranty but still a pain) and bought the 2009 genesis brand new. While the handling and ride don't quite match the bmw and the creature comforts aren't quite up to par with the big bmw, it's still a REALLY good car for the money. I put the logo kit on mine to hide the hyundai H logo and I couldn't be happier.

In the end for me it came down to the lexus es and the genesis. The genesis had tons more HP, had a better ride and 'looked' nice although the lexus was more prestigious. I also considered bmw (too expensive for the new 7's) and cadilac (interior was horrible with lots of plastic).

I've had my genesis for 2 years now and am pleased. I might buy an equus next year if they can fix the problems with the engine being under powered.
