  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I currently own a 09 4.6l with 100,000 Kilometers and have loved the car !
Got rear ended 2 weeks ago and insurance wants to write the car off.
repair estimate is 18K !!
Anyway because of my good experience with that car I would like to get another.
Was looking at 2012 or 2013Rspec.
Is there a better choice between the 2 cars ?
Looking at reliability, performance,handling etc.
Is there any major flaws or concerns with either of these model years ?
Are both prone to the engine oil consumption problem ? and should I be worried about it?

Thanks
R.

I bought a 2012 5.0 non-rspec a few months back assuming I would be adding 1 qt. of oil every 3K miles. But somehow mine hasn't used any for the 1K miles I've driven it so far. But getting lucky is not a good strat, so I would choose a 4.6l 2012 or 5.0 2013 or later to be safe.

I have a 13 r-spec which has been flawless.
Naturally I'd vote for either 13 or 14.

I would say 2012 through 2014 with the later years being more mature and lower miles. I have a 2013 3.8 Tech Pkg with zero issues ever.

Thanks Guys , my research seems to indicate that the later production 2012's had resolved the oil burning issue. Is that confirmed here ? Possibly different rings ?
If that's the case where in the vin is the production date indicated ?

You have to look at the vehicle assembly date on the sticker in the drivers door jamb, although some websites will show that if you input the VIN number. However, the engine was assembled before the vehicle assembly date, but I don't know if there is a way to find that out.

Personally, I would avoid 2012 completely, which had both 5.0 V8 problems and transmission problems, which were new designs for 2012. People who can't afford (or don't want to pay for) a new car, probably cannot afford to pay for a new engine or transmission if they fail.

Thanks Mark , I hear what your saying !
So were the engine and trans problems resolved in 2013 ?

It's not clear exactly when they were resolved. Probably 2013 is OK, but I can't make any guarantees.

Yes the early 5.0 GDI engine oil burn problems were mostly resolved by March 2012 build dates and after.

I bought my 4.6 because it was available and I got a dynamite deal :)

My 2012 R-spec is KMHGC4DH6CU199965 and has not had any issues at all (save for a recalled windshield wiper motor (which had not failed) and replacement of the sun roof track and a signal indicator stalk).

If you are considering a 2012 I would obtain the VIN then check with a Hyundai dealer as to what repairs have been done. If it has tens of thousands of miles on it and hasn't yet had any issues it should be safe (and more affordable). I have been very happy with mine.

Comparing the 2012 and 2013 Genesis, there were a significant number of changes throughout the car, both in the drive train and in the audio system. The 2013 and 2014 are very similar, and I wouldn't care which I bought if I needed to replace my 2014 R-Spec. I'd pick the nicest one that I could get a good deal on.

Summary of major changes by year for the 1st gen (feel free to add/modify):
2009 year one (3.8 and 4.6, 3 trims in each: base, premium, Tech)
2010 revised suspension (slightly) for less harsh ride
2011 Radar cruise control, electric parking brake
2012 Gen 1-1/2: New body kit, 5.0 GDI engine, Rspec option, better suspension, downgraded 17Lexicon radio.
2013 Blue Link. V8s only come as Rspec.
2014 New paint colors
2015 Gen 2....
