  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello fellow Genesis owners. New here. Been lurking for a while. Good stuff you guys going on here when most people have never even heard of this car.

Anyways, wifey goes to work, white smoke starts coming out of exhaust, engines starts sputtering....camr back home and at the dealer it is...any ideas?

Oil was changed last week monday at a Valvoline Quick Lube center. 8.5 quarts were used. K&N Air Filters put in last week as well...

Maybe a variable valve solenoid is on the fritz and keeping some valves open? Hope it's not a cracked block or head...

White smoke is not good.
Typically associated with a cracked or warped cylinder head, a cracked engine block, or a blown head gasket.
Not cheap fixes for any of them.

My wild guess is that Valvoline Quick Lube used an after-market oil filter that did not meet OEM specs, or was not even the correct after-market filter. When the dealer sees that the car has a non-OEM oil filter, you may be in a heap of trouble.

K&N air filter is not good either, but probably would not cause those kind of problems.

Even if they forgot to put an oil filter back in it should not smoke. And it's just a paper cartridge filter so there is no valve to get stuck...

The Gen2 5.0 is such a rare bird, nobody makes an aftermarket oil filter. That being said, I wonder if the Valvoline boys put it in right side up? Can't see the air filters causing any issue even though they are K&N.

Dont know what they put but, would it take over a week of daily driving for it to start to smoke? Also, what's wrong w the K&N filters? I've used these in my cars since I can remember without ever having an issue.

If they put the right one in, and right side up, you are correct.

K&N air filters do not meet factory specs. If they did, then they would not yield any difference in performance. I don't know if there are actually any specific problems that a K&N filter might cause, but it will cause the Hyundai Service Advisor to blow his head clean off if he finds out you have a K&N air filter while you brought your car in for warranty service on the engine.

From what I can see browsing the internet, there are aftermarket filters for the Gen 2 5.0. Whether they are just rebranded filters from Mahle (who makes the OEM one for Hyundai), I don't know. Some of the pics I have seen of these filters are scary, because they don't look anything like the OEM filters (although that "may" be just a problem with the pic).

Yes, generally the exhaust smells of atomized coolant and has a steamy quality. The engine is almost always a write-off.

Sometimes that can be a head gasket problem, and not necessarily a crack in the block (although that certainly can occur). Many years ago when I was in college, I drove a car that had a leaky head gasket that allowed coolant in the combustion chamber and eventually out the exhaust. But I kept driving it until I graduated college and got a job, and could afford to buy a new car.

But I remember that when I was shopping for a used car in college, I test drove a Toyota Corolla (probably a 1967 model or so), that appeared to be very clean and in very good shape. The owner was in the passenger seat during the test drive. When I finished the test drive (at night) I opened the hood and carefully looked around the engine compartment with a flashlight. I then noticed steam and a hissing sound coming from the engine block, and told the owner he had a cracked block (which I am pretty sure he knew). I dodged a bullet with than one.

Yes, from experience the smell. My dad bought a lemon 1970 Dodge with 318 cid engine that did a steam tractor emulation at a traffic light, we limped into the dealership. Both heads were warped and the engine had to be replaced. Like you, I was limping a 1984 Cutlass with a 350 cid. Unlike you, I rolled snake eyes and blew the number 4 cylinder when the coolant cooled down the hot spark plug really fast. The electrode broke off and melted a hole in the piston. The engine was gone.

A little more info please....... How many miles on the car ?? ....What part of the USA do you live in ?? Did you buy it new or used ?? ..... Did engine warming light come on ??

27xxx miles. Miami fl. Had about 5k miles when i got it.

Service told me today they ordered an injector but the mech was gone so not sure why...

They had the cars for 2 days without knowing what was wrong w it...seems like they still dont

A stuck or leaking injector could cause the symptoms, especially if there was a strong gas smell out the exhaust. Not many injectors have gone bad on Hyundai GDI engines but it does happen.

Possibly un-burnt gas if injectors are defective

Well after the weekend came and went we finally got the car back. Horrible furl smell. Inside and out. Next day, rough start again. Took it to a different dealer where they told us that it might have been fueled too much? And there seems to be some sort of "catch can" somewhere that had that excess fuel and thats why it smelled? Wth?

So they wanted a tech to take the car home overnight and see if there are more symptoms. Like the rough start.....which seems to be only in yhe morning....no idea whats going on....

Now the other dealer is actually saying the car is not safe to drive because of what the other dealer did. There were screws not fully bolt on, plastics broken....bottom line they deemed the car unsafe to drive so now the tech cant even take the car home...
