  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Why does first gear seem so weird??

6spd ZF

I think it feels like it's slipping because the computer is holding back putting all of the available power to the ground. Think about it, when the clutch on a manual is slipping the power isn't being transmitting uniformly to the ground. That's what's going on here, except we have an algorithm artificially preventing the power from getting the ground.

Why in the world would the computer "hold it back?" I am talking about leaving my driveway and maybe 10% throttle. The computer should only hold it back if I am sticking my foot to the floor "aka traction control aka Granny control aka big brother." This has nothing to do with wide open throttle. This has to do with very very easy starts when the rpm comes up higher than it should, the car barely moving then it shifting to 2nd and taking off like it should. It really feels like too loose of a converter. Being this is a computer controlled converter and tranny I just don't know much about them. I have had many hi stall convertors in my hi horsepower hot rods over the year and it feel exactly like that. Of course being a 14' its an 8 speed. I will take it to the dealer but my experience with dealers is if its noting major mechanically I will get the old "I don't feel anything wrong." I can live with it but it does not feel normal to me. The more I think about it I think its worse when its cold, wonder if its low on fluid?

The throttle is electronic though too remember. It's not pulling on a cable linearly like an older vehicle. If the computer can retard throttle response, it will increase fuel economy. With my SprintBooster installed the partial throttle delay is gone - completely.

If I could just drive another one that would tell me. Maybe I should go test drive another one

Yeah, that's probably best. I've driven a lot of Hyundais and can tell you that the Genesis's throttle is comparatively very sluggish and the car definitely feels restrained from a dead stop whether going full or part throttle. That is why I bought the SB. It was really annoying having to mash the pedal so far just to get respectable off the line acceleration. Again, I'm not talking about WOT here either.

what does the sprint booster do exactly

Tech Tidbit: The 8-speed transmission that Hyundai developed in-house carries 130 patented technologies, including direct-control solenoid valves. These yield smoother shifts with a 40 percent reduction in pressure variations compared with previous hydraulic control systems, and they replace the functions formerly served by various body control valves. The transmission can skip shifts as the electronics deem necessary, has an enhanced torque converter lock-up strategy and employs Shiftronic to let the driver shift manually. And each car in the line has its own specially tweaked transmission, with gear ratios tailored to each engine's power delivery characteristics.

If Hyundai wanted to... imagine the R-spec with a 2800 stall converter and an aggressive shifting transmission and tuned engine. It would be clearing the quarter mid-12's stock.

05King - I read this and it seems many people in here are talking about hard throttle. And even then, I don't get what they are focused on as it takes a lot in these cars to break loose.

Anyway - You situation as you've described is a very light throttle and sense of slipping transmission. I would say it seems to be normal in these cars. Almost like a high stall speed on a converter. The Genesis (like most modern cars) has a full control converter which will lockup even in first gear for efficiency. Because new converters can lock up, even in first, it allows for them to have higher stall speeds when unlocked. This feels like slipping sometimes depending upon the operation. As I said, I can feel it in mine on a small grade. But most of the time you don't notice this because your normal start from a signal light is likely more aggressive and that causes a lock up earlier. But if you use a very light throttle, you will feel it and that is the converter spinning in an unlocked condition to allow for the start. This is normal.

If you drive another car you will likely sense the same thing. I believe from your background with high power classic cars, you understand the converter situation. These also might be more noticeable because the cars have so many gears and the ability to lock and unlock the converter in any of the respective gears. They also have skip shift technology and you might actually be starting in 2nd and the computer is allowing the converter to remain unlocked a little longer.

what does the sprint booster do exactly

It's a simple throttle signal booster. It makes throttle response linear instead of the weird curve Hyundai originally programmed.

Pressing the throttle 10% gives me a 10% increase in power, relatively speaking. Stock programming is something like press throttle 10% and you get 2% power, 20% throttle equal 8%, etc. The sprint booster makes the engine significantly more responsive at partial throttle application.

It's adjustable too. I use it in "sport" mode, but it has an intermediate setting that is not as sensitive as sport but much better than stock.

I have noticed the car accelerates faster when you start rolling anywhere from 0-50km/h (0-30mph) in 2nd gear and floor it (Push the kickdown button) so that it shifts down to first, the car flies!

Where did you get it and how much was it?

You can buy them online (just search for Sprint Booster and get one designed for the Hyundai Genesis OEM plugs) but the price will make your eyes water given what it does.

Have not noticed the hesitation you are talking about from a dead stop but do experience the "lag" when putting the hammer down while already moving at a constant speed. Remember reading on here somewhere that it has to do with the drive by wire gas pedal and transmission settings.

Fast... thanks for that info that explains alot

SO our new 2014 R-spec when you first take off it just feels weird. The only way I can describe it is it feels like you are slipping the clutch on a manual trans. I am just talking about regular driving and not sticking your foot into it.
I imagine this is normal and maybe something to do with a lazy convertor but thought I would ask???

Same thing in my 2013 V6. Lazy off the line. I had a 2004 trailblazer that GM in all their wisdom did this to. The Trailblazer was "drive by wire" so no real throttle cable was hooked to the pedal mechanically. When floored from a stop the computer in the Trailblazer would only let around 70% of the power go to the rear wheels (or 4 wheels if in 4wd) then it seemed like after it was rolling and in 2nd gear it would really start to pick up. It's just a way manufacturers try and save drivetrains.

I also have a 2003 Yukon and although that thing is so slow overall that some days it can't get out of it's own way. From a stand still at least ALL the power and torque of the V-8 is there. Barely touching the pedal will push you back in your seat. Stomping it down will just about snap your neck for the first 2 or 3 seconds of acceleration. Reminds me of my friends old 95 Z28. Kind of tame by todays standards but so torquey off the line, just raw unapologetic power.

I WISH the Genesis was a little more like that. But snooty luxury buyers would not approve.

So after more seat time in the car I figured out what it is. The car will start in 3rd gear from a dead stop sometimes. That is what I am feeling. When it has the sensation of a slipping convertor I slide the shifter over in the gate to the manual position so I can see what gear its in and it is always 3rd. Now it will start in first sometimes if I am on a hill or harder on the throttle but it seems to start in 3rd a lot!!!! At least I know whats going on now!

I cant compare my 8 speed to your 6 speed. I would have to get other guys with 8 speed rspecs to chim in to see if this is consistent to what they are experiencing! From what I read each car has a different trans tune to it and even the R-spec has a different "trans tune" than a non R-spec 5.0. I would like to hear from others to see if this is normal.
