  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Why no more spare tire

Guessing this has more to do with the eco nonsense and it being cheaper for the auto co's then anything else.

Much if it makes zero sense, for example my Durango SRT with 8500 lb towing capacity came with run-flats. Don't think I'd want to be towing anything with a deflated run-flat !! At least the Pirelli run-flats had decent enough road manners & performance in a day-2-day driving.

My wife's Infiniti Q50 RedSport 400 was a complete travesty - whomever picked out the tires for that car and anybody involved in signing off should be banned from working in the auto industry for life !! They were staggered Dunlop tires and were absolutely a HUGE pile of :poop: :poop: :poop: at everything - they road like rocks, had tepid dry performance, dangerous wet behavior and wore out quickly (in retrospect their only redeeming characteristic). They are the only tire company that makes run-flats in the sizes needed, but I had zero intention of ever buying them again. Put on a set of Conti Extreme Summers when the time came (a HUGE improvement in ride, handling, wet & dry performance), they cost less than 1/2 the crappy Dumlops + tossed a tire repair kit & inflator in the trunk & poneyed for road service thru our Ins. co for $20/yr.

I'd have gladly paid extra & given up the truck space if getting a spare & jack + some performance rubber if it had been offered !

Very pleased the GV70 came with a spare & tools !

But with no spare you gas mileage goes up by .00000001 mpg!
Last time I needed a spare was over 10 years ago and was glad to have it in the rain when tire stores were closed.

And that gas savings at least doubles if you don't bread clip the auto start/stop button !!

If you mean having a full size spare in order to replace a bad tire/wheel by oneself, I can testify that removing and replacing a full size wheel is more of an issue than others might think at my 70+ year age. An awkward lift onto the posts from a kneeling or sitting position without using legs for power is a strenuous and potentially damaging exercise.
Yes, I could call for service and wait for an unknown time in a certainly inconvenient if not dangerous location.
Last flat was about three years ago and I made it to my home garage before it deflated entirely. A drywall screw was the culprit. I was glad to have ANY spare. The original was re-installed by the tire shop after repair. Thank you.

My daughters 2020 Kia Optima doesn't have spare, just the spray goo and an air pump.

The other day after moving to Dallas right after college, she called in tears at 8pm at night that her tire blew and she luckily made it to a parking lot. Of course it was then that we realized there was no spare so we had to alert AAA that we needed a flatbed and the care had to be towed to a local tire shop. Was a real pain in the ass.

Even with the run-flats you're going to have to get a flatbed if you have a blowout or tread split etc.!

If we had a spare in her Optima, she could have had tires switch out and on her way home in under and hour most likely. Versus waiting for flatbed, then find a decent tire shop that is in range of the tow, then having to get a ride home etc. So I much prefer having even that donut spare tire vs. none.

Imagine how much worse if it were 11pm Saturday or Sunday and in the middle of nowhere...
I've swapped our small spares for full size tires. One day, I won't be able to change a tire, but so far I still can and will.
