If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello All,

Just purchased my Genesis this past weekend - Platinum (silver)/Black/Tech. I live in Orlando, FL and would like to get the windows tinted ASAP.

Anyone have any suggestions as to products, how dark to go without looking cheesy, etc. or any application gotcha's to watch out for, as far as the rear sunshade, etc?

I have my "wings" and hub covers on order... photos to follow!

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Llumar, Sungard and 3M Automotive Films are all good quality stuff.

The platinum car would probably look best with a Charcoal Metallic Black or Regular Black/Darker color.

There's a rather thorough forum elsewhere on this site about tint. I'd recommend the read...I did and learned a lot! I used a Llumar product called "Axcess"--non-metallic filter (it's ceramic) (as suggested in the owner's manual) at 35% (legal limit in my state--East Tennessee...where there's a LOT of sunlight). My Gen is Cabernet Red Pearl, and if I do say so myself, looks absolutely STUNNING w/the tint! The guys that did it for me locally have done the last three cars I've owned, so there was no question who would get the job. They did an incredible job! I also had the sunroof tinted...really helps keep the inside temp down, and causes the A/C to not work as hard, saving gas...(the compressor doesn't kick in as often).

This is my 3rd month of Gen ownership....and I can honestly say I'm very happy with my purchase!

BTW, it's a V6, Premium Plus pkg.

Enjoy yours as well...

What does the tint job cost on a Genesis, if you don't mind me asking .. . . .

Seems to vary widely. In Florida, my guy did what he called "Max Legal" which was 20%. [Lower the number, darker the window]
Complete job with LLumar was $119.95, took about 90 minutes, and was computer cut for a very precise fit. Works great!!

I used 3m film at 30% on the front windows and 35% on the back - ended up looking very classy. Pics are on my profile. Paid $160 for all 5 windows and it took a few hours.

Tint jobs in my area (East Tennessee) vary by the quality of the company (like most things) and the quality of the tint product used. The guys I've used have an entry-level product that on a Gen would cost $125 or so. The mid-grade product (metal-based film) would go for about $225, and the Axcess (ceramic-based film) about $325, which is what mine cost. They gave a lifetime warranty, and the cost is consistent with the last three cars of mine that they've done. Keep in mind the owner's manual only recommends the ceramic (non-metallic) film due to issues with reception of the various radio signals (the antenna are in the windows).

This price includes the sunroof as well. It accounts for about $25 of the cost, if I remember correctly.

Anyone recommend a tinting specialist in the west burbs of Chicagoland?

I read a posting that talked about a drivers door short in the electrical system caused from the water draining from the newly installed window tinting. Has anyone had any problem with the rear sun shade motor or wiring after tinting being installed?

I have a sterling blue cashmere Genesis and would like to know of a good tinting place in orlando, fl. I was thinking of a cermamic tint so that the car is not too hot after parking all day in the sun. Whats a good brand of tint to use and is ceramic worth the extra cost...
what can we expect to pay for llumar ceramic tint

I have the same color combination and went with Formula One Pinncale (ceramic) 50%. I looked at the 35%, it was to dark for my taste. Though I would have gotten a little bit more heat reduction (about7%) i like the look of the 50 better. Mine was $315 out the door with a lifetime warranty from Formula One

Any concerns about the darkness with both the tint and rear shade? I suppose it would look strange to tint the rear and back windows differently. It already stinks that it's not legal to tint the front side windows at all.

I'm just trying to cut down on the heat...trying to figure out how much reduction I'll realistically get vs. factory glass.

Wanted to get the tint right as the last car was a mess. If you search for tint places in LA you get a dizzying return of places that look like autobody shops, stereo equipment shops and car washes all claiming to do your tint right , even giving you a lifetime warranty. Problem is that if the car wash goes out of business so does that warranty. Find a pro-tint shop where all they do is tint, that is where you want to go. I called the autofilm manufacturers and they recommended some reputable dealers. Call Madico or Llumar and they will point you to the right place. Want to learn more about the auto film business try this link and get educated, only if you care about the appearance of your car of course. Shade is about personal taste.

To cut down on the heat a metallic film or even a step more efficient is a ceramic film would do the job well.

On a 90 degree day your interior temp can reach 150 degrees and dash temp can reach 185 degrees:eek:

A good film will reduce this around 20 degrees or a bit more.

FYI, a ceramic film @ 70% VLT can reduce as much heat as a standard film that is 35% VLT. Of course the darker the better to reduce heat, but it's not always possible with the states tint laws to go super dark.

blah, blah, blah

I once had an akward moment just to see what it was like.

I have Pinnacle 50% on mine and don't think the shade and the tint look akward at all. Living in Atlanta the 50% does a nice job, for me. I felt the 35 was too dark.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I know that tinting is about preference, but I think I'd rather trust you fellow owners than either my blind guess or that of the tint shop.

I'm thinking probably 50% VLT ceramic film at this point.
