Window tinting advice?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I know that tinting is about preference, but I think I'd rather trust you fellow owners than either my blind guess or that of the tint shop.

I'm thinking probably 50% VLT ceramic film at this point.
50 is pretty light. The tint shop owner said the most common set up is, 20% on the 3 back windows and 35% on the two fronts to give the illusion that the fronts aren't tinted. We are also in SoCal which is typically very sunny, so someone in say Minnesota may have much less need for this. The thing I have found with high quality ceramic, is that the tint looks different (darker) on the outside than it does on the inside, which is awesome in terms of visibility.

I also have Formula One Pinnacle 50. If you think it is too light, go with a 35 (if legal in your state). You can get sample film at a tint shop before deciding. Ultimately you have decide if privacy is the paramount reason for the tint job, or whether you just want heat/UV protection.

Of the years I have been tinting windows, I have only tinted about 4 cars with 50%. When the customers came to pick up their vehicle, they asked why I had not started tinting their car yet and why I called them to pick their car up.

50% is hardly noticable in many light conditions depending on film, and they didn't even know their car was tinted.

With that said, even though I warned them how light 50% is, they wanted to be legal in MN. I've tinted the same customers a couple of years later on different cars, and they did 35% and were very happy.

Thought you might like to know others experiences. Of course this doesn't mean that 50% wouldn't satisfy you, I've just never met someone with legal tint in MN because it looks like clear glass.

In my experience, 35% seems to be the happy medium for most people. If it would help you out, I could email you pictures of cars I have tinted and you could decide for yourself what looks right percentage wise.:)

Hello All,

Just purchased my Genesis this past weekend - Platinum (silver)/Black/Tech. I live in Orlando, FL and would like to get the windows tinted ASAP.

Anyone have any suggestions as to products, how dark to go without looking cheesy, etc. or any application gotcha's to watch out for, as far as the rear sunshade, etc?

I have my "wings" and hub covers on order... photos to follow!

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Chris,
I also have the silver color and really like it,got mine in January and have 3800 miles,I already have my wings and hub covers installed and really like the new look. People are now really confused with no obvious hyundai logo anywhere. My ride came with window tinting ,I just wish it was a little darker.....but it must be as dark as Arizona law allows. The back sun screen is not one of my fav items on the car and will never be useful 2me cause I will never be riding in the back seat but Im guessing some ppl will use and like......LOL.

Totally agree with scottdk. 50% is too light. 20% is too dark and 35% suits most people just right. I have ceramic 35% all the way around on mine and it looks uniform. I was thinking about 20% for the back window, but I just pull up the rear sunshade if the sun is really blaring . 20% is fine during the day, but at night really starts to affect your outward vision, especially if you live someplace semi rural.

My other car I just tinted a metallic film and it's considered 19%. Looks awesome. It's not a flashy car, so I won't be bothered by law enforcement. Hell, I've tinted many officers personal cars and they get........35%:D

They also state they don't care about tint and wouldn't even ticket someone for it since theirs is not legal in MN either.

Have you had any issue using metallic film on glass where the antenna is embedded into the rear glass (genesis sedan) or the XM satellite radio? This is why I went with the ceramic tint, instead of metallic.

The only car that had a problem was a 2008-2009 Altima. TPM light stays on.

I informed the owner of the risks prior to tinting and he said he didn't care if it stayed on.

See, this is the reason I asked for advice. My only recent experience with tint was my wife's MR2 Spyder, which we changed from 20% because you could barely see a damn thing at night (plus the risk of a tint ticket). I kept on seeing pedestrians where there were none.

I'm not adverse to 35%, just concerned whether it would affect visibility out the rear with 35% + the shade. I'm not really keen on having to manually operate the sunshade or have it be useless.

I'd love to be able to tint all of the side windows, but I work in an area where the local PD makes it a sport to give out tint tickets. A co-worker of mine claimed that his light tint was actually factory...the cop jammed his ballpoint pen to snag the film and gave him the ticket.

Definitely ceramic tint, since I don't want to screw up reception and the heat reduction is a must.

I've had 5% before and loved it, but don't want that kind of attention. Harder to see out at night too. I have no problem with 20% viewing outside night or day in my other car and the 35% on my Genesis even with the shade extended at night makes no difference at all. That's why the shade is legal. It's easy to see both in and out of. Keep in mind that smaller the windows on a vehicle the tint will appear much darker than if the windows were large.

Musher51 has the same tint as I do (Formula One Pinnacle 50) and he posted pics of his car on this forum (see member list). I am very happy with my Pinnacle 50 ceramic tint job. I agree that not many people get a 50, and my installer had to special order the film after trying to talk me into a 35. Pinnacle 50 is going to look a little darker than a smoke 50 because it reflects more light.

I just had my red 4.6 tinted in Austin Tx. I went with the LLumar FormulaOne ceramic from Sunblasters, 35% all round. The quoted price was $399 but I had two cars done at the same time so the price was $349 each. Pricy, but it looks great and they did an exceptional job. I checked the web for comments about Sunblasters and on a 1-5 rating system, everyone rated them 5 except for one 4.

I recommend getting comments from as many people as possible because I got a really bad tint job several years ago on a Mercedes. I had to have it redone after only 2 years.

Huper Optik

I used this on my 4.6 Tech. I have been very happy with the installation and with the results (AC doesn't work as hard and car cools much faster than it did in the past)

Here is a video of the heat test:

Only thing I regret is that they did not put the coating on the moonroof which will help with reducing the heat in the car - I plan to take it back and have that done too.

Cost was $472 completed in about 2 hours. This is the same tint you get on the S 500 if you order the tint option from the factory.

They measured with a meter to determine the overall tint including factory and I ended up with 50 in front and 40 in the rear.

Just got a quote for Huper Optik from "CT Window Film and Tinting" after posting a query through Huper's website. It filtered down from the mothership to the regional distributor to these guys.

$375 for the Genesis, I don't know if it's for five windows or Five plus the sunroof. I'm actually not even sure if I want to do the sunroof. I don't know how much tinting they do but if they're recommended by Huper is it safe to assume (rut row) they're competent?

As to the film, the Huper website show Huper Ceramic being available in 30, 40, 50, etc. I'd plan on going with 40 (42% transmittance) on the side windows, with the 3-4% for the glass I'm guessing that brings me to about 38%, above CT's limit of 35%. On the rear window I'd probably do 40 as well, but I might look at 30.

They are in Danbury CT. Anyone use them for tinting?

$375 for the Genesis

That's too much. Ask scottdk or send him a personal message. I'm thinking 200-250 tops with a lifetime warranty. Haggle, trust me they need the work.

No way you can get Hyper Optik for that price unless you personally know the installer. Not all film is the same, and Huper Optik film is very expensive. I was quoted $400 for Huper Optik and many people have paid a lot more than that. But the best time to deal on tinting is in the winter.

I ended up with another fairly expensive ceramic film, Formula One Pinnacle for $350. Probably would have cost more if done in the summer time. The installers were top notch, having won quite a few tinting competitions (trophy's and photo's in their waiting room). The more expensive films are often only installed by the better (and more expensive) installers.
