Window Trim Discoloration

I have a 2022 GV70 and a few months ago I noticed a discoloration on the metallic trim around the windows. To me it was more of a patina that would come off when I used my fingernails on it. The dealer service rep said it was a discoloration of the trim that could be removed with a chemical and rubbing. This process took most of the day. The cleaning did some good but some discoloration remains. And the service tech did a messy job which I had to re-clean.

Has anyone else had this problem??

I think the trim is defective and shouldn't discolor or form a patina in a little more than a year.

I have seen a few post about this issue for sometime so it is likely there is an actual issue with some vehicles and those windows trims.
As for mine it's been fine but I've started seeing posts I make it a habit to check occasionally.

Definitely a know issue. I started seeing it on my 3.5 Sport Prestige and I mentioned it at my last service. They immediately ordered a new set with no questions and said "I'm surprised they haven't issued a recall notice on this." Apparently, they've done quite a few replacements. My concern is that they are just going to replace it with the same product, which will discolor in time as well.

And this replacement is quite expensive. Definitely do it while under warranty.

You'll never see a recall on window trim as it is not a safety concern. But you might see a TSB (technical service bulletin) or never see anything from Genesis addressing the "issue".

Genesis doesn’t consider that to be a replaceable item under the warranty. They’d sent out a service bulletin to the all or some of the service departments directing them to inform customers to instead purchase some rubbing compound by 3M and use that as directed. I’ve used it and it works perfectly. It’s a tad bit time consuming, but worth it compared to the stains and tarnished look. The product is 3M 36060 Perfect It Ex Rubbing compound."

Dark Chrome Trim Fading and Staining

I'm in the UK and have a GV70 Sport, delivered new in March'22. All of the dark Chrome trims on the doors of my GV70 have faded and are showing stain like marks, which looks terrible. The car is only hand washed using Meguiars Gold Class Car Wash so the staining is not from car wash...

Thanks for your replies. I have to deal with Auto Nation here in SC. So far it has been an up hill battle to get their Service to consider this and other problems factory defects which they need to replace. Lucky in VA that they replaced the trim! Unlucky in FL, that you have to pay for compounding and do it yourself! The reality is the car is worth a lot less with the ugly looking trim.

Half the problem: Unfortunately, I should have taken before and after pictures to document this history. The window trim on the driver's side of my 2022 3.5 Sport Plus was very oxidized, while the passenger side remained bright. I had some metal polish on hand ('Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish'), applied it with a toothbrush, and subsequently removed it with a cotton rag. This agent, used with this technique, worked great. Now, both sides appear as they should. It does raise the question as to why one side needed restoration while the other didn't require any attention.

I just noticed this issue on my 23 Sport Prestige. It is only on the trim around the driver's window. The rear left window trim is pristine as is the trim on the right side.
What is even more interesting is that my previous vehicle (2020 Jaguar F-Pace) had a similar issue with the piano black glossy support for the left side window and to a lesser degree the driver's door trim. Weird that the left side is affected.
I have my first schedules maintenance in a couple of weeks and I'll bring it up to the SA at that time.

Does your left side receive a regular dousing from a sprinkler or something like that. My tech said it had to do with residual water stains.

Update: AutoNation service decided to replace the bad window trim. Smile. But they replaced it with defective trim! Frown. Speaks volumes about the quality of service here.

Where are you in South Carolina (I assume that’s what SC stands for in this case)? Have you considered going to Genesis of Greer instead of going through AutoNation?

i too noticed a gradual but progressive discoloration of the window trim on my 2022 GV70 Sport Advanced model. First noticed it about 6-8 months after purchase. It does look like discoloration like something caused the chrome to fade unevenly or caused it to discolor. I am taking my vehicle in for 2 other issues along with the seat belt tensioner recall. I personally wish they would change the previous silver or chrome to a gloss black or black chrome trim, maybe like the front grille. Hopefully they do something because this really diminishes the look and the value.

I haven't had any issues - I'm wondering if that's due to the ceramic coating? Anyone else having the problem that has the ceramic coating?

I am inclined to think that it is just a case of bad trim. In my case, after 1 year of ownership, only the driver's window has oxidized trim all around. The other 3 windows trim looks like the day I picked up the GV70. I'll see what Genesis SA says in 4 days.

Just took my car into the dealership, they are aware of the issue and have a bulletin out as mentioned above. They are going to try and correct it, but if not, they will order a replacement set.

I got it despite gtechniq 9h coating. 3M rubbing compound works to remove stains but is time consuming

When you say time consuming, what do you mean exactly? Takes a day, takes an hour, have to use an orbital polisher? I am not inclined to do this type of maintenance if this is consistent with poor quality control or defective product. I go in next week and see what my dealer has to say.

Any update from your dealer? I have the same issue and want to know if others are getting it corrected under warranty.

I had my 2023 GV70 Sport Prestige in yesterday for the complimentary maintenance. The SA was very puzzled that only the driver's window trim and belt molding was affected. This is their comment on the ticket:

PER TSB USE APPROPRIATE 3M CLEANER TO REMOVE SPOTTING
REMOVE SPOTS FROM WINDOW TRIM AND BELT MLDG
THERE ARE NO OTHER SPOTS ON OTHER TRIM PIECES WHICH IS CURIOUS
IF RETURNS WE WILL REPLACE THIS DOOR TRIM AND BELT MLDG AS A
GESTURE FOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION DUE TO IT IS NOT HAPPENING ON ANY
OTHER DOORS

The trim piece and belt molding looked like new afterwards.
