  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Window Trim Discoloration

Hmm. You would think for a 55k car, Genesis would look at the molding issue. There is a service bulletin where Genesis will either buff the trim or if that doesn’t work, replace the trim. Update on my end, the buffing removed the blemishes but did remove much of the shadow effect on the trim. Against the other parts on the car that have the shadow trim (handles, side slit, grille), the window trim is nearly pure chrome in comparison. Nobody would notice, but I do. Cheap plastic and poor finish. Car and Driver reviewed the gv70 last month and had a pullout blurb on the issue. Dealership told them it comes from the car wash. I have a 2004 Acura that survived PA winters and the chrome is still like new so Genesis’ issue and solve is a real let down.
Question? Has this been resolved for you? I picked up my gently used GV70 last September and I seriously feel like every day it just keeps on getting worse. I don’t take it through an automatic. Very cautious about anything I put on it…. And now it seems like from every source I have checked many believe it could be from the protective film placed before transport??

Regardless, I will be going next week to discuss with the service department and was curious if it is a systemwide service bulletin.

I have a 2022 GV70 and a few months ago I noticed a discoloration on the metallic trim around the windows. To me it was more of a patina that would come off when I used my fingernails on it. The dealer service rep said it was a discoloration of the trim that could be removed with a chemical and rubbing. This process took most of the day. The cleaning did some good but some discoloration remains. And the service tech did a messy job which I had to re-clean.

Has anyone else had this problem??

I think the trim is defective and shouldn't discolor or form a patina in a little more than a year.
Mine looks great. For what it’s worth, never been through a car wash and only washed with a foam cannon using Chemical Guys soap.

I believe that all those comments about car washes, lawn sprinklers, acid rain and what have you are BS. There is something wrong with the trim.
On my driveway I have a 2022 Santa Fe Calligraphy sitting next to my 2023 GV70. Absolutely no problems with those windows trims, and yet the Santa Fe goes thru the same car wash, gets the same sprinkler water and so on.

Update… After going to the dealership, which was of course fun with the CDK outage, chatted with the service manager, and it’s definitely a known issue. There is a service bulletin out that they will try to buff out the trim and if that doesn’t work, they will replace the trim.

Trim ordered without issue for all windows Front and back driver and passenger and the rear windows.

Thankful it was a simple process with the dealership

Next up, the condensation in the driver headlight just occurred. 😩. I’ve read a lot about the screwing overtightened that retains the headlight. There’s absolutely zero damage to the headlight itself so we will see.

My GV70 is at the dealership for the trim issue right now. They've been told by their Genesis representative to buff it out. One would think that wouldn't take too long but I dropped it yesterday and was told to plan to pick it up tomorrow. At least they gave me a loaner.

Buffing is the first step and then replace if that doesn’t cure it.

FYI, Mine was so bad the service manager took a look and quickly assessed that it needed to be replaced.

Waiting on all of the trim now.

(And a headlight too. 😬😭

Hi Frank,

I have the same car and I am experiencing the same problem. In fact, when I saw your note I was researching new window trim for my car!!! Looks like oxidation of some kind to me.

All of my trim was replaced under warranty, no issues with my dealer.
same here

I still believe the adhesive in the protective film that was applied to the chrome to protect it during shipping. I do not believe it had anything to do with cash washes, soaps, or chemicals. What I would like to know was if this issue was accurately diagnosed.

I think the trim is stainless steel not chrome and what you see is a tarnish. There are many different types of stainless steels and why they picked the grade they did? don't know. i was given a tube of "Autosol" metal polish with our '24 GV70 to clean the trim when we picked the car up. I have not needed to use it yet. The process of chroming parts uses chemicals that are very polluting and are bad for your health so it is expensive or it is done in places that have no rules. So what we see as "chrome" on the outside of a car is often something else like polished aluminum, stainless steel or even a coated plastic.

An update to an earlier post: From my experience, all the reasons Genesis/Hyundai is giving for the spotting on the trim are BS. It is a problem with whatever coating was used to create the dark chrome. For me, that coating started to rub off this year when I was drying the car after hand washing it. Took it to the dealer who had their detailer buff out the discolouration. The result was the detailer removed all of the dark chrome coating so the trim around all windows and doors is now the bright chrome that is otherwise on the GV70. No discussion of having the trim replaced but something to raise with the dealer. Otherwise love the vehicle.

You’re exactly right. Our dark chrome trim is coated with something that seems to last from 1 to 3 years generally. You can do some light buffing and prolong the inevitable, but everyone’s dark chrome trim tint will shit out eventually and look like crap. All dealers are doing is buffing off the coating and saying look, it’s fixed. Some here have claimed theirs was buffed without removing the tinted coating, I’d have to see for myself. Genesis has to know whomever makes their trim has a POS coating system. Some here have used vinyl trim kits and just over coated the window trim black, that is probably what I will do eventually for doesn’t look difficult and it’s not expensive. You get the dealer to replace the trim under warranty as some have successfully done, problem will just come back. I was careful to keep my trim waxed with carnuba to help protect the finish and car is garage kept, at 3+ years the trim still started to spot and get discolored.

My 2020 Genesis GV70 had film on all the bright trim, as described. Scrape it with your fingernail stuff. The trim around the front grill is also tarnished. The dealer is replacing all the trim and inspecting the grill area today.

Where are you in South Carolina (I assume that’s what SC stands for in this case)? Have you considered going to Genesis of Greer instead of going through AutoNation?

I purchased my 2023 GV70 from Genesis of Greer. I had the trim failure on all of the trim around all 4 doors/windows. I discussed it with the Service and Sales Managers. They said Genesis acknowledged that there is an issue with the trim but are not issuing recalls or 'authorizing' replacement by the dealer. They said they were advised by Genesis that it would be remedied in future models. My problem arose shortly after the dealership was acquired by #FredAnderson, so I suspect that's why they wouldn't replace it. the trim was one of several defects with the car that #Genesis/#FredAnderson refused to fix. Now they want me to trade up to a 2026...ummm no.

That’s odd for a lot of people here have had that POS trim replaced under warranty. It’s a very well known issue that has existed for years. My 2020 G70 has it. Strange Genesis is back-peddling now. Escalate the issue direct with Genesis and tell them they can’t pick and choose how they apply the warranty on known defects or you will see them in small claims court. Genesis has had plenty of time to get the vendor who makes the trim pieces to come up with a fix.

I just bought a used '23 G70 Sport Prestige and the trim was awful as well. I went to Fred Anderson Genesis in Greer, showed it to the service manager and mentioned the TSB. He immediately ordered the parts they didn't have and replaced it a week later.

This is the one thing that Genesis dropped the ball on,....the tarnished window trim.
I wonder how hard it is to replace the window trim myself, I just order the parts that I needed? (I bet there's a YouTube video for that! lol)

I have wondered the same thing? Not sure how that trim snaps off or it un-clips? Bad thing is it’s doubtful Genesis has corrected the problem so generally folks have said it always returns so if you’re paying out of pocket on parts that will discolor again, that sucks. Take some pics if you can to show how the trim disassembles. Keep files very small or they won’t post to the forum.

I'll have to see how much parts are and how involved it is. If I can't do it, I'm pretty sure my buddy can. He's pretty smart with doing lots of different things. I'm more inclined into throwing money into my Mustang than the Genesis, but we'll see how it goes.
No worries about posting photos, there is an app to use that allows bigger files to be posted.
