Windshield Replacement

I'm guessing a rock flew up and hit my windshield (I never heard anything) I hadn't driven the car in a couple days and the car has been in the garage but today I noticed a chip right against the side moulding of the windshield about 6 inches from the top. It's already started to crack and the crack is about 8 inches and growing towards the center. I was wondering if anybody has had to replace the windshield yet in their Genesis, I'm sure it's going to be expensive because of the whole acoustic coating on it. I have insurance with a low comp deductible but I was wondering if anybody has had to replace their's yet what the availability and price might have been.

I know some of you on here work for Hyundai dealers so maybe you've had the opportunity to at least check price/availibility on the windshield for an insurance company or something, just a thought.

That's interesting, because I was wondering about glass replacement, when I got a chip etc. in the windshield.

I wonder how the company knows about the "special" glass, and if they would install the correct windshield in the car.

Fortunatly, I have glass coverage with no deductable, so the day this happens, I hope the installers know to put in the correct type of windshield.

That's my concern, I want to be sure the right glass is used. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress. BTW (scottdk) what insurance company do you have that you don't pay a deductible, I thought there was one that offered it but I couldn't think of who it was.

I also have a crack in my winshield, I got hit by a small rock on the highway and have yet to get it replaced. I am going to contact the dealership this week and I'll be sure to let you know th results.

I have my auto insurance through Western National, which is a smaller company than the big ones.

Previous to Western National I had Liberty Mutual which I was happy with, but Western National's rates were lower. Long ago I had Progressive with no glass deductable also, but their rates suck.

I didn't have a glass deductable with either company and actually never had a glass deductable, as it just seemed to be the norm according to the insurance company's.

Windshield glass replacement on an average car only costs about $250 installed by a windshield specialty company, so a deductible may not make much sense. Obviously, the Genesis is significantly more. I have had several windshields replaced with aftermarket glass (usually made by PPG) and it was just as good as OEM, but not sure if they even make that for Genesis (they may have get it from the dealer).

You might want to consider a company like Safelite because they have more windshield installation experience than your dealer.

Please excuse the dumb question, but is the "rain sensing" wipers a function of the windshield proper or of something else? If it is in the windshield, then I suspect a replacement would cost much more than the typical $250. For what it is worth, it cost over $900 to replace the windshield in my previous Audi A4; and it was just a "dumb" windshield.

I also did not know the windshield has an acoustic coating.

If you read my post above it rather clearly states that the rain sensing windshield for the Genesis is $796 plus tax installed by Safelite (Internet pricing). Don't know if that is an aftermarket part, or whether they purchase the OEM part from the dealer.

I had my windshield replaced on my 2009 Genesis after having a rock hit it while driving on a local (San Francisco Bay Area) freeway. My insurance company, GEICO, allowed me to select the place where I wanted it repaired but I chose their recommendation because of prior good service from this company for glass work done on my previous vehicle.

They ordered a new windshield from Hyundai and the actual cost was about $800. GEICO covered it under my glass coverage for a $50 deductible. The company where I had it repaired (SAFECO) did the job in less than two hours and gave me great advice on care during the first few days after replacement. I have not had any problems since the replacement (about two months ago). Rain sensing is still intact and the silence/acoustic quality of the vehicle has not been altered at all.

What does the "Rain Sensing" Windshield have that the non rain sensing windshield does not have?

I thought that the sensing thing is behind the windshield, between the windshield and the mirror.

This is just a guess... The difference may be the design of the embedded dot-matrix. On windshields that have the sensing feature, it accommodates the sensor with a different design to the right of the RVM. Not sure why it would cost that much more though.
