If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all,

I have never tried winter tires on my 2010 genesis 4.6. This year I am planning to try winter tires. Thinking of going with Blizzak. My question is about minus sizing. Tire rack recommends minus sizing with 225 55 17. Is that the only size available? I read somewhere on the forum about 215 65 17. There is a significant cost difference depending on the size. Curious to know what others have used.

Also, regarding choice of winter tires. I'm planning to go with Blizzak ws70 if available for my size (there is a close out sale on tirerack) if not will choose ws80 or Xice3.

Thanks for reading and replying :)

With the 215 65 17, your total wheel/tire diameter will be about 1.25" larger than 225 55 17. Plus, the tire will be noticeably narrower, and look kind of weird IMO.

If your stuck wheels are 225/55/17 then you could go with 215/60 (speedo error ~-1.52%) or 215/55 (speedo error ~1.65%)
215/65 would be incorrect size with the speedo error of ~4.5% - which may affect traction control sensor/system.

btw.
I'd go with Blizzak - I've had them on my bimmer and that car was unstoppable in the snow!

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I was misinformed.. The guy who wrote 215/65 later corrected to 215/60/17. This is still around 35$ cheaper than ws80 225/55/17

I have the same question for my '13 V6 Tech.

Currently has the stock 235/50/18. I thought read somewhere that the '13s have the bigger front calipers and 17 inch rims won't fit on it. Any know if that's the case?

I'd love to get 17 steel wheels with blizzaks for the winter. Much cheaper than 18s.

The Genesis Base Trim V6 has 17" wheels for 2009-2013, so if you use the correct rims, they should fit (such as OEM 17" rims). But I don't know if all steel rims would fit. You can purchase the OEM 17" wheels used from online junkyards and sometimes eBay, which would look better than steel wheels and save the cost of hubcaps. The V8's have larger front calipers to account for the extra 200 lbs that the engine weighs over the V6.

You can google "tire calculator" to compare the size of various wheel and tire combinations. Overall diameter of the tire is the key measurement to ensure compatibility.

Personally, I would go with 225/55/17. If you can't afford extra $35 per tire, then I wonder why you are driving a Genesis.

Anyone know ever buy winters mounted to steel wheels from TireRack? I noticed that they don't have steels in 17" or 18". I'm considering buying snows mounts on wheels.

I'll be downsizing to 18" for my 13 Rspec. Looking at Blizzaks. First time in years that I am buying winter tires as I have been driving AWD for the past many years. Up here in one of the snowiest and coldest capital cities in the world, my Genny could sure use a quad set of winter rubber.

To answer my own question, it looks like 1010tires.com has steel wheels and tire packages.

I did it using the X-Ice 3 and am very happy. Wheels can get tricky, however.

So my current tires are 235/50-18.

For minus sizing Tire rack recommends: 17" Recommended: 225/55-17.

Is it safe to try this? My dealer can't say that for sure he wants me to bring it in and check!

update:

discussed with tire rack customer representative. What ever Tirerack recommends is guaranteed for fit.

Regarding 215/60, he said most tires have a lower load rating which makes it unsuitable.

Great to know. In doing further research (and finding another thread on here), it's unlikely that any steel wheel is going to fit a Genesis with 18"+ standard rims. Perhaps that's why TireRack doesn't offer a steel wheel. I also bet that 1010tires.com does not have a thorough compatibility matrix like TireRack does, now knowing that TireRack "guarantees" fitment based on car/model.

Cheapest 17" alloy wheel is $109. I'll probably end up just going with those....

All your questions can be answered by a real person at Tire Rack. They are very customer oriented and honest. Will tell you best buys , technical info you asked and give you information on install in your area , if you need it. Ive had the Blizzak, very good snow tire, but they make some noise and wear quickly--- just take them off in march. I bought used stock wheels and put the snows on them. Thanks. Bigblock

Oh, very nice comment. None of your business why someone wants to save money, and you should keep those comments to yourself.
