This may be a dumb question but how do you extend and replace the windshield wipers?

When I was washing my car, I tried to extend the wipers away from the windshield but found they they can only be raised a couple of inches away from the glass before they hit the metal of the hood. With my other cars, they extend out to a holding point where it is easy to clean the window or replace the wiper blades. I didn't see it in the manual (or maybe I just missed it). Any help?

There is a service position for the wipers. Manual page 7/26.

You turn the ignition off, push the wiper bar up, and hold it until the arm reaches the service position. From there you can proceed as normal.

I've had the dealer tell me that wiper blades (may or may not include the arms) are a special-order item (due in part to the "newness" of the Genesis) that will cost over $60 for the set! Even the service tech suggested I should consider going somewhere else to replace them!

So, can anyone suggest an aftermarket supplier for wiper blades/arms for our beloved Genesis?

I appreciate any or all who may reply!

1 question - I've never seen wipers with the funny release catch these have - can they be adapted to take random aftermarket blades? I' like to try Rain-X or the Bosch blades I've heard a lot about.

Note that it's $29.95 per wiper. Full set is basically $60, same as the dealer quoted. Pretty steep for what seems like poor quality wipers as my OEM wipers are already performing poorly in only a couple of months of pretty light use.

It looks like Rock Auto has third-pary OEM design replacement blades from Trico for a much more reasonable price. You could get a whole set for <$30 shipped. Here's the link. Might be a good alternative.

I did have recent open heart surgery (with a "private" surgeon), so, if you stretch it a bit, that might be the case! No? Oh, well....can't blame me for trying!

Same question I was thinking. Although I did just hear Consumer Reports says that wipers don't last very long. Depends of course on useage and the different extremes the wipers are subject to.

Well, mine are streaking enough to be annoying, and pretty much haven't been great from day one. I think they didn't survive the South Carolina sun very well back in July and August (I purchased the vehicle in August, but it had been on the lot since July).

When comparing the streaking on my windshield to that on my wife's minivan, which has wipers that are probably almost two years old, my visibility is much worse. I'm hoping a set of good quality third party wipers might be better.

Not to state the obvious, but they are showing signs of wear...streaking, not removing the water from the windshield. I purchased my Gen in early August, and I know it was on the lot for at least a couple of weeks before I bought it. I know this because I looked at it several times (while the dealership was closed) during this time. If I get 6 months of usage in Knoxville, TN where I live (where there has been heavy rains over the last month or so, and very hot and dry prior to that), that's pretty good as far as I'm concerned. With previous cars I've owned, I've tried a number of different brands of wiper blades--I don't think that any of the better names are significantly better than the competitor--they are all about the same, but they are in many cases substantially different in price.

As for the comment elsewhere about the clip that connects them, apparently it is something fairly new--there are a few other cars that have them, but the tech writer suggested that Rain-X has a similar product. Looking around at various aftermarket suppliers yielded the following info: Auto Zone--doesn't have anything, Advance Auto--they carry a couple of options, O'Reilly--they don't have anything, NAPA--they have them--have to order.

Guess I'll be hitting up the Advance Auto Parts nearby! I'll go there and have 'my personal detail guy' install them, too! (Just kidding)!

From my work parking lot I noticed the wiper arms for the Genesis are near identical to those for the BMW 5 series. I was not aware of the need to manually move them up the windshield to a service position to tilt them up, does a BMW 5 series require this also?

I may be recalling this incorrectly, Matt, but I don't think the Bimmers work the same way. If memory serves, BMW arms could be pivoted 90 degrees from a resting position.

Trico is a well known manufacturer of wiper blades. The produce different quality lines of blades.

The wipers on the Genesis are different sizes for the drivers and passenger side (24" vs 20"). So you need two different wipers. The Google site is listing two "normal" blades, one of each length, and the two "winter" blades, one of each length. That's four blades.

I'm not really sure what the fifth blade that's listed is, but it looks like an exact OEM replacement for the drivers side blade.

You can also go to the Trico Products or Rock Auto website and just search for your model. That might be more clear.

However I have another question. After I read these posts last night, I read the manual on extending the wipers to the "service position". It seemed very unclear. The first step said " remove key from the ignition".

First of all the key is never in the ignition - its in my pocket. So that prompts several questions
1) Can the key be in your pocket to perform this action? Should it be well away from the car?

2) Does the car need to be in ACC mode?

Bottom line - I could not induce the wipers to move to said "service position". Could someone help me out with what I am missing? BTW I held the wiper stork in the MIST position for at least 1 minute with ACC on with everything off etc.

Am I missing something very obvious here?

I am assuming this is useful not only for changing the wiper blades, but also for handwashing the car.

Car needs to be turned off, hold the lever to the mist position for a few seconds and the wipers will go up to the service position.
