  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey All,

I've noticed (or, rather, people on the phone have noticed) that when I'm on a call, the other party frequently tells me the that they are hearing their voice echoed when they talk. This only seems to happen when my iPhone is plugged into USB and the call is through CarPlay. When I unplug the phone and call via Bluetooth, this doesn't seem to happen.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I haven't heard anyone complaining when I call using CarPlay. I will try to see if there is a difference.

Usually this happens when the volume is too high in the car. I have not heard any complaints, but I will say that carplay mode calls are better quality. I can hear a constant background static noise when on bluetooth calls in non- Carplay mode.

in my experience, with Bluetooth the other party says I sound like I'm "under water" with Carplay the call is crisp and clear.

Literally everyone I speak with on the phone for more than a few minutes starts hearing themselves. Hmm...I just had the head unit replaced...

I have no issues and I use CarPlay every day. It could be your microphone and not necessarily the headunit.

It's likely the phone. I had this problem with my older iPhone 6+ and a new XS Max seems to have solved the echo issue. I think it may have to do with the older phone's inability to deal with feedback while running CarPlay at the same time.

It's not the phone. I had the same problem with the iPhone 7+ and my Max. I'll be taking into the shop next week.

It seems you have already narrowed it down to a carplay problem since it works fine with Bluetooth.

I think Snork is probably right. If it was a CarPlay issue, lots of other people would have the same issue. I'll be taking it in to the shop at some point...

I for one will be impressed if they can diagnose a car problem using CarPlay when it works fine with Bluetooth. That would be an excellent service department. I’m pulling for you.

At least it’s a repeatable issue...

Lots of complaints out there about CarPlay and echoing issues. I still have the problem, the service department is pretty helpless and think I'm some kind of blank check.

That's good to know. I guess? Where have you seen these complaints? You're the first person to post here who has heard of this issue.

Turn off the equalizer on the phone. Don't use any sound enhancements. It also allows the volume to work as normal on any Genesis.

I wasn't using the equalizer or sound enhancements. At least, I don't think so. Where do I see those on an iPhone?

In the iPhone 7 plus and beyond; Tap on setting, under music, you will see, EQ, Volume Limit, Sound check (EQ) turn it off along with Volume Limit and Sound Check. It's set to on by default.
