  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Please help me understand this. In my 2018 G80 Sport, a wireless charger is located directly next to a USB hub and audio jack. This USB hub is the only port that connects your iPhone for CarPlay.

Why isn’t wireless CarPlay an option? What good is a wireless charger if your phone is plugged in for CarPlay and charges simultaneously? You can’t close the sliding compartment if the USB cable is outside the dedicated area, you must leave it inside we’re it lays against the wireless charger with 3 feet of wire stuffed next to it. WTF

Talk to Apple. Until OS9 wireless was not available. It is just starting to be implemented in cars. The 2018 electronics design probably had to be finalized just about the same time it became available from Apple.

I do hope it’s only a software update. Would be a shame if it’s not. Could be worse, 2017 G80 Ultimate models cant even get CarPlay

Since the car has WiFi, Bluetooth, and CarPlay, it might be possible to upgrade to wireless CarPlay via a software update if Genesis decides to do so, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Would be great, though.

I totally agree. Having to plug up my phone each time i want to use android auto is a pain. I hope the 2019 has the android auto in a wireless version. if so, I am trading my 2018 G80 for it.

Since the wireless charger is a decent spot to keep the phone, I bought a 4" lightning cable on amazon for $5.99 and its a perfect fit for my 8+. I haven't tried Android Auto with my Note 8 yet, but I'm sure I'll do the same with a small usb-c cable.

I've been doing my research on the G80 as a potential purchase, and actually called Genesis support for this. The rep seemed a bit out of his depth and cautious, but did say that there will be no firmware/software updates to the 2018 models, just updates to the maps and nav only.

I'd be disappointed as hell if I pick up a G80 and would need to upgrade the entire car for wireless carplay.

Do you honestly trust what engineering and product development is being done according to some support guy on the phone?

That said, the 2015/16 Ultimate cannot be upgraded to Car Play or Android Auto for technical reasons. Since both companies are still in development of the Bluetooth version I don't think even Genesis and their electronics supplier can give a definitive answer just yet. It may or may not be possible even in the 2019 model. It is certainly a crap shoot, especialy after reading this:

No, which is why I said he seemed out of his depth and cautious. But it's also what Genesis said, and in line with the current way most automakers view their infotainment systems as unupgradable. It's apparently not easy to get an actual Hyundai engineer on the phone...

If they explicitly say it in writing there is a good chance (but not 100%) that it will be true sometime. Otherwise don’t count on it happening. Not everything is upgradable and you cannot rely on what most carmakers do.

most car manufacturers do not make the equipment upgradable because if they did then customers would not have anything to entice them to purchase a new vehicle.

and technically in most cases the equipment can actually be upgraded for many things, but the manufacturers do not dedicate teams to doing so for the above reason, they focus their R&D on new products, not existing products. The only time ECU flashes are released is to address an issue, not add new features.

From what I can figure, the wireless charger only benefits your passengers. Not for the primary driver who would always take advantage of CarPlay. Right?

correct.

Ho boy, I sure hope this happens. I just got my '18 G80 Sport and I'm loving it. One of my favorite features (along with all the luxury/comfort) is the extra functionality and convenience of CarPlay.

Right now, the user experience is somewhat lacking, particularly given where technology is these days (and with WiFi being available in-car, so I hear). The user must manually plug-in, plop the phone down somewhere, wait for the system to finish booting up, and even then, you still have to hit "Ok" on the legal nag screen (which is also annoying, honestly).

I liked in my last car ('13 Audi RS5), all I had to do was place my phone onto a magnet and get going. There was no nag screen, but there also wasn't any CarPlay. I look at this as a software issue and I'd happily plug away at this myself if only it were open source and not proprietary (on both ends) 😢 I can't wait for the magic of being able to get in my car, wait a second or two and suddenly CarPlay comes up with no nag screen (and still have the integration with the rest of the car and it's native media system).

there will always be a nag screen, but most cars, including the G80 will go to the map screen after a set time out.

I've never confirmed the nag screen in my G80 Sport, and I don't deal with plugging in and plopping the phone I have a dock, I get in slide the phone into the dock, start the car, put in reverse and by the time I am out of my driveway the system is booted up and on the carplay screen. No human interaction required, except to pick my playlist if I don't want to listen to what is already playing.

wireless is garbage, the bandwidth is too low and the music sounds like ass, I will take a wired connection over wireless any day of the week.

You know, I did notice that once but I wasn't sure if it was a fluke. I've had my car for about 1 week now, so I'll have to just be patient and see. I'm too used to tending to everything, I should just learn to enjoy and appreciate the automation and luxury that the car provides 🙂

That's hilarious (and true). Speaking of, I came from Bang & Olufsen in the Audi and Lexicon has given them quite the run for their money. I'm the kind of techie to try and find a way to hack a wireless form of CarPlay into my car (I'm a programmer for a living), but I'm lazy enough to just "deal" with plugging in indefinitely, too. Hmm... 🤔

IMO invest in a proclip mount and be done with it.

this is a generic picture. but you get the idea. I'll snap a picture of mine in a bit, need to borrow the wife's phone to take a picture of my phone in the dock.

Kinda of a crappy picture because it’s night. But you get the idea. click thumbnail to enlarge image

phone slides in and you go less than 2 seconds to deal with plugging it in. once it is attached even if the car is off, it connects to carplay, so once you start the car, the nag times out after 30ish seconds, and it flips to carplay.

if you put the car in reverse the camera will activate during the bootup and you won't ever notice the lag from the boot cycle.

Shut up and take my money.

Seriously though -- that sort of quality mount with lightening cable already integrated is exactly what I'm looking for. Alright, so from what I can tell this is what you've got in your photo:
  1. Holder: Adjustable iPhone X Holder for Lightning to USB Cable (iPhone X in my case)
  2. Mount: ProClip Console Mount
Is that about right? Pricey, but I'm picky so that would work perfectly for me. Questions: Does the mount leave any evidence of its existence at all if you were to uninstall it? e.g. is there any visible wear/damage on the leather/plastic anywhere? Also -- does it intrude on the passengers space at all? It doesn't seem to but just wanted to confirm what your experience has been.
