  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Wireless CarPlay?!?!?!

I did buy this and installed it in my G80. It is pretty handy but it does get in the way if you have a large size cup in the larger cup holder. You do have to use the original Apple lighting cable. An off brand won’t fit. They are all too big to snap into the slot made for it.

Bell in cables work, that is what I am using, Same size as OEM, bought it at Best Buy and brought my OEM with me to be sure I got one the same size.

Yes it interferes with large (32oz) big gulp type cups,, You can resolve that by getting one of these on Amazon and using it in the small holder:

I bought it, don’t really use it, Only thing usually in my cup holder is my coffee tumbler and it isn’t an issue. but I keep in the console in case someone is with me and decides they need a super big butt size drink.

I purchased both the Proclip holder and mount, I didn't have an OEM lightening cable so bought two of them too. I can't for the life of me get the cable into the holder, it physically won't fit. Please see the pictures below.

Note that I tried to put the cable into the top end of the hole where the lightening end of cable should be sticking out and it won't fit. This leads me to believe my lightening cable is too big. I figure if it has to come out the hole from below, it should somewhat go the opposite direction too.

Also note that it appears the lightening connection is cocked as it is going through the hole, that doesn't' seem right.

Any ideas? How can I check to make sure I really got an OEM lightening cable, I bought it off ebay?
I appreciate your assistance.
Here is the cable and holder I bought:

This is the furthest I can get the cable into the holder:

Here the lightening end cocked coming through the holder:

These are showing the cable won't come close to going in backwards, or down the holder vice up the holder, to show it won't fit at all in the direction where as I feel it should:

Update:
Problem resolved. The cable I bought was not OEM. Several co-workers had different OEM variations too, 1 was too small, 1 was just right. I went to Best Buy and was able to find an OEM cable and it works as advertised. The item from Best Buy was in an identical box to the one I bought off Ebay, I will have to give the Ebay seller some feedback!

In case you missed it, this explains the cost for BMW and perhaps coming to others. Gist of story, keeping up with technology is expensive.

We Found Out Why BMW Charges $80 a Year for Apple CarPlay

Sorry I’m not buying their argument. “You don't have to like it, and you especially don't have to like BMW's current approach, but it's not free.” I agree that nothing is free, but this is just a way to monetize something that should not take that much cost to support and should have been (and probably was) already baked in.

have to agree, it is a lame argument that is hiding the truth.

the truth is that there is no more customer loyalty, manufacturers, regardless of the product don't produce something with the mindset of keeping the customer, all customers are disposable.

Since they can't rely on a customer coming back over and over to re-lease or re-purchase from their brand, subscription services have made their ugly appearance. The idea to hook the customer on a monthly or yearly fee based plan to keep the profits flowing.

look at all the things that have turned into a subscription service:

  1. remote start and gps location for vehicle (bluelink or similar for other makes)
  2. Why buy a new iPhone or Android for a $1200 one time purchase when you can "lease" one from any of the major cell services for $40-$60 a month and rotate into a new one every year as long as you remain on a subscription
  3. Microsoft O365, why buy MS office or Windows when you can pay a monthly fee for it forever
  4. streaming video services, monthly subscription vs. just renting a video online for a one time viewing.
  5. There are even Hotel subscriptions, pay a monthly fee on a 3,5,7 year contract and never worry about paying a hotel fee if/when you travel

Revenue Generation, multiple streams of continuous income for the company that relies on the majority of the subscribers seldom or never using the services. That is the reason and the truth as to why there is a charge.

Just like the remote start features on the Genesis (and most other brands now) they know if you want it bad enough you will pay for it.

Please help me understand this. In my 2018 G80 Sport, a wireless charger is located directly next to a USB hub and audio jack. This USB hub is the only port that connects your iPhone for CarPlay.

Why isn’t wireless CarPlay an option? What good is a wireless charger if your phone is plugged in for CarPlay and charges simultaneously? You can’t close the sliding compartment if the USB cable is outside the dedicated area, you must leave it inside we’re it lays against the wireless charger with 3 feet of wire stuffed next to it. WTF
Audi's have had that for a while.
