If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Would you buy a 12'r-spec that had a new short block installed

SO this gets interesting. I posted something being excited about picking up my Genesis tomorrow. Some replied back about the oil consumption problem. After reading here about the oil consumption problems in the early 12' 5.0 r-spec I pulled a carfax and it showed the car was purchased early in 12'(so build in 11'.) I also noticed some back to back to back dealer visit's. In a round about way found out this car has had a short block assembly installed 10k miles ago. I really love this car but don't want to get myself into a problem child. The short block was replaced at 29k car now has 39k. SO QUESTION especially for those with there motor replaced. DID that fix the problem? Should I even consider this one or just move on??????

Is the car "used", or a "CPO"?? If it's a CPO, the engine will be covered until 2022, or 100,000 miles (whatever comes first)
If it's "used" the engine will be covered until 2017 or 60,000 miles.

If the price reflects the engine being a new short block I wouldn't hesitate. Maybe try and work an extended warranty out of them.

Its used and has 39k on it now

The car is not at the dealers its at CarMax. This could be a good thing (being the problem is fixed and the motor only has 10k on it) OR this did not fix the problem and the original owner said screw it and traded it in. I am curious if the guys with motors replaced if that fixed there oil consumption probelm

If the issue was for oil consumption I wouldn't worry and you should be able to haggle a lower price since engine replacement is a black mark. The trouble is that you have no way of knowing precisely why the engine was replaced. The reason this is important is that in a case where the engine grenades itself (rods, pistons, bearings, other internals, etc) most dealers will only replace the short block while reusing the oil pan, heads and auxiliary components. If this particular engine failure resulted in metal particles traveling throughout the oil system and making their way into the reused components, there is a chance they will make their way to the new short block and result in another grenaded engine. There was a well known thread on a WRX forum where an owner went through 3 short block replacements with the dealer before realizing what was going on and most dealers are lazy so don't expect them to thoroughly clean reused components.

This will be a gamble. On one hand there are well known oil consumption issues with the early 5.0's so its highly likely this was the reason for replacement. On the other and, you can't know with absolute certainty.

I think I am going to pull the plug on this deal and look for a 13'

I would not hesitate to buy it. The short block. 99.9% was changed due to the oil burn issue. That was due to low friction rings which Hyundai had trouble with at the beginning. Since you have a new short block, the engine is essentially new and it is from the later builds of 13/14 without the issue. Go for it.

With only 20,000 miles left on the warranty, on that car, I'd look for a CPO at a Hyundai dealer. CPO's are usually marked up $800 - $1000 over non-CPO's. ...Usually well worth it. (If you plan to keep it a while)
You may want to consider an extended warranty if you are looking at a fully loaded car. Items like Navigation and the top of the line radio are only covered for 3 years on a CPO, and can cost thousands to replace.

It worries me if someone was running it so low on oil and only the short block was replaced I would imaging the top end (cam, cam bearings, etc) may have been starving for oil...

Yea, if all is well now, you have a car with a half a new engine. Not a bad deal. Good points above ^^

Be aware that a CPO vehicle is not especially different from any other used car except most have relatively low mileage and are "clean". The dealer buys a special insurance policy (passed along to the buyer along with a substantial markup) to insure the car against mechanical failures.

Back on the "should I buy" topic.....I would not personally deal with CarMax. Heard way too many bad stories about them.

If you really want a Genny, decide which model then contact leasing companies in your area to see what is coming off lease. Be sure to insist on verifiable maintenance records. I've known several people who did leases and never changed the oil.

I disagree. I would not recommend getting anything coming off lease. I used to manage a auto leasing business. I can tell you 90% of lease returns were not taken care of properly. And many manufacturer warranties will not fully cover lease return cars. As well many lease returns are only elegable for very limited extended warranties. And you can only claim if you have all maintenance records from the original lease holder.
Major headache.
Buy one that somebody owned. They will have taken better care of it.
And don't let the new short block scare you, all the big work has already been done. Just get the best extended warranty you can for it.

I heard that if motor comes in with 2 quarts low or more, and oil test shows consumption, new motor. Short block for those who catch it early and see consumption that does not put level 2 quarts or more. Good point though.

Suppose to pick up a late 13' with 13k miles on it this weekend if its still available for 31k

If not, no worries on a 2012... Even if "short block"
