Loud timing chain huh.....as far as I have known timing gears are the loud ones and chains are quiet. Chains are not as precise and prone to stretching out and getting out of "time" Where as gears are noisy, but give you better performance as they don't stretch out over time due to heat and stress. If a timing chain makes that type of slapping noise then it is too loose on the sprockets, and that slapping sound is the chain hitting the housing that is covering it.
Either way it is not an acceptable noise from an gas engine at idle. No matter what the dealer says; if it is acceptable to him ask him to show you another slightly used $44,000.00 luxury sedan that makes the same noise? I bet you'll get the "Its Howdy Doody Time" look (for those of you who do not know Howdy Doody put your arms out to your sides slightly bent and then bounce like a puppet) Now picture your dealer giving you the same look when asked the above question.
Am I missing something here and or being unreasonable?
No, you're not being unreasonable at all. This topic reminds me of my dads 2002 Outback. Good God, if you heard this engine you'd think it's up near 2,000,000 miles, but it runs like a champ and always has. His engine has been super noisy near the beginning and not it's almost at 170,000 miles.
