Knocking/clicking noise from engine

Loud timing chain huh.....as far as I have known timing gears are the loud ones and chains are quiet. Chains are not as precise and prone to stretching out and getting out of "time" Where as gears are noisy, but give you better performance as they don't stretch out over time due to heat and stress. If a timing chain makes that type of slapping noise then it is too loose on the sprockets, and that slapping sound is the chain hitting the housing that is covering it.

Either way it is not an acceptable noise from an gas engine at idle. No matter what the dealer says; if it is acceptable to him ask him to show you another slightly used $44,000.00 luxury sedan that makes the same noise? I bet you'll get the "Its Howdy Doody Time" look (for those of you who do not know Howdy Doody put your arms out to your sides slightly bent and then bounce like a puppet) Now picture your dealer giving you the same look when asked the above question.

Am I missing something here and or being unreasonable?

No, you're not being unreasonable at all. This topic reminds me of my dads 2002 Outback. Good God, if you heard this engine you'd think it's up near 2,000,000 miles, but it runs like a champ and always has. His engine has been super noisy near the beginning and not it's almost at 170,000 miles.

Got my car back from the dealer. The replaced my ABS Assembly from another problem in another Post. But I had them check again for the noise BUT THEY KEEP SAYING THEY DON'T HEAR ANYTHING!!! Are you kidding me? hahaha My car runs like a champ still. Going with premium gas now and just used the Chevron Fuel system cleaner. I'm going to use it one more time on my next fill up. The knocking is still there but getting quieter? But it freaking runs stronger than before I got it back from the dealer. I made a engine view video with the knocking noise and I am going to show it to the dealer before my warranty runs out. I'm at 59100 now. I might go to another dealer just to see what they say. I don’t know if I should use the seafoam.

I had a similar noise from my 2010 v6 a few months ago at around 27,000 miles. The noise was particularly noticeable at lower speeds (below 30). Dealer diagnostics and their consultation with Hyundai indicated "an issue with cylinder 2"; they replaced the entire engine and sent my noisy engine to Korea for teardown and study. Took them about a month diagnose the problen, import a new engine and install it and for that time they provided a nice Santa Fe as a loaner. I am very satisfied with the repair result (smooth quiet engine). I think finding a good dealership service shop is the key -- you may want to try a different dealership (that has mechanics with better hearing).

WTF was that about? How did you lose so much oil? How long (and and how many miles) before it was last changed when you noticed the problem?

I haveno idea. It was last changed in October and about 6,000 miles have been put on since then.

I have over 65000 miles on my Genesis and never used oil, had over 230,000 on my 2004 Acura and never used oil. You have a serious problem if the engine was 3.5 quarts low. Time to use the 100,000 mile warranty and get a new engine.

That's what's a little disturbing to me. Especially since my last oil change was 6000 miles ago My engine was replaced in October because of hydro locking in severe flooding. Since the new engine install I've experiences a complete loss of power to the whole car... Twice (found out the alternator went bad from the water) and a check engine light once (connector to a sensor underneath the engine came loose) not totally happy.

Took the car in yesterday to get oil change and complained about the Noise for like the 6th time. THEY FINALLY HEARD IT!... Got the call today, they can't find out what is making the noise... so they are going to put another Genesis 4.6 next to mine and see if that car make the same noise  If after it doesn't make the same noise as my car, they said they are going to call the Hyundai Genesis field specialist to come check it out. In the mean time I am driving their 2009 3.8 loaner. I'll keep you guys posted.

Field Tech came out and they said its a normal noise coming for the fuel line? They put a newer 4.6 next to mine, compared it and says it make the same noise? I haven't hear it myself but I will ask to hear it myself when I go pick up my car tomorrow. I told the guy via phone "if this was normal why didn't it make it before?" answer was its normal? hahahahaha... I will try different oil but I doubt that would help. So do I use except that the noise is normal?

Hi There,
I have the same knocking/clicking noise coming from the engine. I have v6 2012. Dealer checked and said it was normal and coming from the fuel pump which is part of the GDI technology.
Personally i am not satisfied with this response, it does not make sense to me, since Hyundai engineers, designers, research team and other quality control dudes would have rejected a noisy model. It has to be some sort of flaw which Hyundai does not want to address along with the poor AC cooling.
In addition every dealer is running his/her own show. There are no equal or unified standards set by Hyundai.
I don't know if it is possible to get an official response from Hyundai about these issues. But just imagine Hyundai announcing that it is a premium car and GDI technology making the ticking noise is absolutely normal! (will never happen).

GDI engine noise IS normal and well documented all over the internet. The threads partaining to this issue are generally for the 4.6 which is not GDI.

Hi guys, I have a 2009 4.6 59k. Approx. around 50k I started to hear a clicking/ knocking noise from the engine. Sometimes it doesnt do it but it is pretty constant, Never heard it before. Took it to dealer Multiple times and they never hear anything. And says its a characteristic of the car Is this normal?????? Anyone else have the problem? Will post video soon.

Hyundai posted a new TBS bulletin on Thursday (12-EM-006 USE OF AFTERMARKET ENGINE OIL FILTERS CAUSING ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE).

See attached.

I’ve been using Wix 57250 filters with Synthetic Oil 5W-30 oil and have not experienced any problems. Have 22917 mile on this car and can hardly hear engine when it’s at an idle.

This TSB makes absolutly no sense to me. How can an oil filter change the pressure so drastically as to starve the engine for oil? Its the oil pump's job to produce the proper psi through the oil pick up tube to lubricate the engine. That sound in the video is reminicent of valve tapping or spun bearings. Either of which are fatal symptoms of oil starvation. Ofcourse, if the oil hasnt been changed and its sludged up, the filter (any filter) can contribute to the pressure loss, but that is the least of the problem. This, in my opinion, is a copout excuse from hyundai and its quite dissapointing.

Btw, forgive my spelling/grammar errors. Just woke up and typed this on my phone.

I've got 75k on my 2009 4.6

I have this noise usually in the winter. It doesn't last long once the engine is warmed up. I use 0w30 mobile 1. My engine also has a rough idle when starting up....

So after emailing Hyundai and Hyundai advised me to go to another dealer and have it checked out. The Second dealer heard the noise and recommend engine tear down for find the problem but at a 1,600$ cost then another 2k plus for fix what ever is wrong. hahaha. Talked to my old dealer and they told me to bring the car back. They tried to use an engine cleaner? Seafoam I'm guessing? but I guess that didn't work. Called them today and they are going to tear it down to find the problem under warranty..thank goodness! Hopefully they find it.

I watched your video and from what I could here it may be one or two bad lifters in the engine. Also, I don't get why the second dealer would not honor the warranty and do the tear down etc at no cost to you.

That TSB is not specific to Genesis, and there have been similar TSB's dealing with aftermarket oil filters in the past.

The Wix 57250 is identical in every way to Genesis 2009-2011 OEM filters (filter made by exact same company). But for the 2012 Genesis, Hyundai has switched filter suppliers and this may be due to GDI engines. I would not use an after-market oil fitler on a 2012+ Genesis with GDI at this point.

Dropped my car off at my dealer on Saturday. They said I should have it back by Monday (today). Dropped it off due to my driver heated/cooled seat not working anymore, and a horrible ammonia smell coming from the drivers seat when the heated seat previously worked. Also addressed the passenger seat shake/rattle. Only seems noticable on bumpy roads like Hwy 10, but not noticable on 169 by my dealer which is smooth. Rear HVAC does not blow any hot air at all, even when the temp dial is on red. Hopefully I get updated today.

Also mentioned my noisy engine again, but of course it wasn't being noisy that day. I did mention that this noise seems to be always present when it's under 50 degrees, which is wasn't when I dropped the car off, and the weather all week will be around 65 degrees, so I doubt the engine will make the noise. Once the engine makes this tapping noise when cold, the engine still makes the noise when the engine is at operating temp.

Scott,
Any updates you can share?
Thanks

Yes...sorry I forgot to update.

Passenger seat rattles once in a while, but dealer tested other Genesis sedans and they concluded that the sedans they tested also have a passenger seat shake/rattle and is "normal".

They fixed the heated/cooled seat and I guess the ammonia smell was actually the electronics in the seat starting to fail.

Rear HVAC they said is operating as normal and they used a temp sensor and reached over 80 degrees in the rear seat I guess.

The engine never did make any clicking noise while at the dealer so there was nothing they could do. The last few times I've driven the car the engine has been perfectly quiet, so I will probably have another oil analysis done to see how things are going with the engine. Last analysis (which I have a thread on) results were good at 19,000 miles. I'm at 33,700 now and I will have the analysis done in the next few days since I probably will put the Genesis away for the winter in a few weeks. Got the winter tires on my Sonata yesterday.....................

Once I receive the results of the 2nd analysis I will post them. If this info seems confusing, my apologies as I'm feeling a little loopy from this cold medication I took.
