  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2011 Equus Signature caught fire, now totaled

On the evening of March 31, 2013 after taking my grandchildren to lunch for Easter. I came home about 6:00 PM and parked my Signature in my garage. The next morning about 8:15 AM I went out to the garage (attached) and noticed a brown film on the inside of the windshield. I walked to the driver side and noticed the side windows also with brow film, I opened the driver door and was shocked to see the driver front seat had a hole burnt all the way through to the floor, the left side where the lumbar and massage switch was located was melted.
The fire was out but we called the Fort Bend Fire Department. They came out and called the Fire Marshall, he told me that the car was very air tight because the fire did not break out of the interior but burnt itself out for lack of oxygen.
Hyundai Corp. has been notified and I had the car towed to Hub Hyundai Katy Freeway. I told Hyundai I fully expect a replacement of a new Equus and the items in the car that were destroyed to be replaced and the smoke smell that was in the garage and seeped into my home to be restored to normal. I further informed them that I would not file a claim with my insurance but rather expected Hyundai to take care of the claim since the fire was a result of a serious defect in their automobile. My wife and I feel we were lucky that our home did not catch fire and that we were not injured.
I am writing this to make other Equus owners aware!

This falls under product liability if it was due to a faulty switch or wiring. If due to a spill or other foreign object found that started to fire then it is a claim on your auto insurance. I hope the fire department did a thorough inspection as to where it started. You do have a loaner from Hyundai, right? Its what you paid for with the car.

The Fire Marshall made a report that I will get a copy of. It appears that Hyundai is going to take care of everything, my Equus rep at Hub told me that Hyundai was flying in engineers and other officals to exam the car and then they were going to hire a outside agency to do a full investigation and aftereards Hyundai wants to crush the car to make sure that no part of the car makes it back into circulation.

Yes, Hyundai was MORE than happy to bring a Genesis t my home for me to use until this is resolved.

They brought you a Genesis??? Why not another Equus?

Notify the NHTSA ASAP. Definately a safety issue.

Yes, in the year and a half since I bought the car they have never provided me with a Equus. I questioned them and was told there were none available. The first loaner they tried to give me a Sonata, but that was not going to fly, they found a Genesis.

Given the small number of Equus sold at any particular dealer, I think it is unreasonable to expect that a dealer will always have an Equus loaner available for every Equus customer. The only other option would be to raise the price of the Equus about $5K.

This. My local dealer has 2 Equui on the lot. There is no way they are going to run up the miles on one as a loaner.

As a update to mu 2011 Equus Signature that caught fire. This morning a nice lady from Hyundai Corp. called me and told me to mak a list of the items that were damage in my car due to the fire and any cleaning bills I may have incurred also to let them know how much it will cost to have the smoke taken care of in my garage and home and they will take care of the bills. She also stated that Hyundai will be replacing my Equus with a new 2013 Equus Signature, I told them I wanted the same color Silver with black interior. We will see if this happens.

Don't forget to mention that big bag of hundred dollar bills that you had sitting on the front seat. Best wishes with your cleanup and replacement of damaged items.
