Complete brake failure on two occasions

2.1.13 add me to the list,

my brakes have just failed for the 1st time, lucky I was not going 75 mph on an interstate exit ramp, that would have a been a serious accident.

car is 2009 model year w/ 62,940 miles, i have had it since new

took it to the dealer, I was told the car was out of warranty (60k miles) and I was quoted @ $875 to replace the master cylinder, whoa are you kidding me?

i said we need to talk to HNA this should be covered, this is a serious problem, good news they covered it "one time good will for customer satisfaction".

this car has been great till now, i was looking forward to the new 2014 model but wtf, i doubt i will be in a new Genesis :mad:

You should go to https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ and file a report. You may end up saving someone's life.

Totally short-sighted on the dealer's part.

You should take to Hyundai USA to see if they will at least cover some of the costs; totally unacceptable for a car to have this issue.

Without doubt a M/C failure is a frightening
Experience, been there Done that!!
FYi.. Usually before the Master Cylinder gives up
there are a few clues:- darkening brake fluid
as the Seals disintergrate, sometimes brake fluid
finds it's way into the vehicle via the pedal
mechanism and drips down the pedal stem.
Your Brake fluid level drops. Easily seen.
As Hyundai stepped up to the plate and covered the

a good sign that they do Care. I would stay loyal.
Considering how many M/C are out there working
100% maybe there is/was another contributing
factor that needs investigating!

I wonder if the sensor used in adaptive cruise control is faulty...I would get rid of the car altogether, trade-in or go to another brand.

The problem does not appear to be the Master Cylinder and is not isolated to a few Genesis sedans. If you read all the posts in this forum about this problem, some people had the dealers replace the Master Cylinder and it appeared to fix the problem, but the problem is intermittent so that was a false conclusion (that Master Cylinder replacement would fix it) since eventually the problem happened again.

Those who have had the problem permanently fixed have reported that the dealer replaced the ABS Control Unit (or something like that). That is the only permanent solution that appears to work. It is not known to any of us whether the DOT-4 brake fluid upgrade is related to the function of the ABS Control Unit, but obviously Hyundai has issued a TSB for the DOT-4 brake fluid.

This problem has been reported (in this forum) on 2009 vehicles, before adaptive cruise control was available on the Genesis. See my previous post for apparent part that is failing.

You should go to https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ and file a report. You may end up saving someone's life, including your own.

^ This. I am one of those who had the ABS module replaced. See attached for how they coded it. Haven't had a problem since.

make it three, on May 20, 2013 the brakes failed again, dealer replaced the ABS module, brake fluid as a one time customer accommodation, supposedly a $2k repair job. :mad:

Why would a repair under warranty for a critical safety feature of the car (probably the MOST critical feature) be considered to be a "one time customer accommodation"? What kind of people are running Hyundai?

The brake fluid upgrade to DOT-4 is a TSB and is being done for all affected Genesis vehicles that are brought into a dealer for any service (also applied to new and used car inventory).
 
I had the same issue this morning with my 2009 3.8 Genesis, my brake pedal was very soft and went all the way to the floor. I went straight to the dealer and they replaced the brake fluid and the HECU (whatever that is). Total paid under warranty was $2200. Thank goodness the car was under warranty, if I would have had to come out of pocket for the repair I would have been very angry.

The brake fluid upgrade to DOT-4 is not a warranty claim, it is a mandatory TSB for any car in the dealer shop, regardless of warranty status. Not sure what the HECU is (sound like update to ECU firmware, which may also be a TSB).
 
Scary stuff. With the latest tech this can now go both ways. I just bought a Volvo (safest cars?) with a pedestrian avoidance system that will automatically brake if I don't see a person. In heavy rain the camera got confused and locked them up with a car on my tail, almost causing a collision. I miss the days of the good old Flintstone brakes.

This is the type of thing that scares me with all the automation now taking place in the auto industry. The "fail safe" technology is not up to the proper standard to prevent incidents like the above from happening and is the primary reason I will not go beyond what my Genny is currently capable of.

I don't use the adaptive cruise control for that reason.

I believe the marketers are several years ahead of the engineers on a lot of the high-tech "safety" equipment most people have been conditioned to want. We've had my wife's XC60 in every kind of blizzard, sheeting rain and even tiny hail without triggering the city safety system. Luck - maybe, but when I hear your story and others sometimes, it makes me think NASA scientists need to be calibrating these things. I use my adaptive cruise control often, but never in the city. The Volvo adaptive CC is somewhat more precise and less easily fooled than the Genny.

Wife had this happen to her today. She first heard a noise, that as she described it to me, was the sound of the ABS kicking in on the right front side. After that she had virtually no brakes. She called me in a panic. I went to where she was and drove it to the dealer. I used the sport shift feature to control my slow downs, but the pedal faded at every stop and required pumping to get a good brake hold. Dealer has it now, so we'll see what they say tomorrow.
