Acceleration & Engine Temp Gauge

I am a proud new owner of a used 2013 Genesis. I just have two concerns with the acceleration and the engine temp. When accelerating, it almost sounds like their is some engine knock going on. Should I be using a higher octane gas?? Or is this common?

Also the engine temp is typically in the middle ....it seems to be running warmer than what I would expect. Any thoughts?

I purchased the vehicle used from a major Buick dealer and not from a Hyundai dealer. They said that they do a complete inspection etc but the vehicle is not a certified pre-own so I have some minor concerns.

Any input would be appreciated!

Get the car into your Hyundai dealer ASAP and take advantage of your 5/60,000 warranty. In addition to evaluating those problems, have them give the car a look-over and do their 17 Point (or whatever) inspection. Your selling dealer is totally out of your life now, unless your Hyundai dealer finds something major that would cause you to question your purchase. You likely already know that, as a second owner, the Hyundai 10/100,000 powertrain warranty does not pass on to you. Enjoy your new wheels.

^ what he said. spend 100.00 to 200.00 for a thorough inspection and printed report on anything that needs attention. Have all TSB's done and recalls done by Hyundai dealer.

I would go back to the selling dealer ASAP and report and note the issues. Even though they are a Buick dealer, there likely is some sort of warranty through them for at least 30 days. In the case that the issues are related to deeper problems or those not covered for some reason by Hyundai's warranty, the reporting of them early to the selling dealer will make fixing the issue easier.

^ The point is that the Hyundai dealer is the expert, not Buick. Get to Hyundai immediately. You can always stomp on the Buick dealer before the 30 days are up IF a problem is found that calls the sale into question, or worse. Get thee to a Hyundai dealer!

The engine should not knock. If you believe it is knocking then use as much gas up as you feel comfortable and put quality high octane in it and test again.

The temp gauges are not aircraft quality so there may be a variance in how yours reads. Mine has been showing just below the halfway mark when fully warmed up since new. If you feel your engine is running hotter than it should it is an easy test to verify.

The others in this thread have given you pretty good advice. Have your car checked out by a recommended dealer or independent shop before your limited used car warranty is up.

This is good advise. Since you have the 3.8 which is designed to run on regular, I would put in half premium and half regular. 100% premium may be too much for the 3.8, especially if you live in a cold climate.

Your 3.8 Genesis is designed to run on 87 regular gas. Let the Hyundai dealer check your engine whilst burning regular gas.

Just a thought, but maybe the knocking sound is getting confused with the normal sound of a GDI engine?

What is the normal sound of the GDI engine? I think "knocking" is not the exact description of the sound but it's almost like a ticking resembling putting a card in the spokes of a bicycle. It definitely sounds different than any other car I have heard.

Yes, that is normal. Get thee to a Hyundai dealer and listen to GDI.

I second that, the ticking sound is completely normal. More noticable with the window down when you are near a wall, like at a drive thru. When you are driving you shouldn't be able to hear it. Had the same concern when I bought the car and then read up on this forum that it is normal and some manufacturers go to greater lengths to hide that noise than others.
