Please read before purchasing a genesis

As most, we make bad decisions throughout life. I have to say that the purchase of a 2013 Hyundai Genesis with the tech and premium package has been one bad decision that I wish I had read more about. I have owned several cars in my life (Jeep Cherokee, Mercury Cougar, 2 Chevy Cavilers, Chevy Impala, Dodge Ram 2500, Nissan 350Z, Chevy Tahoe, BMW X5, BMW 530i, BMW 328i, Mercedes C300, Mercedes E350, GMC Sierra 1500, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Camary x2, Hummer H2, and now the dreaded Genesis). Most cars have been purchases that I have not done research on beforehand and I was pleased with the vehicle MOST of the time. Of these I have been dissatisfied more with the Genesis than any other. Since I purchased (not even a year ago now with 12K miles) I have had the following issues with the car:

-leather on the driver's seat, and the rear seats look as if the car should have 100K miles with a family of elephants (kidding of course) riding.

-On a road trip with my kids, the rear door decided it did not want to shut at all. So I had to take the time to find the nearest dealer and drive down the interstate with one hand on the wheel and one holding the back door handle to keep the door closed. The car sat in the shop for a few days (the handle and locking mech was malfunctioning (as I was told) and the door was torn apart to replace the needed parts (not to mention that they had left over screws and a tweeter grill afterward...a whole other story).

-On another out of town trip, the GPS went black and none of the radio buttons worked. It rebooted itself only to do it again. I took it into the shop locally when I returned home and was told that the main head unit and computer had to be replaced (3 days in the shop).

-Rear seat has become detached from its base and now rattles sounding like the back glass is about to fall out (actually I thought that the glass was loose until I investigated the problem more. (still not fixed)

-The passenger rear door child safety locking switch leaks water when raining or washed. I notified the dealer who did not seemed as concerned as I. I informed them that if nothing could be done, that I wanted it documented so that when the bottom of the door began to rust out, that Hyundai would be liable...wishful thinking I'm afraid though.

Other issues that are probably common that I find a pain are these:

- The trunk is designed in such a way that if the trunk lid has any water on it, or if it is raining out, be prepared for everything in the trunk to be soaked. Total design flaw as NONE of my other cars ever had this problem.

-The car sounds like a sewing machine when idling...or just a cheap Korean car...which it is.

-Lastly, it would be hard to distinguish if this car was diesel or not just by looking at it parked. The amount of soot that coats the rear exhaust and surrounding paint is worse than that of the diesels that I have owned. This tells me that this car is not as efficient in its gas burning abilities as the sticker says.

Others have had some of the same issues as you can research them on the forum. As it stands, everyone that asks about the car (as I took the badges off and replaced with the Genesis Wings) I warn them to stay away and save for a German or even some American made car. I personally will NEVER own another Hyundai unless its a first car for one of my children...even then I would be skeptical.

Take what you will from this. Do your research..unlike me, and make an informed decision before spending your hard earned money on a subpar vehicle.

Some of your concerns about the engine noise, etc, are because of the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine technology, which is similar to that used in diesel engines. Hyundai is not the only manufacturer that has problems with their GDI engine, but the industry is rushing to do whatever they can to reduce fuel consumption.

I did the research before my purchase, initial quality beats all contenders.
Cars today are built using a " cpk " index for all their parts. Picture a bell curve with a tall center hump. Sounds to me like you got one outside the 99.8% good. This does not help you at all but for all the others , including me, who are in the 99.8 we can rest easy.

My Genesis now has the same miles (28K) as my roommates 2012 BMW 3 series and he has been in the shop wayyy more times then mine. Mostly all of mine were only for oil changes. People say the newer BMW's are much better in reliability, but sadly they still go in the shop a lot just like his 2007 3 series did.

But I do understand why you would be upset with all of the events you had to go through, I would be too.

Sounds like you got a bad one, but statistically it seems to be an outlier. I've had a couple of issues with my 2010, but my dealer is excellent and everything has been taken care of quickly and easily (including a head unit and transmission replacement). I love this car and would not hesitate to buy another one.

Funny, I did not read one serious flaw in grsams rant. Half of them are normal situations with the car such as the GRI engine sounds and the exhaust soot. The rest are easily correctable under the Hyundai warranty. Some people drive themselves nutty. This poster is one of those types.

I have almost 117,000 miles on my 2011 4.6 v8 with tech pkg. No problems, all systems continue to work flawlessly. Rick Case Hyundai in Duluth is excellent, always gives a rental when the car is in for its routine service. Just had replace a lower ball joint on my Mercedes among other items. My Hyundai Genesis is way more reliable than Mercedes or BMW IMO.

I guess I am one of the few that expect quality (hopefully not though). Good thing I don't apply the same principles to my job as Hyundai applies to automotive production or else people would die. Sounds and soot I can obviously live with, but when the car has been in the shop as many times in the first 10K miles is (to me) not normal. I am guessing this is normal for some as this poster names such as "normal situations" however I am not one of them.

Every make/model has it's lemons. I'm sure you can find cases on every make/model forum that make your gripes/issues you have had with your Genesis.

I have also owned a BMW 335i, Lexus IS350, Accord V6 and many others and I have to say the Genesis is very luxurious when comparing them all. The only thing the IS and 335i get the nod on is off the line acceleration. I much prefer the interior of the Genesis over the interiors of the other vehicles I have owned.

All of this is covered under warranty but it does sound like you have a lemon and I'd be somewhat upset if my new car was in the shop that many times already in the first year of ownership. GDI engines are known for excessive soot and unfortunately a lot of oil burning it seems...but not on every vehicle which makes it a quality control issue IMO.

I now have 4k miles on my 2013 and it's been running great minus one little rattle which was fixed. I've owned more expensive cars, both BMW's and Mercedes and let me assure you they are not much better overall and by far more expensive to repair.....that being said I also didn't spend $55k+ on the Genny. It's not a perfect car but at the price I can buy one every few years and the service department at my dealership goes out of their way to make sure your taken care of (loaner car etc.).

I understand your dissatisfaction.

I owned a lemon once, it sucks but that doesn't mean all Hyundais or Gennys are s****y cars. Hell, my engine blew apart and I hope she comes back to me soon!

Let's see if I've got this right. Your problems have been:

1. A rear door that wouldn't latch.

2. The radio and NAV died.

3. Loose leather on the seats.

4. A rear seat that has come loose.

5. Soot on the exhaust.

6. A water leak.

7. A noisy engine at idle.


1. & 2. (especially 1) are real issues-------------and they were fixed on warranty.

3. Has been a chronic problem. I pointed out my front seat to the dealer on a recent service visit. They took a picture, sent it to Hyundai, and it was replaced (the bottom) on my next service visit. Actually, I could have lived with it as the seat is comfortable.

4. Just how big and rambunctious are your kids??? You probably just need to do a good job of re-latching your back seat.

5. Another chronic problem with GDI engines. I don't sweat it as the engine (5.0) runs really strong and sweet.

6. It shouldn't leak--------did the dealer fix it??

7. Is that a V6 issue---------my 5.0 idles quiet.

As for the trunk, I've found that, if there is water on it, opening it just a enough to get the water to run forward for a moment keeps most of the water out of the trunk.


My only warranty issue has been the seat cushion (and I wasn't planning on pushing it much). I've had no other real problem. Yes, I can nit-pick a few things, but I would quickly replace it with another if something happened to it.

The ride, quietness, and power are great!!!

Sounds like yours has issues. Have you ever used a leather conditioner on the seats. May have helped in aleviating the problem if done early.

But after 2 + years of owning mine, I'm happy. There is a little soot on the exhaust, but I got that on my regular gas powered cars as well. I had a radio issue that was fixed with a software upgrade.

Other than that, the car has been flawless. I'd but another one.

Sounds like you got a lemon definitely, sorry bro. Did you ask them to give you another car (worth a shot), I agree that all cars have some issues and you unfortunately got the worse of the lot. I think you should give another one a shot and see if it doesn't change your opinion, but i respect the fact if you are turned off due to the issues you've experienced.

I think I can commiserate somewhat with the OP, but for different reasons.

Yes, a lot of problems are covered under warranty, and it's a pretty good warranty at that. The big problem I have is the availability of parts for the car within the country. They're virtually nonexistent and it can takes weeks to get a part in, and if the car is torn apart then you're out of it for some time. For someone like me who leases, that's annoying.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I have had my 4.6 for four years now and the only thing that failed on it was cooled drivers seat which stopped working. I got a whole new driver's seat under warranty. I did my research before buying and do not regret my purchase in the least.
