If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just bought a used 2012 3.8 sedan base with 30k miles. The salesman told me to change the oil every 3k miles but no one really does that anymore. I believe the manual says 7500. Anyhow, what kind of engine oil should I use - synth or conventional? Is it 10w30 or 5w20?

Also, the manual says something about using a fuel additive. Does anyone use it?

I use synthetic and have for years. Dunno if it helps, but, I feel better using it. I use the 7.5K mileage OCI. The 3K OCI "may" have been appropriate with dino oil and way back in the day before engines were so much more polluting than they are today. @ 3K OCI IMO is a waste of money.

There is an additive for your fuel tank that is highly recommended in, something like Techron Plus or similar. I'm sure someone will pop in with the correct name for it.

Personally I use Marvel Mystery Oil just because I want to. :)

For a GDI engine (all Genesis starting in 2012) I would definitely use synthetic oil. Personally. I would use 5W-30 or 0W-30 (but not a European Formula 0W-30). 10W-30 is not a good choice for modern cars, unless the engine has high mileage and significant internal wear. 5W-20 or 0W-20 might get slightly better fuel economy and it helps Hyundai achieve good CAFE numbers, but is not the best for engine longevity IMO. If you want to go 7500 miles between changes, Mobil 1 5W-30 EP (Extended Protection) is a good choice, and only costs about $27 for a 5-quart jug at Walmart.

Periodic use of a fuel injector cleaner is not a bad idea. I use Chevron Fuel Injector Cleaner, which is quite inexpensive at Costco. Chevron also makes Techron, which is more concentrated version of the Fuel Injector Cleaner. See the Chevron website for more details. Hyundai Fuel Injector Cleaner at dealers in the USA is made by Chevron and rebranded with a Hyundai label.

do most of the people here do their own oil changes? i've never done my own..i guess i could buy some of those ramp things at advance auto parts and start doing it.

i'm thinking i'll go 6,000 miles. i don't drive in completely severe conditions...probably 70 city / 30 hwy in the mid-atlantic. so mobil 1 5w-30 it is! that's what i used to use on a lexus gs. this genesis is a lot better than that gs i had by the way.

I change my oil, and some others do also, but probably most don't. You might want to search the forum for instructions, as starting with the 2012 V6 you will have to remove a panel on the bottom of engine to reach the oil filter. There are threads that have pics and instructions. Obviously, there is some difference between the V6 and the V8, and also differences between the 2009-2011 V6 and the 2012+ V6.

I definitely wouldn't say 7,500 miles is suitable for most people. That's if you do basically entirely highway driving. People who tow, drive short distances (sub 12-15 miles) on a regular basis, drive in traffic, drive in city settings, or who drive hard need to change sooner. Those are that qualifications for "severe duty". 5,000 may be more appropriate for 99% of drivers.

Is that right? hm. On the Sonata i did the oil change every 7k miles or so but there were lots of highway miles built in during the road trips. i won't be doing as much hwy driving on the genesis so i'll stick to the 5k sched. the local dealer always has coupons for free oil changes but it's probably using conventional.... i guess they would charge me extra for synthetic and tire rotations.

I have the dealer change my oil every 5000 since about 70% is city driving. My dealer allows me to provide the Mobil 1 5W-30 oil and they subtract the cost of their oil from the oil change price...and I get a car wash.

I buy my own oil but got tired of busting knuckles waaay back when, so, I supply my own oil and am charged $19.95 for the dealer to change it.

They will wash it, but, I never let them. Too many horror stories about the damage done to the paint by those "auto" washes.

Oh, and I have my oil changed ~6K miles. +/-
