  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Whoa! Don't do this with your tranny!

I may have missed this in the 20 million posts for the Genesis, but I'll post this anyway.

Climbing a 5%+ grade in the mountains of Utah under cruise control at around 75, I thought I would see if I could get the my 2012 V6 to hold 8th gear by putting it into manual shift mode to reduce gear searching a bit.

Not a good choice!!!

Going just a few ticks under 70, the tranny suddenly downshifted all the way from 8th to 3rd gear!!! I quickly shoved the transmission back into auto mode and it upshifted to a more reasonable gear. I didn't not see the engine exceed redline on the tach, but it was close.

I don't expect perfect performance from the car in this rather unique situation, but this was just "a bit" unnerving and not what I would expect any auto-tranny car to do.

The tranny logic was reflashed with latest firmware just a few months ago.

Yeah, it'll do that in manual mode if you smash the gas to the ground too - 8th to 3rd instantly.

What does the new logic help with out of curiosity? I haven't had my ECU flashed since I bought the car in October 2012.

If you put it over to manual mode, it will change the shift parameters for top performance. Almost hitting redline isn't a problem at all. It won't let you downshift to a gear that would put you well past redline. There's a rev limited anyways.

Don't be alarmed, it's all normal operation.

Good to know, since I did the same damned thing. These Rocky Mountains.....

While I understand your perspective, I just don't hold that much trust in a manufacturer to understand and control every situation that its vehicle will be subjected to.

I agree that possible damage to my engine/tranny is low, as long as I can trust the tach reading and firmware logic. But I think it's worth mentioning here so others know it's an unusual occurrence that is worth thinking about if they value the long-term reliability of their car.

It's not clearly stated from what I've seen, and having lost free access to Hyundai's TSBs complicates my response. Mark may know more.

However, I suspect it is to improve "responsiveness" to "driver input". IOW, it won't take as much of a mash of the pedal to get a downshift and "move-out" to your expectation. All within reason of Hyundai's MPG desires, of course.

Personally, I haven't noticed enough of a difference (if one even exists) to justify the firmware upgrade, if that's what you're wondering.

Thanks. Yes, just wanted to know if there was a tangible difference. I won't bother scheduling a visit solely for a flash if it's not a major improvement.
