I was on the Interstate the other day. I was traveling back home with the family from a weekend trip about 120 miles from home. I had the cruise control set to 95MPH. I was ready to get home in a timely manner and this car runs 95 as smooth and under control as 55MPH.

I didn't realize it at the time but I was being chased down by a 2014 SHO Taurus. The guy in the Taurus pulls up to me doing about 100MPH and floors it past me. He got ahead about a 1/4 mile and then slowed back down to 90MPH. I caught up and passed him with my cruise control still on. He went by me again, slowed down again, and got passed again. He repeated this three times.

My first thought was "I have my son on board". No way I am going to mess around. My second thought was, "My car is amazing from 90MPH up, he wouldn't really stand a chance."

As I am sitting there, calmly laughing at the guy in my mind. I turned over and looked at my wife. She had an scowl on her face and was looking at me. My wife asked me, "What is this guy doing?". I replied, "I think he thinks he can take me 90MPH up."

She calmly looked at me and said, "And you don't think you can take him?"

My first thought was, "And that's why I love you!!".

I was doing more than the posted speed limit. I was in a hurry to get home. I wasn't driving wrecklessly just was in a hurry.

I thought it was cool that my wife didn't give me crap for driving 95...

Didn't expect what she said at all...

FLYNBLIND you are so right about how smooth Genny is at those speeds. I did about a 300 mile trip this weekend, first road trip, and I was on a toll way with the speed limit at 85. So of course I pushed it to 90 on cruise and never saw a cop until I was at the end of the toll way. Got to love Texas speed limits. My average MPG was 23.6, not bad if you ask me. Very nice car for the road, and I think I only saw one other Genesis on the highway, but tons of Hyundai cars.

Understand. Never said you were driving wrecklessly. Just your logic of not going fast because of children is a bit flawed seeing how you were already way over the speed limit.

But I will say this, the car drives and handles beautifully at 100 MPH. And it gets there so effortsley that you don't realise how fast you are going until your already there.

My wife probably would have either said the same or if she was in a mood, just a grin and go for it.

Yikes. For me, it would never come to that. With kids on board, I would never drive at that speed. If you think you're a great driver, good for you. Take it to a track where there are no other drivers, deer, or anything else that can jump out in front of the car. Many things are out of your control, and just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it never will.

If you're late, be late. Better that way then never arriving. Going 95 instead of 65 (or whatever reasonable speed for the road is) will make a 5 minute difference.

True that hitting, say, a deer at 70 and at 95 will both result in disaster, stopping (or slowing down) from 70 is much faster (shorter) than 95.

Not preaching to make you change your ways. Just my opinion.

It appears that the Taurus driver might have been drunk as well.
Taurus is a family sedan which in most cases likely driven by a more responsible adult.

A Taurus SHO is not your normal family sedan. It's a great performing car, but still no match for an R-Spec.

I don't want to get into a debate on the risk/rewards of life in general. But, I will say this and then never comment about the subject again:

My motto in life and with everything I do has been and always will be...
Live your life to the fullest. Don't take stupid chances but don't be scared to live a wonderful life and enjoy what the world has to offer!

And I do agree with your statement.

Mine has been that rather than showing up at the pearly gates all clean and in perfect condition, I'd rather come sliding in sideways all dusty, and bruised saying "what a hell of a ride".

Drive/Ride it like you stole it!

Well said, but speed in and of itself isn't remarkably dangerous. It's speed differential that poses the biggest risk no matter what you're driving, where, or when.
