If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi guys, I notice that when I have lane keep assist on, sometimes the car will steer automatically to stay in the lane without vibrating the steering wheel, and at other times, it will vibrate the steering wheel to warm me I'm drifting out the lane, but I don't feel the car try to steer.

I know if lane markers on only one side are detected, the "keep assist" feature is not activated and the system will only warn of lane departures. If both sides are detected, does the "lane keep assist" steer without vibrating the wheel?

Thanks so much.

I'm not certain I'm understanding your situation correctly, but there are 3 settings for lane keep assist. One is the vibrate, one is pre-departure, and one is post-departure. Is there any possibility the setting got swapped between the things you're describing?

Can you explain how each settings work?

Yes, it will steer without vibration. I use this feature everyday and overall it's wonderful IMO, pre-departure mode works great and reacts quickly to the lines without being overaggressive on the amount of steering input your feeling.

My experience with this feature is quite similar to calbear88. This is my take on it. With system set at pre-departure and LKA enabled if my hands are on the steering wheel and I start to drift into the lane line the steering wheel vibrates but I don’t feel any correction. If I take my hands off the wheel and let the car drift onto a line it will steer back into the center and keep doing it. In the beginning I was doubtful if it was actually working because I didn’t feel correction when my hands are on the wheel just the vibration of the wheel. I don’t know if it may be that I’m actually canceling the self steering effort when I hold the wheel. I was only able to verify it’s operation by not holding the steering wheel. I’m curious if that’s what others have experienced. Can anybody here say that they feel the steering activate while actually holding the steering wheel ?

I'm not sure if I'm correct, but here's what I think happens: With LKA activated the car will try to keep itself between the lines. If you are steering into another lane WITHOUT A TURN SIGNAL ACTIVATED (or just onto the lane lines), you'll get the haptic feedback because you're actually preventing the car's ability to do the maneuver itself. With a signal activated the car knows that your maneuver is intentional and won't try to correct. Correct me if that's wrong or if you have a better way to explain it. :)

I think I concur and I did feel the steering wheel attempt correction with my hands on the wheel recently. Noticed another situation when I go to pass someone like on a single lane road if enter back in too soon (according to on board systems) an audible alarm activates. Don’t know if it’s the blind spot monitoring system reacting or some other programmed safety feature. My wife first noticed it then I did. Has anyone else noticed it?

That would be the blind spot monitoring system for sure - it's quite conservative in the room it expects you to leave to other cars when changing lanes.

Yeah - I wish the BSM alert could be turned down just a little bit - it's pretty loud. Or at least I should say I haven't found an adjustment for it's volume.

I think I figured out how the system works.

When lane keep assist is on and set to "pre-departure" mode, the steering will correct itself if the car veers off center before crossing the lane marker and without haptic steering wheel vibration. This system is engaged only if both the right and left lane markers are detected.

The lane departure warning system will vibrate the wheel if you cross a lane maker. This system can be engaged even if lane markers are detected on only one side. Often this system is engaged while the lane keep assist is off because or poor lane markings.

Does this seem right?

yup, that correct. You can't have it both ways at the same time

I have really come to love the lane assist. (I have mine set to pre-departure). The correction is so subtle. If you are not really paying attention you don't even realize it is helping you.
