  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey guys I have read just about every post on here over the last couple weeks that applies to what we're looking at. 3 weeks ago my wife and I were looking at Kia Optimas and a genesis was parked next to it and I asked what it was. Long story short we drove it and the Optima is now a distant memory.

Using these forums we have narrowed it to a 2011 4.6 with under 40k miles. My questions are:

Certfified worth it?
Any nightmares with Hyundai honoring the warranty?
Platinum extended protection in place of certified? Thoughts/personal experience?

We are looking to stay under $25k and seems the most bang for the buck is the 2011 4.6. Anyone disagree? I know some of the threads ive read for my research were older and maybe some of your thoughts have changed. Open to being convinced to spend more if you guys feel it is justified. Thanks in advance for any and all input this forum has been great.

Certfified worth it?
Extends 10 year - 100K mile powertrain warranty to used car purchaser (normally only available to original owner). Forget about inspection, since not likely to actually be done.

Any nightmares with Hyundai honoring the warranty?
They won't fix something unless they can reproduce the problem.

Platinum extended protection in place of certified?
Audio/video/radio/GPS electronics are only warrantied for 3-years or 36K miles, so getting the extended warranty is probably a good idea due to some problems with audio systems. Good replacement for extended drivetrain warranty also (which dealer has to pay HMA for when selling a car as CPO). I would try and get the official HMA version of warranty instead of third party ones. Contact Jim Ellis Hyundai in Atlanta for a quote on the extended warranty.

+1 - I purchased the HMA Platinum warranty from Jim Ellis. After 36 months my head unit went out (a $3000+ repair). It was replaced under the warranty with no problem, so my warranty has already paid for itself.

Keep in mind that the contract for a "10/100" extended warranty on a used car will have a shorter term and lower mileage limit than on a brand new car, but the premium will not be discounted. I purchased mine when the car was one year old and my Platinum contract is for 6 years/72,000 miles instead of 10/100. This is fine with me because I only drive about 3000 miles a year.

Ya I understand that the 10/100k warranty on a certified is for the balance of the original amount. Seems though the platinum protection plan covers the same as the Hyundai 10/100k warranty with some extra protection as well. If that is the case is it better to save and get a non CPO with the plan with Jim? Is a CPO and the plan together a bit redundant and a waste? We will hit 100k well before the 10 years with the amount we drive. With the price difference between certified and not around $2k what would you guys recommend?

Also can a case be made for the extra money on the 2012 4.6? Seems that only differences just a few minor exterior features and a debatably improved suspension which i couldnt feel on my short test drive. Also the transmission difference which it seems has a mixed preference on these forums. Am I missing something?

I'll add that my 2011 4.6 only had one issue. Back up camera worked sporadically. Mine was CPO with 48k on it and no extended warranty. Service department changed it out free of charge and gave me a loaner car. They were great to deal with. I don't think you can make general comments about warranties and service. It depends on your local dealership.

I test drove a 2014 rspec that was a demo this past weekend. Yes, it was faster, but I actually liked my interior better and couldn't come close to justifying spending the extra money on a newer model even with $13k off sticker.

Thanks for the reply jutdean.

the 2011 4.6 is a great car. I have 132,000 on mine and its great. No problems. I do recall that the original driveshaft had to be replaced due to a very slight rumble during acceleration.(no cost under warranty) Had same thing happen with one of my other cars. Hyundai has a TSB on this for some of the 2009 to 2011 models.

Awesome. Closing in on a few 2011 4.6's. Haggling down and will pick something up this holiday weekend. May have a long drive if these dealers locally won't come down in price.

Remember that the company that offers the warrantee makes money on their sales. What the decision boils down to is "Can I afford to insure myself?"
I only buy insurance (insurance is what you are buying) on things that would present a big problem to me if I had to foot the bill myself. Of course, if you are much harder on a car than the average person--or if you are really unlucky--you had better buy the insurance.

Might also look for a 2012, they're also in your price range & they have a few upgrades over the 2011.

I just bought a 2011 4.6 with a little under 36K with the extended warranty. 20K for the car $1200.00 for the warranty CPO. I am covered until the car is paid off in 4 years. Then its a matter of do I sell or keep. In my opinion you would eat up $1200.00 in a couple visits. To me its a good investment I know others do not agree though.

Well okay guys. I just put a deposit down on a CPO 2011 4.6 white with 19k miles for $22,900. I think I got a pretty good deal. Right at 24k out the door. $130 one way ticket to Ohio to pick it up and then a 9 hr. drive back to NC. Should be a fun drive home :). Thanks for all your help and info in the threads that I started. I will keep posting on the vehicle throughout my ownership. These forums have been invaluable.

you have a Gennie. Surely you can get from Ohio to NC in less than 9 hours.

Haha ya you're right. It's gonna take some time to adjust my travel estimates.

I believe you did well. I'm looking to put at least 225,000 on mine and the way its running now it should go to 400,000 miles.
