  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Under the Hood

I was under the hood today removing the flying H from the intake and adding the Wings logo. While the wings didn't completely cover the oval left after removing the H, it still looks OK and better than the H. Removal and installation took 15 minutes, total and went just like others here have described it.

While under the hood I noticed a couple of things, minor, really, but disappointing.

First, there's no light! A car in this price range should have an underhood light. How much could it add to the cost?

Secondly, where the strut towers would bolt up, there's just holes. Again, what would it cost to put a couple of grommets in there?

Looking into those holes I could see a little of the front suspension without having to remove those big belly pans. It looked like the struts have been replaced, on the Ultimate 5.0, with coil overs with separate fluid reservoirs.

I've looked around the web and haven't been able to find any information describing this suspension. Does anyone have a good description of what is going on there? Sway bar sizes, spring rates, shocks, control arm materials, that sort of thing?

Agreed :D - I will have to take another look at those strut tower holes and see if there is anything we can purchase to plug them.

Take yours back to the dealer. I just checked mine out and my Strut Towers have plastic plugs in the top of them. They can probably just pop them off another car on the lot and plug them into yours. Just a thought.

That's probably why mine don't have them! LOL

I'm going by there today, I'll stop and see if service has a couple of them.

Can you guys post pics of the "with" and "without" plugs on the strut towers?

Went to the dealer today and asked for the plugs at the parts counter. Counterman looked me up and input my vin, came back with a parts diagram that showed a strut suspension.

I told him my car didn't have a strut suspension. He looked at me like I had two heads then told me that the parts diagram was right from Hyundai and, of course I have a strut suspension.

I then pulled up a picture on my phone and asked him to show me where the strut towers were bolted down. Of course he couldn't.

All this time he's acting very annoyed and, believe me, I'm getting more annoyed.

Another 5 minutes staring at the screen and he tells me he found another diagram and it shows a piece of tape over the holes. I asked what he meant by "tape" and, again, he looked at me as if I was just annoying the shit out of him and said, you know, tape. I asked if by this he meant regular sticky on one side tape and he said, yeah, sticky sided tape.

Now I know, whatever they call it, its just not a piece of tape so I said, "OK, give me two pieces of the tape they call for." He tells me he can't, because there is no part number for it.

I explained that I wasn't satisfied with two open holes where the strut towers would normally bolt down so what did he suggest.

At that point he tells me he'll email Hyundai and ask them. He'll let me know when he gets a reply.

Hyundai has a great car at a great price in the Genesis but they'll never sell more than a few per month per dealer until they improve the dealer experience.

I would have walked him out to a car on the lot and popped the hood and said I want these :D... Maybe he would get the point.

Good for you standing your ground. Be sure to let us know if and what response the parts department gets. It always amazes me how these folks forget that we are THE crucial link in their employment chain. No customers, no job....

He was to lazy to do that so he called over to sales and had someone there take a picture and send it to him.

I guess he didn't believe the picture I showed him.

Its funny how the Japanese knew that the luxury car experience isn't just about the car and the price. Lexus and Infiniti tried their best to copy the German car dealer experience and largely succeeded. They were rewarded with volume sales.

Those of us willing to put up with a sub par dealership experience to get a better value in the hardware are definitely in the minority, as the slow sales of the Genesis and Equus show.

The only place it matters to me is in resale value and I intend to keep this car until that's no longer an issue but, as an observation, it looks like, for most people, the dealer experience is as important as the car and the price.

Just as a FYI my car came with two black round "stickers" covering the empty strut mount holes.

As for the buying experience, I am very happy with the dealer. I hope the service department experience is the same... I too plan on keeping my car a long time. Right up to 9.9 years or 99,999 miles and unload it before the 10/100 warranty expires (HPP Extended included).

My 3.8 V6 Ultimate has empty holes. Plus a lot of dead leaves on the driver's side of the engine compartment.

I wonder if the covers are only on the V8?
