If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hello.

I've been following this forum for a few years before I picked up my Genesis Sedan. One of my most researched topics has been custom exhausts.

I'm unsure between which one I really want. Here are my options I've limited to myself and conditions.

*Absolutely no off road pipes*

A)Flowmaster Super 44 - Reported as loud but has some slight drone; muffler only

B)Dynomax VT - More conservative in sound when WOT but no drone; muffler only

C)Borla - Loudest of all options listed, less drone compared to a Magnaflow setup; full cat-back system. Some of my peers have suggested that I invest in a full cat back system.

I've adored the sound of V8's growing up and I would like to give the Genesis more of a voice. However my main concern is drone since I value how quiet the Genesis is. I'm leaning more towards Dynomax for no drone but I do like the "loudness" of Flowmaster. I wouldn't mind going with the Flowmaster if the drone is barely noticeable.

Opinions would be much appreciated, cheers.

*For the Genesis Sedan V8 owners with a custom exhaust I would love to see some interior driving videos to get a better perspective on drone please. Not enough interior driving videos on YouTube :)

What about the Magnaflow cat back?
It has more drone than Dynomax VTs, is a direct bolt-on and should satisfy the growl you desire.
Never heard the Flowmasters so can't comment on them.

As you can see I live in Penticton. I also owned a 2011 Genesis 4.6. I now have a 2013 R Spec. My old car was sold from the Lexus dealer in Kelowna.

I would like to do some custom exhaust to my car but cannot get sound chips of the different mufflers, do not want loud.

Let me known if you are going to do any changes.

Dave

I have Flowmaster Pro-shorty's on a primary cat back (secondary deleted) with custom X-pipe. It is loud. That being said, any good exhaust shop can tune the exhaust with drone tubes to cancel out the reverb at certain RPM. Right now i have them for 1600-2k. I need to add 900-1600 so i can carry on a conversation at cruising speed.

For reference, you can search my intake interest thread for a dyno run video that will give you an idea of what the exhaust sounds like. There is no drone at 70mph - almost as quiet as stock. The additional tubes will allow for pretty much stock levels until WOT.

You will not get the exact tone i have with the Flowmasters, but it will be close - the x-pipe was tuned to give a result i was looking for.

Thanks for the specs. I've watched your dyno video several times because I loved the exhaust note. That info will really help.

Magnaflow will drone considerably from my experience. I'm probably going to eventually switch the VT mufflers as they are the only ones I've seen that mute the drone and still give a great tone at WOT.

Incidentally, I've always read that Flowmasters flow the worst of any aftermarket muffler and sometimes under perform stock mufflers. They sound great but you can do better if you are looking to add a bit of power.

I think I'm going for the Dynomax VT as well. Only negativity I've really heard is the valve malfunctioning and rattling when the vehicle is running. Some say it was a manufacture error during the first shipments.

I will opt for an X pipe as well. I know I said I didn't want one but I'm hoping the VTs will aid in not producing drone. I'll be keeping the resonators and cats to try and keep everything legal for inspections.

Build will probably happen in a month or two.

Will an X pipe produce that weird happening where exhaust only comes out of one of the exhaust pipes when idling?
Obviously keeping each side separated from front to back keeps this from happening but it would be interesting to see if an X pipe would prevent it or not. I'm not sure what the car uses from the factory but it makes our cars look like their cheating and don't actually have dual exhaust.
Pisses me off.

I have had the MF system on my 12 rspec for a few months and there is very little drone. I have had the drone issue with other MF systems on different cars but not this one. Just enough sound for this car.

I drive the v6 but am using your 5.0 exhaust. I've had it for over a year and if anything the drone has increased a bit. I'm also running cat deletes. It's all subjective anyways. This drone is less than my elantra but still very prominent going uphill on the interstate especially.

The OEM unit is an H pipe - I'm running a Magnaflow X pipe muffler in place of the OEM part along with Magnaflow mufflers. The X Pipe allows a smooth flow from the engine to the exhaust tips and prevents exhaust scavenging. The x pipe muffler also aids in controlling drone and ridding undesired frequencies from the exhaust.

All Genesis sedans have a true dual factory exhaust.

On the new version they added a piece of foam to the bottom of the flapper to keep it from rattling.

Good to know. Thanks.

I used to have a 90 5.0 Mustang with factory exhausts, except for the FlowMasters, that included a X-pipe. I remember seeing the same kind of idle behavior with that setup. Nobody ever thought I had a single exhaust, though! :-)

+1 Thank you. I'll be sure to ask about that so I don't receive something from the first batch.

Preview of what is to come in 1-2 months; part 1.

Looking good, I love my MSA x-pipe, fitment was great and could still use all factory bracing (Something I could not do on the Coupe).

I can't wait to hear it

Looking forward to hearing this setup as well! I am doing the Dynomax VT muffler swap this Friday I hope! Looking forward to hearing a little something from this V8!

At this point I'm gonna do the X pipe, Dynomax VT mufflers, and wireless dual electric exhaust cutout. I don't have things to show at the moment but here's an awesome dude on Instagram by the name genesis_4.6 with some straightpipe awesomeness. All videos belong to genesis_4.6
