If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sorry if this has been discussed before but does anyone know what the maximum USB size is on the Genesis? I'm thinking of getting a USB 256GB stick which would fit most of my albums on to it.

Just didn't want to purchase something and it not work..

Thanks in advance.

Dave

I think some people have had problems with more than 32gig. I am not sure though.

I am using a 64 GB USB stick in my R-Spec. It currently has 44 GB of music on it and works great. I have NO problems accessing any of the music on it. The only drawback is that it takes the Gracenote service a l-o-n-g time to re-index the files after I add music to it.

I have approximately 46 GB of music on my PC. When I first got my car (2015 5.0 Ultimate) I just assumed that I could put it all on a 64GB USB flash drive and everything would work just fine. Unfortunately such was not the case. I loaded everything onto the flash drive sorted alphabetically. When I inserted the flash drive into the car, the system did not recognize anything beyond the letter E. USB playback seems for some strange reason to inexplicably be limited to the size of the jukebox memory. I realize that the jukebox and the USB are not the same and should operate totally independently from one another, and perhaps they do but this is how it seems to me. (I am FAR from a techie.) I tried various other workarounds without success. To solve the problem I loaded about 9GB into the jukebox and bought three 32 GB flash drives and loaded about 11-12 GB onto each. I am now able to insert a flash drive into the USB drive and everything works flawlessly.
I'm at a loss to explain the success wchettel is having with his installation. Perhaps there is some limitation inherent in Gen2 that does not exist in Gen1.
Hopes this helps. I would appreciate hearing from you on what solutions you find.

Why don't you guys get an iPod. It's a lot easier to organize music, I have my 32gb itouch connected with my genny all the time. I also sync my music over wife and its so much easier to make playlist and loading time is much faster then USB. Give it a try.

Is that Apple's new technology? :D

I decided to add some recently acquired music to my USB stick shortly after I posted the above comment. I now have 50GB of music on my 64GB USB stick. When I put it back into my R-Spec, it shows 6,606 files. All of these files are arranged like this: <ROOT>\Artist\Album\Titles.

The Lexicon system in my R-Spec has these USB limitations (from DIS Digital AVN Manual):
  • Maximum directory layers : 20 layers
  • Maximum length of folder name/file name : 255Bytes
  • Maximum number of folders which can be stored onto one USB : 2000 folders (including ROOT)
  • Maximum number of files which can be stored onto one USB : 8000
It looks like I'll hit the 8,000 file limit when I get close to the max capacity of the USB stick. So, it looks like the 64GB USB stick I'm using is the maximum size that I can effectively use.

I paid about $25 for my 64GB USB 3.0 stick - an iPod touch 32GB goes for about $230 at Walmart. The cost per GB is $0.39 for the USB and $7.19 for the iPod. That's more than 18 times as costly for the iPod. Why would you do that to play back music in your Genesis?

As wchettel correctly pointed out, the cost of the iTouch vs. the USB stick is cost prohibitive for those of us who do not already own an iTouch. I found an old 64GB iPod in the closet and tried to make that work. For reasons that I don't understand, every time I would stop and restart the car the iPod would freeze up.

Has anyone located this information in the G2 manual? I've scoured all of the books cover to cover looking for exactly this and have not been able to find it.

My 2013 R-Spec came with a huge package of manuals. They will not all fit in the case supplied for them. The two big ones are the 2013 Genesis Owners Manual and the Digital AVN System User’s Manual. The info about the limitations of the USB is on page 2-64 of the Digital AVN System User's Manual. Page 2-64 is the 3rd page in the section that covers the USB.

Come on guys once you go with sports car you don't look for mpgs. anyways 64gb ipod touch brand new you can find on ebay for 230-250, but its personal choice I prefer ipod over USB for following reasons. Wirelessly sync while car is in parking lot trust me its super convenient and 2nd as you can see I have cobra Iradar which required constant bluetooth connection to update new radar threats and cameras, also you need iso app to change any settings well it works very well for me, but again its just me :)
Oh and you can find a lot cheaper ipods used one too. I'm not apple fan at all, I use Galaxy S5 its just apple did a good job with itunes for organizing huge music libraries.

P.S I don't look at it as how much do I pay per GB, instead I think its an excellent upgrade.

Are you using the normal Apple cable and what interface do you get on the head unit?

Yup using the old apple 30 pin cable plug directly to the Genny USB port. It works with the new lightning cable too plus with that you get option to use siri too. As far as interface goes I think its pretty simple you get everything you can see on iPod like all the playlist, albums, art cover and the loading time is faster . I'll try to upload one screen shot may be that will help :)
By clicking the list button on top right corner you get all your playlist and songs options.

It's amazing that a 2010 Toyota will read a 64 GB memory stick and all files while my new 2015 Ultimate car will:
Not resume ipod songs after you restart the car
Is limited to 32GB for thumb drives

How Hyundai made a car that will nearly drive itself but still can't get 10+ year old Ipod technology working properly is beyond me.

I finally gave up screwing around with the various USB thumb drive "solutions" and followed the advice offered my many of you. I bought an iTouch. Media music now works flawlessly.

2 questions then - will it read all 64GB of music (or 60+?) and does it resume the last song played once you get back into your car? Any trouble with the incorrect artwork showing or the inability to change tracks (like with the regular ipod?)

Does anyone know what file types the system will read? I know when I transferred music to my Jukebox the system will only read the mp3 and not any other file type such as AAC or m4a, etc.

If using an USB will it read and play other than mp3?
