Replacing the Base Stereo with the 6-disc changer

Hi all,

I just bought a 2009 base Genesis with 39k on it. I couldn't pass it up as it was in near new condition. However the stereo in it has next to zero low end sound. I was wondering if anyone had tried replacing the base radio with the 6 disc changer version? I know there is a speaker count difference. I haven't found any pictures of the base stereo connections verse the 6 disc one. I would think the connections would be the same but just more of them for the other speakers. If this isn't possible then I may need to look into fabricating some subs and putting them in the trunk. Not my first choice, but this system needs some serious improvement. I looked into replacing the stereo with aftermarket but it appear there is no conversion kit for this vehicle.

Thats excellent info, Thanks! Those two look identical as far as connection. One thing I did notice though that both those units have bluetooth. The base radio doesn't. I need to know the connections for the unit without bluetooth to know if one of these could replace it.

Here are some schematic diagrams for the 2010 model, I think should be the same for 2009, I could be wrong. As far as for the Bluetooth, it's for the external Mic connections.

Thanks again. My hope here is that I could swap out the 6 disc changer for the single disc. I know that the model with the 6 disc changer have 14 speakers( i think I read that) but the reset I would think would be plug and play. I just don't want to waste money on the 6 disc model just to find out its not compatible.

You are right, just replacing the head unit is not going to work, you also need to replace the external amp for the 14 speaker system.

It is not clear to me if OP has 7-Speaker base system, or 14-Speaker Premium Package. But in either case, I would just replace/add a subwoofer/amp to the system to get more low-end sound. There are several threads on replacing the subwoofer.

Yeah, I have looked into adding a amp a sub box to the trunk to get the low end but to me that cheapens the car, not to mention loosing trunk space. Also it would have been nice to have Bluetooth in the stereo and not from a cheap aftermarket like contraption in the headliner.

You might want to look at UNAVI.

I'm looking at the UNavi someone posted for a 2013 Genesis. Thats alot of customizing and looks like I would have to damage factory parts which means I cant reverse it if something goes horribly wrong. I don't personally care about have a nav system. My phone takes care of that. But the bluetooth and backup camera are a nice touch.

You want to replace the head unit and amp that has 7 speakers (base trim) and replace with a head unit and amp from the 14 speaker system? I don't think that is feasible and would cost a fortune (14 speaker head unit and amp cost about $3K each). Then there is the problem of the missing 7 speakers.

If you want more bass, put in a new subwoofer and subwoofer amp. If you want Bluetooth get UNAIVI. Check out the UNAVI website.

I looked at the unaivi but that requires cutting the dash. Thats not an option I'm comfortable with. I can get a used radio and amp for under $1000, so thats not and bad as the unaivi + cost of the install. I couldn't find and detailed info about the unaivi hardware. Im hesitant to buy an off brand product like that. I would be comfortable with Pioneer, Alpine, JVC and the like. I'm surprised there is no conversion kit from those brands.

1. UNAVI does not require cutting of the dash. It is an exact fit if you have a 2009-2014 Genesis that does not have an OEM Navigation unit. However, it may be worth paying an authorized installer to do it.
2. UNAVI is the only option I know about (other than an extremely expensive custom install), and I been on this forum a long time, and have read a lot of posts from other members on this subject.

UNAVI won't help better your radio in anyway though. They gave it a screen for Navigation and a backup camera but skipped updating any of the actual radio features.

Are you looking to put in the 6 disk changer or the 5.1/7.1 head unit?...6 disk changer will just allow you to put 6 disks in your car, not change the amount of power each speaker receives.
