  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi,

I haven't found much info regarding the V6 sedan differential service. I have a 2013 3.8 sedan and I'm looking to replace my fluid (just turned 70,000 miles). I was wondering if anyone has done this service on their sedan and if so what kind of fluid did you use. I know it takes 75W-90. I drive 200 miles a day and I would like to go with a synthetic. I was thinking mobil1 or redline. Do either one of those meet the hypoid requirement? Would I need any additional friction modifier? I have a slight whine on decel at times and if possible I would like to quiet that down. I am the second owner so I am out of warranty. Do the V6's have a limited slip or is it an open diff? Thank you for your input!

There isn't a 1st Gen Genesis with a LSD rear end, but the rear brakes attempt to trick you into thinking it's a LSD. I have 45,500 miles on mine and I know my manual states to "inspect" the fluid at 60,000, but of course why crack it open and not replace the fluid? I'm planning on doing my myself, but I really haven't given it much thought since I only put 4,000-5,000 miles a year so it will take me a while. Maybe I'll make a DIY video when it's time. I've done both diffs on my Outback and let me tell you, it's easier than an engine oil change. No panels to remove, no filter to replace, just drain and refill. I bought a small pump from Amazon for a few bucks to pump the oil out of the diff fluid container and also tubing from my local auto store. Check out this video for some guidance. On my Outback I remove the fill plug first before the drain plug. You would hate to remove the drain plug first and then come to find out you either can't remove the fill plug or it gets stripped and than you're unable to refill the diff!

Under normal usage, inspect every 37,500 miles. No need to change.
Under severe usage, replace every 80,000 miles.

Correct, no need to change unless severe driving conditions or the axle has been submerged in water. Therefore, my guess is that it is synthetic. But a call to the dealer parts department should clear that up.

It was a previous rental so I would consider that severe use. I'm not far from that 80,000 mile mark. I was curious if anyone has changed their fluid and if so what brand did they use?

I think I recall a few doing it. You might want to use search to find the thread. You can also search this forum with Google.

Hyundai says.
1.48 US qt. (1.4L) hypoid gear oil API GL-5, SAE 75W/90
(SHELL SPIRAX X Equivalent)

If it is only 2 quarts, I would get it from my Hyundai dealer parts department, so you don't have to worry about whether it meets specs.

I just swapped it out the other day with Mobil1 LS 75W/90. I put 300 miles on so far and it has been great. The whole driveline seems smoother. The fluid was black but not milky. Very very minimal shavings on the magnet. Everything looked good. Glad I changed it out though.
