  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Bridgestone vs. Michelin

Usually, a W rated tire will have stiffer sidewalls, which results in better handling, but slightly less comfortable ride compared to V rated (H is even softer). A W rated tire will also usually have a shorter tread life than a V speed rated tire.

However, there are other complicating factors, such as the use of sophisticated (and expensive) tread compounds, tread pattern, and other factors that makes comparing tires from 2 different manufacturers a little harder.

Got it.

When you say less comfortable, is it that the road is felt more or is it noisy or some other factor that causes discomfort?

Mileage - I believe mileage is also lower - although it appeared from Tirerack reading that the mileage difference is like 1-2%.

I put all the info I had in the original post. These are Costco offerings, so if you have one to stop by, you could probably get the model #, etc. The quoted price was the out the door price, including taxes and the $15 per tire fee for putting them on, road hazard warranty, nitrogen fill,, etc., etc.

Then I am guessing that my Costco just did not quote the Michelin tire that you were quoted.

Oh these choices!

The sidewalls are usually stiffer for a higher speed rated tire, compared to the same tire manufacturer/design that is lower speed rated. So that translates into better handling (less body roll), but slightly less cushion on bumps, for the higher speed rated tire.

I don't know about all tire makers, but many Michelin tires are available in more than one speed rating for the same model and size of tire.

Thanks for the input. Based on what you said, and the fact that there are not too many bumps where I drive, I will take the better handling and will go for the W rated tire.

Thanks again!

Plan on getting somewhere between 20K and 40K out of them. Nice tires, while they last.

I get between 60,000 and 65,000 miles from the Bridgestone Serenity W rated. I am now on my third set. First two sets went an average of about 62,000 miles. The original Dunflops only lasted 18k. I now have just under 155,000 miles on my 2011 Genesis.

My original Donflops (to borrow your nomenclature) also are running out after 28k miles.

I bought one set of each of those exact tires about a year ago at Costco for under $800/set. Don't forget the $70 discount - they alternate between the two brands - you can't get both at once.

I was at Costco today, and stopped by the tire store. The guy behind the counter said the sale on the Michelins should run thru June, and the Bridgestones should then go on sale the beginning on July. Two months on, and two months off, was the way he put it.

Thanks for sharing! By then my car will need the tires :)

Yippie on your high mileage and reliable Genny.. Quick question... You run the new Serenity Plus? Like those any better than the original?

I have had one set of the originals and on my 2nd set of the Serenity Plus. And yes the Plus does last somewhat longer.

Thank you... Otherwise about the same?

yes, about the same. I have read that the plus is better in snow but here in Georgia I have not driven either in snow.

I would choose the Michelin. Quiet pricey but they have a good tread life.

I was told when I stopped in to Costco that the Bridgestones go on sale tomorrow, so I'm probably going to stop in and order. Should be able to get them by Saturday for install. The guy I talked to said he was pretty sure the tread life warranty was more like 50K than 75K as I had been originally told.

I stopped by a local Hyundai dealer here in Jacksonville to ask about doing an alignment, and I've got a 60K maintenance coming up. While there, he tried to sell me on Kuhmo tires. I didn't read anything on TireRack that made me think those are a better tire, just cheaper. Anybody have any experience with the Kuhmos? Right now, I'm still leaning towards the Bridgstones.

Well, the Bridgestones are on, and aligned at the local dealer. So far, I'm happy with them. Drove thru one of the afternoon downpours Jacksonville seems to be blessed with this time of the year, and the wet traction in deep water was great. Of course, for brand new tires, it better be! ;) Got a 900 mile round trip coming up this weekend, we'll see how they do for highway cruising then. I was a little surprised though, looking at the speed chart, it looks like a speed rating of "V" (149) would be what this car would call for. What they put on were speed rating "W", (168). Other than the fact that the car will never go that fast, the tread-life warranty is 50K instead of 75K. The Costco salesman pitched it as a one step better tire. Maybe, but I also see it as a tire that might wear out faster. What do you all think?

I've got Michelin pilot alpin z rated tires on nineteen inch rims. Bit of a jarring ride on the stock 2009 4.6 but better than stock rubber. In the winter I run Nokian Haka studded on the factory eighteen inch rims. The tread life isn't great on the Michelin tires but not bad.

I'm trying to avoid high-performance stickey rubber that only gets 20K miles before they are worn out. Been on the short end of that too many times. I got about 30K out of the Sumotomo's that are on it now. The price on those was less than what I just paid for the Bridgestones, but I want a tire that is going to last for a while, and doesn't give up *too* much performance to get the tread life. Yes, I want my cake and eat it too!! :)
