  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Had two really WTF moments in the Genny this week. As some of you might know I received a speeding ticket recently, since then I have been using the smart cruise control religiously, local, highway you name it. (Gas mileage really improved btw!)

So I'm cruising at about 45mph early this week and up ahead there is a pick up stopped at a red light, my car not only did not slow down it sped up and so I hit the brakes just as the huge AES symbols and sounds kicked on!

Later in the week doing 30 I changed lanes, car n front of red light stopped yet Genny does not slow, AES kicks on and I hit brakes hard. Here I thought to myself, maybe I tapped the brakes on lane change? So I brushed it off.

This morning a similar event doing 47, one car at red light ahead, I'm really hoping the brakes will come on yet the genny made no signs of slowing whatsoever so I brakes hard but before AES warning.

So am I doing something wrong here, is smart cruise control not intended to stop the Genny at red lights when a car is fully stopped there??

When a car in front of me is already "locked on" and then stops, never had an issue. Only upon approach to a fully stopped car.

Just my 2 cents... The smart cruise control doesn't go out farther than you set it. You can't expect it to see hundreds of yards ahead for a stopped vehicle. Also, if you switch lanes, it shows the gap between the 2 vehicles and speeds up, until the car in the new lane is tracked.

Sounds like it's working fine.

I love this feature on my Genesis. However I don't believe it was intended for use in this manor (stop and go city driving). Although I use mine this way I also am always prepared to stop if I feel it is not reacting soon enough. This situation has probably never happened to me because I chicken out to soon and react.

I've had this happen a few times but agree with WASNT. i usually have my distance set at 2 bars and works fine when tracking but at higher speeds with a stopped car in distance AES is sometimes first to react. I have used the SCC extensively in DC and Baltimore traffic and it greatly reduces fatigue, fortunately at home in upstate SC it's not generally a problem.

Mine behaves the exact same way. It would appear the the adaptive cruise control cannot see a stationary vehicle. It has never stopped soon enough for me to avoid hitting the breaks if i am approaching a stopped car. If it would stop automatically, it would do it so close to the car that it scares the hell out of me and likely the driver in front.

However, the cruise control does appear to function if the car in front of you is moving, even if it is very slowly. I have demonstrated this time and again by changing lanes to get behind a car still approaching a red light vs changing lanes to get behind a car already stopped at the light. If the car in front of me moves even a bit, my Genesis comes to a smooth stop.

Thanks for the feedback guys, glad to hear this is more a case of user expectation error than a glitch in my unit. I am a bit puzzled at the situation though, why ignore idle cars within a certain range?

On my way home today a guy was slowing down for a red light and then switched lanes to turn left, meanwhile my car immediately starts accelerating towards the stopped car in my lane! I think ill relegate the SCC to the highway, I'd rather not find out just how good the AES system is.

Mine works flawlessly. I am always prepared to hit the breaks just incase but the car slows down and stops. Nine times out of ten I have to hit the button for it to take off again because it has timed out but it does work. I didn't like how it worked with my setting set to one car. In town I set it at the furthest distance setting allowed.

I agree. Works as a experiment only if the car in front is moving, comes to a stop and moves again (any distance setting).. And maybe I have the AES settings set wrong... It will never auto brake. Just like the 2012, the 2015 will produce a lame sound and red indication (on 2015 the HUD shows something too), no braking... I have experienced this twice where I missed being way ahead of flowing traffic coming to emergency stop on highway. No way, if I had not been on the brakes would the AES on its own effort get the car stopped.. Where can I test this? Need to find a place that has something like a car wash tunnel curtain to see if the car will stop on its own. If it goes past, the curtain is harmless to the car.

Running around with foot ready to take action, is less relaxing/workload reducing than just driving the car myself.

Both my light twins, have auto pilot that will fly the plane to minimums to land. Yes, I still have other workload that includes GUMP, throttle, flaps, and cockpit duties. But it works every time. Something you can generally rely on to reduce workload in challenging settings.

Over time these tech advances will become more of real solution, and less of a toy to show off in certain narrow settings.

That is a great idea to use a carwash as a test platform. My ACC brings me to a stop flawlessly, although my 15 sonata is smoother about doing it. AES has given me the buzz and light but has yet to apply the brakes. Isn't there a speed range that you have to be in for it to work?

Back to the owners manual for me... The AES should be stopping the car as I have read prior. The ACC only brings it to a stop if the car in from is moving. Even ever so slightly. As I experienced in. Both 2012 and 2015. May be cockpit trouble on my end. However, the other reports here seem to confirm limitation as more of a aid or toy than real product.

Suggest folks read the manual to understand the limitations/function of the SCC unit - page 5-68 in particular.

If there is a car ahead of me and slowing at a light, I can trust the SCC to bring me to a gentle stop behind the car. If the stopped car is not being tracked by the SCC, and is already stopped, I know I have to get on the brakes myself. This has become second nature for me. I recognize it as a limitation on the SCC system. Hopefully, in years to come, the SCC will become smarter and, perhaps the radar will become more powerful, and I can trust a new car of that era to stop in all instances.

The worst situation is when my car is stopping under SCC control and the car it is tracking suddenly darts into another lane. My car will accelerate strongly even though there is another stopped just ahead. This is another situation that has become second nature to react to. I always have my braking foot ready as the car slows at a light.

Most times, I can simply let the SCC do everything and it does it quite well.
