Genesis vs Camry

Good afternoon and happy holidays to all. I'm in the market for a used car and have been looking @ 2007-2009 Camry's or 2009 Genesis v-6. My mind keeps telling me to go with the 'bullet-proof' Camry while my heart whispers 'Genesis '. I know that no used car is without fault, but the Camry does have a great reputation. From what I have read, it seems that the Genesis (2009 v-6) has a strong following as well, despite some major issues having been well documented. I feel the Genesis is much more car for the money, but some of the tranny and electrical issues reported, do have me a bit concerned. Any advice/suggestions or feedback that could help me in my quest would be greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful day.

Do you like a numb front wheel drive experience but bulletproof reliability or a fun rear wheel drive experience that has more amenities but is still trying to work its kinks out? I think as a second owner you don't get the warranty but don't quote me.

Camry Very smooth ride. Less power. Front wheel drive.

Genesis quiet ride but firm. powerful V6. Rear wheel drive.

If in your price range a 2012 V6 Genesis with tech pkg. gives a smooth ride plus many luxuries.

The Camry is a hollow tin can in comparison to the Genesis. I test drove a 2012 Camry to replace the wife's car which got totaled out and the wife hated it. We ended up with a fully loaded 2012 Hyundai Tucson Limited to accompany my fully loaded 2010 Genesis 4.6.

Very few transmission problems reported on the 2009-2011 Genesis V6. The 2009-2011 Genesis V6 used an Aisin transmission (same as used on some Lexus and other makes). Aisin was originally formed as joint venture between Toyota and Borg-Warner to make RWD transmissions.

The 2009-2011 Genesis V8 used an equally reliable ZF transmission, used in BMW's and other cars. In 2012, Hyundai switched to their own 8-speed transmission for both Genesis V6 and V8 sedans.

The higher the trim level, the more electrical/audio problems one will encounter on the 2009 Genesis sedan. Base Trim has been extremely reliable, Premium Package a little less reliable, and Technology Package had some audio/Nav problems reported that were well above average in number for such a car.

I can't speak to the 1st Gen Genesis but the Camry does seem to have a very empty, noisy ride.

Hello and Happy New Year to all. I will be going to see a 2009 V-6 Genesis with Tech pkg in Long Island tomorrow and was wondering if there is anything in particular I should be looking for/at besides the obvious things? Is there anyway to determine if there have been issues with the electronics associated with the tech pkg? Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated. Tnx.

Out of pocket expenses on car trouble will be much less on the crappy little Camry. The 09 Genesis will be much more fun to drive, but can be as expensive to repair as a E class Benz.

+1 , and also the 09 Genesis have a very very stiff ride.

Bill...your reply has nudged me a bit closer to the Camry. My friend owns an E-class Benz and I know all too well the expense associated with maintenance of those cars. I did not think the cost of maintenance for a Genesis was compatible with that of a Benz. If that is the case, then I may have to put the Genesis on hold for now. Tax for your input.

The Genesis is much more reliable than a Mercedes, however it is a luxury car with similar systems as a Mercedes. FYI the transmission service can be over 600.00 for the V8 Genesis with the Zf transmission which is also used by BMW, Bentley and other high cost vehicles vs. 425.00 for my Mercedes. Electrical repairs can also be costly as the car ages. But then again my Genesis is as reliable as the sunrise at 173,000 miles.

I'm not sure about the 6 speed transmission, but the 8 speed Genesis transmission can cost $8,000 to $9,000 to replace. If you have the big navigation screen, it can cost $3000. If you don't have the full 10 year, 100000 mile coverage, it can get sticky.
