  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

With all of the talk lately of the Genesis brand and the N performance line I thought it may be fun to discuss what we see coming with respect to the brand and the potential for a stronger aftermarket presence with respect to the Genesis line.

My hope is that with the introduction of the TTV6 and the trusty Tau powerplants being used that the N performance division could be the catalyst for an aftermarket interest to begin to develop in these cars. We know and understand their value and performance but to many people in the car community Hyundai is still an afterthought. The Genesis coupe certainly helped with its strong aftermarket following but the sedan has never really taken off despite the strength of the 5.0 and r-spec platform.

Obviously the only reason an aftermarket community would develop around these cars would be to generate profits, and without a large number of people wanting parts the numbers simply aren't there to invest in R&D to manufacture the goods.

I absolutely love my G2 and I like the fact that its underappreciated and that I never see another modified one around. It would however be great to be part of a larger community that grows and develops over time to support and appreciate these cars as Hyundai continues to progress in the marketplace.

As a business person I know this will take some time to develop. My realistic expectation is the launch of the Genesis brand and corresponding N performance divisions will open the door and hopefully open some eyes to the potential and quality behind the Hyundai and Genesis brands. We have to start somewhere and I hope the exciting changes taking place now can be the genesis of something great.

I suspect that warranty concerns will limit the number of owners willing to go into the after-market to make changes to their engines. Hyundai is not known to be particularly forgiving on the issue of after-market parts, perhaps partly because of their 10 year - 100K mile drivetrain warranty for original owners.

Yes but this is true for many other manufacturers as well. Most of the people that would purchase a 50k+ car with the intention of modifying it aren't very concerned with the warranty aspect.

You are correct though, Hyundai has been notoriously difficult to deal with on issues with modified cars. They make it very hard to modify ECUs and tune the cars, and for an understandable reason.

Again, I think that the guys that are going to purchase these cars for the purpose of modifying them are a different group then the traditional value shopper that takes great peace of mind from the Hyundai warranty.

I have no doubt that once cars like the G80-N are rolling around - aftermarket companies will be doing massive amounts of research - just like they do with other premium performance automobiles. Since Genesis products will be more expensive - they know they'll be dealing with people who are more likely to splurge on high performance improvements...

Agree. As I said before, this isn't the same demographic as those that would never do anything to modify the car while its in its warranty period. Most of the people modifying cars to this degree don't keep the car past the bumper to bumper warranty anyway.

I was taking a dremel to my hood after having the car for two months.

Think about this... People are going to be criticized for owning a Genesis the same way people were criticized for owning a Lexus when they first came around. Genesis Motors is planning on being in the "performance" game so there will be "quick" cars and some owners will want to make them "fast". The M5 is quick. A modified M5 is fast. It'll happen because somebody with a Genesis G80-N will want to make absolutely sure he can beat 99% of the M5s on the road - if for nothing else but to prove a point...

Interesting read on the N performance line and the G70:

exactly..... it will be very excited to see what can be done with these cars once they are out. hopefully Hyundai makes the ECUs more tuner friendly.

Car blogs drive me nuts. Pseudo-journalism + 0 real content. Korean Car Blog has mastered this, and is the primary reason people still thing a 5.0 Coupe is coming out "this year", or that the V6TT will make "480hp"...
Who said it was journalism? It's just a summary of available info from those that might have missed it. Most of what is quoted was announced in the G90 Launch event and interviews afterwards.

For example, they talk about the 3.3 TT with 365 HP and 376 lb ft of torque (which it actually delivers in the G90 tune) - I see no mention of a 480 hp V6, so what is driving your reaction to the article?

Performance wise, they specifically tease about the G70 and the 3.3 TT at 37:16 and 39:15 in the attached video from the LA G90 event. They also confirm a high performance Genesis Coupe is coming at 33:38 in:

Like where I stated "pseudo-journalism"? It's speculative clickbait where it isn't just regurgitating established info.

Apart from the text you quoted where I specifically cited another blog?

I watched the reveal. ;)

Ok - was confused as you responded to my post and your comments are sort of off base for the item I linked to - that article had nothing to do with the Korean Car Blog.

Apart from where I likened the two for being inaccurate sources for information?

My actual statement was "Car blogs drive me nuts", if you'll recall. This is a general statement supported by specific reasoning later in that post.

This correlative discussion should not be so difficult, but I can make it more simple; you blog source is as useless as the next.

But you quoted my post which had nothing to do with the Korean Car Blog in responding? So what drove you nuts about that article given that the blog source I linked to was factually accurate to what Hyundai themselves shared - so how was that useless?

Specifically, the last speculative section. The Hyundai info could have been complete/accurate right from Hyundai. Thus, my issue with clickbaitblogjournalismattempts.

The point of my posting the link was to provide some info from the G90 launch that you otherwise would have to watch the whole video to gleen - that's all. I'm not seeing the clickbait you refer to as everything on non-announced Hyundai models is speculative - but I'd rather hear speculation straight from Hyundai as was captured in that link.

This is not Hyundai's speculation:
"Could that something be a little bigger, with eight cylinders and maybe a pair of turbochargers, too? Biermann wasn’t willing to say."

I understand if you weren't "in the know" with how the Coupe and Sedan rumor mill progressed since '09, but I'm trying to make the point as simply as I can, and you're too busy defending "car blog X" to grok.

Not defending any blog - just don't see the issue with them asking speculative questions to Hyundai themselves...

And Hyundai responded to the bloggers speculation with speculation of their own: "This V8 in direct injection – a nice V8 engine. But for the future as you know regarding emissions and so on, if you go to performance area it might be you need to go to turbo" - that could be interpreted as we'll add a turbo to the V8 OR due to emissions, etc., we'll focus on smaller turbo engines for performance.

I know! And making the ECU tuner-friendly is a good and bad thing for Hyundai. On the bad side, it means they're going to have people coming in with blown motors asking for a new one under warranty. On the good side - it makes all the high performance enthusiasts crave the vehicles (more sales)...
