  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

5.0 Gen Life Build thread

I have done a large amount of research on the intake. I was going to fabricate one (two because of the dual intakes) but decided not to because of a few reasons:

1) an intake with no viable tuning solution would do nothing for performance, and as you mentioned it could actually reduce performance. Until there is a tuner that is able to crack the ECU on the 5.0 this will remain true.
2) If a tuner does crack the ECU, any gains would be negligible. Even on my GT500, an intake and a tune can add 50-60 rwhp, but that engine is high 400s at the wheels stock. Our cars assuming normal parasitic loss of 20% are probably 340-350 at the wheels. I think the max an intake would do is generate another 20-30 hp at the wheels, if we are lucky. Given the cost of manufacturing and weight of the car there simply isn't a good reason to dive deeper into this modification.
3)The Genesis is my daily and I don't care for it to be a little faster. It's plenty quick as it is. If I want to go fast I have other cars for that.

Well not all of us have the extra cars that we can go fast in so we want to be able to mod what he have. I would love for there to be an intake option available. An extra 20-30 hp is a nice amount of extra hp to pick up. Obviously having a tune to match this with would be most beneficial.

other than the sound any performance benefits would be negligible. running something without a tune presents a whole new issue of problems. I was using a supercharged V8 as a comparison - likely the N/A nature of the tau engine would not even yield a 20hp difference to the wheels after factoring in the parasitic loss. I did not account for the N/A vs boost in my original post. The gains are enhanced by boost so using the same ratio on the genesis would not be accurate.

I understand modding what you have, but you should understand that any gain or increased power you might feel are going to be much more in your head than translated to actual whp.

Then there is there is the manufacturing behind such a part. With such a limited market any production runs would be limited in quantity and price would be expensive compared to intakes for more traditionally modified cars. When I checked a few months ago we determined the material cost was nearly $700. Again that is my cost to fabricate it, not what I would sell it you for. There are two intakes so obviously the price has to account for that.

So now you have an intake system that cost roughly $1,000 - but that is just for the hardware - you haven't even purchased a tuner that plugs into the OBD2 port or the actual tune itself which would need to be uploaded to your ECU. For the Shelby a typical SCT tuner is $300, and tunes are $100.

So all said and done you are anywhere from $1000-1400 for 20 horsepower.

If money is of no object then who cares, but that seems to me like an awful $ per HP ratio.

If you really want to improve your car, invest in suspension components. Beefier sway bars will be coming soon. Our cars would not benefit from a strut tower bar because the effectively already have one. Upgrade your brakes - rotors, pads, lines, and fluid.

Huddleston Im following you on IG so yeah man we need to link up...

We can for sure. I will be getting Saturday - I will PM you closer to time and we can figure something out.

That is the harsh truth right there
