Regular vs Premium gas

Guys,

I am wondering if I should put in regular or premium gas in my 5.0?
I think regular should just fine but would I get a performance penalty like from 420 hp to 410 hp or something like that?

My 2nd question is if let's say I put in regular this time. Can I put premium gas next time or I have to go with regular once I put regular gas and vice versa i.e., I have to keep on doing premium if I do premium now (just like oil change?). Sorry if it sounds like a noob question

Anyways, yea you can change the gas anytime you want. The computer will auto tune it self if it detect any knocking because you switched between gas grade.

I mean those are crank HP numbers provided by Hyundai. After drivetrain loss, the difference in power is likely not perceptible.

I'm betting that on the 5.0 V8, you would get enough increase in mileage to offset the additional cost, using premium gas.

Same with Mobil 1 Synthetic - almost certainly, I would bet the increased mileage offsets the additional cost. I use to measure the actual increase in mpg when I switched over from the factory garbage, and always saw an increase in mpg. Mobil 1 was marketed in 1975 specifically for that reason - increased mpg.

I saw it somewhere once - will see if I can find it again. However, like the 5.0 difference, it was not really very significant...

Nope - unlike the 5.0, the advertised power numbers for the 3.8 are for regular gas!

The price difference between regular and 91 is literally $0.10/gallon. 16 gallon tank X $0.10 = $1.60. Why is this even a discussion? Spend the extra $1.60 or sell your car and buy a Prius.

where i live in South Dakota the difference between 87 and 91 octane is usually about 50 cents a gallon!

That is correct. It is also the case the Hyundai did the EPA mileage testing with regular for the 3.8 and premium for the 5.0 (at least in the USA).

Wow, that's really good to hear. Here in South Florida Premium is around 50-60 cents more per gallon. Around $10.00 more per tank.

You could split the difference and fill up when around half a tank and you'll get better performance but save some money.
