  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

USB Audio Issue

I love the USB connector in my Genesis. I have three sources for music; 2 USB thumb drives (4 and 8 gig) and one 100-gig hard-drive. They all play music perfectly.

There is one problem though that I think may be a limit of the system, but I want to be sure, so I'm posting this here...

The USB thumb drives, when the car is powered on after a stop or overnight, pick up exactly where they left off, -same song and exact point-within-the-song when the car was shut off.

The hard drive, though, always returns to the first folder (alphabetically). There are nearly 6000 MP3s on the hard drive and even if I stop for a moment and shut the car off, it starts always at the same song and folder (top of the alpha list) and I have to navigate through hundreds of folders to get back to where I was.

Has anyone else seen this issue or perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks!

P.S. I find it really amusing that Edmund's long-term Genesis and Audi A4 (which has a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine) get mostly the same monthly fuel economy averages. I owned 5 Audi's and I'll never go back, --to think I could get the same fuel economy as a luxury Genesis!

Davevi,

I know exactly what you mean.
I too had a hard drive and it would randomly decide to go back to the beginning.
I tried 2 different brand of HD's and they both would reset back. It drove me crazy as I have 15,000 songs.

I then tried a 32 gig USB drive but it would also reset to the beginning.
I couldn't take it anymore so I purchased lots of 4 gigs USB sticks and they've been working great since.

Just sharing my experience with you.

God I love this car!

Have fun...

I use a 2GB USB stick. If I turn off the sound system before I shut down the engine it will always start with the first song in the first folder. If I shut off the engine without turning off the sound system it will continue with the same song before I shut off the engine.

Its all quirks in the software. I have learnt not to try find logic in how the usb system behaves.

The fastest way to get back to song number 2576 is to randomize the play. Then when you keep hitting next on your steering wheel, it will soon enough hit close to a nearby song, and then i can linearize the play.

One Warning though: Randomization also plays songs from various other folders randomly, so the above works best if you have just 1 folder with loads of songs.

fuzzynuke, your USB stick is behaving differently than my 4GB stick. I'm able to randomize a folder (hit "back" button on DIS, select folder, move DIS right, select "random"). It doesn't play contents from the other folders on my Tech system. The premium might work differently, though.

My system behaves the same way.

It will not randomize outside the folder it is playing.

I thought this RDM could get me past having to re-find my last song in the last folder of my hard drive, but alas RDM only does so within the folder.

I'm sure this will be fixed at some point.

All this still works better than any Audi in-car electronics I ever had. :)

When you right click on the Folder, you can Randomize that folder Only.
But when you right click on any SONG, you randomize ALL folders.

Right clicking? Maybe you have the tech package and have this ability?

In models without the color display and high tech package there is no right click capability. In my car there is a RDM button on the center console.

Anyone know of an equivalent in the mono-screened version of the Genesis?

When you right click on the Folder, you can Randomize that folder Only.
But when you right click on any SONG, you randomize ALL folders.

Arrrgg - it was right in front of me and this one has been hiding in plain sight all along. Thanks for posting this. Works like a charm.
