  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2011 Genesis sedan 3.8, and the engine has been making a whining noise. It started during the past year and has gotten progressively louder. It's connected directly with the engine speed (not the transmission), and the pitch increases as the RPMs get higher.

I'll certainly take this in for service soon, but I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this same problem and whether Hyundai covered it under the 10-year drivetrain warranty.

I have the exact car and about one year ago my car starting making a whining noise when it started but seemed to go away after a while but not always completely. I drove it for about 4-5 months like that and took it with 81,000 miles on the odometer and they said it was the idler pulley. Not covered under warranty and can't recall the exact amount I paid but it was several hundred dollars.

I had my idler pulley replaced under warranty on my 2012 3.8.

Was that the 5 year - 60K mile warranty, or the 10 year - 100K mile drivetrain warranty?

it's the idler pulley. i had the same issue with my 2011 3.8. had it covered under warranty

I do a lot of long distance with my '10 3.8. I have the whine that I notice on the road. I don't use the radio a lot, because we talk, but I've determined the whine is the differential. I took the service manager for a ride, and he didn't think it was loud enough to do anything with it. It's hard to notice on some pavement, but on quiet pavement, I can hear it pretty good, and my hearing is bad. I'm pretty sure it's not the engine.

Is the Idler Pulley covered under the Power Train Warranty? I recently bought a 2011 G-Coupe 3.8L; have a whining noise that showed up recently and read where people have talked about the Idler Pulley being the problem. Wondering is this would be covered under a warranty? Thanx

Have you figured out what the noise is due to? I have a Genesis coupe 2011 and it does the same thing. I determined it seems to appear at about 24 mph when the car is cold. Any Ideas? Thanx

Took it in for service. It was indeed the idler pulley. They fixed it for under $200; not covered under the drivetrain warranty.

I know the belts aren't covered. But what reason could they possibly have for the idler pulley not being covered? That's an engine part.

My car makes the whining noise at about 30mph, mainly when the car is cold. It seems to go away after I've driven it for a little bit. Where did you think you heard the noise coming from? Did the whine seem based on rpm's or the speed of the car?

...and if the engine still whines after I've replaced the idler pulley (which was a simple 15 min job by the way). Part was about $115 through CarID but the job was easy. However, 3.8L 2012 Sedan still has a nice whine but everything functions - alternator, water pump...
