If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Anyone have a way to clean the black soot off the exhaust tips. I'm not sure if they have ever been cleaned but I have only had the car for 6 months and this is my first detail cleaning of these. I've tried the green scotchbrite pad; I've tried a little throttle body cleaner on a rag but it seems to be baked on. Any solutions to get these back to the original brushed finish would sure be appreciated.

+1

Yes, the black soot is a problem. I try to stay ahead of the game by keeping paper towels in the garage and wipe them down after it is turned off. Call me crazy, but sometimes I just run the engine for a few minutes so the tips get damp and then wipe them down. When I first cleaned them, I used a pre-wax cleaner and it worked. For more stubborn soot, I would probably try a bug and tar remover making sure to rinse it off quickly.

While at the Race (Mitty) I saw the guys in the pit, get this use Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner to remove gunk and rash.
I tried it. it works....

Use Nevr Dull. It's cotton wadding soaked in petroleum cleaner. It works wonders on baked on exhaust tips.

I'm also curious about this one. Tried to stay ahead of it, but there's one stubborn baked on spot that won't come off now after 7 months if ownership. :(

Spray 9 will get them clean
Then wax like you do the rest of the car

for caked on stuff on my wifes Sonata and my Genesis(both bought used), I used steel wool, then a scotch brite pad, then a little polish once all the gunk was off. Never really had an issue. the steel wool and cleaner easily knocked down the really caked on stuff, scotch brite pad reduced the little scratched from it and polishing compound and a polishing pad made them look fantastic.

This stuff works great but get some rubber gloves before using. This stuff has a strong petroleum smell that will get into your hands.

I use a magic eraser, yes, that is what you think it is

thats the softest kind, don't use anything but the soft ones on paint. car wash soap in high concentration, rub rub rub, polish off anything left with a D/A, seal right away, wax as desired

I HAD LITERALLY TRIED EVERYTHING I COULD THINK OF, EVEN WD-40 (yes, it is quite safe fore paint an is excellent at getting pinstriping off), then I tried the magic eraser. Holy crap, you will want to kick yourself, me, I couldn't, I want to kiss myself, good lawd, but even so I was fairly irritated no one told me this before. Mom had her G1 for 3 years prior to my trying the eraser, so believe me when I say, it was ON there, magic eraser got 90-95% of it off, polished the rest off, took all of 15 minutes per side

so this was all about my experience with the soot on the paint, but it will get it off the tips quite well too

I will post the earth shattering jaw dropping weasel kicking pics as soon as I find them, but i think they may be on an sd card in her car, so tomorrow maybe (she has the parisian blue? parisian grey? forget, its a bluish grey, but the color makes the before and after pretty impressive, as it would be on white for example)

I have a 2014 3.8 and find using a fine steel wool (000) or a stainless steel scrub pad (Away Scrub Buds) works exceptionally well on the steel tips. Not painted surfaces.

I used a scouring pad with some WD40, then used stainless cleaner/protectant to make it look like new again. Worked like a charm, thanks for all the tips! (pun intended). Hehehe

I use Birchwood Casey gun scrubber... worked well for me.

I use SIMPLE GREEN. Just spray it on, let it soak and wipe it off. Been using Simple Green since the car was new. Buy it premixed or buy a gallon and mix your own spray strength. use 50-50 mix of SG and water.
