If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi all,

When I start the car, HID lights are really bright white in color. However, after a while, it turns into yellow! I heard that it has something to do with temperature, but I wish it could remain bright white instead of yellow... does this happen to you all?

I attached a picture for reference.

TIA!

I would take it back to the dealer cause IMO those are NOT HID's
Please keep us posted.

Exactly. But for a while after the lights are on, they DO look like HID's :D!

Here I am attaching some more pictures taken inside garage. They clearly show how the HID lights are different from the halogen fog lights below.

Oh, by the way, the engine is OFF in these pictures. Maybe that makes a diffrence too?

Are you sure its HID? Not all Genesis have the HID.

HID light is similar to fluorescent light requires warm up time, very short, only 5 - 10 seconds. It appears blubluish during warming up and shifts to pure white eventually. The lights in first picture looks so yellowish is due to refraction effect of the projector lens. If the light is view at eye level instead of the downward angle, it should appear pure white.

the HID lights won't come on with the engine off. this is because of the high initial current required to ignite the "bulbs"

if you are able to turn your headlights on with the engine off that would lead me to believe you don't have HIDs, but there is an easy way to tell. Look on the actual headlight, from the outside, and down at the bottom in hard to read letters you'll see H7 in front of the high beam and D1S in front of the low beam (if it's HID) and H11 (if it's halogen).

Hope this helps. I know many people who have been frustrated at the color of the HIDs, including myself. See my new thread to come about this subject.

Trying not to "stand correct" you Jonah, but I can turn my HID's on when the car is off.:)

I can easily tell by the different light output with low beams, position lights, and fogs, that you have the HID.

No, I don't think it has to do anything with the temperature. You should check for its quality.

All HID lights turn somewhat yellow when they get wormer that's just what they do, I have an Acura TL that dose the same thing as well, my brother has BMW 535I and those do the same thing as well....you can turn on headlights in both cars with out the engine running!

interesting.. my 3.8 won't light anything but the parking lights if the engine isn't on. i wonder if there was a change in the production run at some point. you guys with Genesises that allow HIDs on with engine off, what serial number is your car? it's the last five digits in the VIN. i'll check mine and update this post

Wow. You have good eyes. How in the world did you ever discover this?
I checked mine, and yes, the "H7" shows up in front of the High Beam. After looking for quite a while, I can make out the "DIS" in front of the Low Beam, but in addition to the DIS (at least thats what I think it says), there are a lot of letters in front of the DIS. Most I can't make out, but I think right in front of DIS ist says DOT (but not sure). Also other letters in front of that.
The "H7" is hard to read. The "DIS" is very very hard to read, The other letters is almost impossable to read. BTW, I tried reading this in daylight in my garage using a flashlight af various angles. Will try again at night to see if it is clearer.

Again, you have good eyes.

I'm a bit surprised to hear these descriptions of the HIDs. My 9 year old Acura TL still has its original HID headlamps. They fire instantly, with a blue-white flash, and stabilize down to a very white beam in about 3 seconds, at the most. This color remains the same for the duration of their use; I have never noticed it varying under any condition.

I'm also not sure about the inrush current issue...these lamps are hugely more efficient than filament lamps, and, again, I've never seen so much as a dash lamp flicker when the headlamps are powered up, even with the engine off. Part of the beauty of these things is that they have their own regulated power supplies in the ballast unit, which makes them pretty much immune to dips in the car's bus voltage...

I'd agree with you except I've installed several different HID kits lately and non of the ones using the old mag-core ballast would light using the stock wiring. The newer digital ballasts (like those in all OEMs, including Genesis) would light one bulb, but to get two to light required a relay and a straight wire to a high current 12V source.

This leads me to believe that the initial current requirement is high. I should have measured it while I had the kits on the bench but I didn't.

After working for Hyundai if you get a Genesis with tech package you have HID's which should be a bright white after a few seconds from start up. If they are not pure white they are either A: aftermarket or B: halogen headlamps. Can't really diag the issue online but the local dealer will tell you free because you own one of their most expensive vehicles. You might even get a wash/vac too

I know, I am way late on this but that is not true. I have had 10,000k HID's in multiple vehicles and they never ever got anywhere near yellow. EVER!! They are White with a darker blue hue to them.:D
