  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Should I buy?

Hi guys!

New to the forum but have been following for a few weeks. Got a question for you all. First off, cash is an issue. I am not in the boat where I can go out and buy whatever I want, when I want. Still paying off that masters degree, so the next few years are looking for "most bang for my buck" type deals.

With that being said, it is time to upgrade my vehicle. Coming from a glorified Camry (Lexus ES 350) I have found that I LOVE the Genesis and want it to be my next vehicle. My reasoning for it was that I found a great deal on a '15, that I am not sure that I want to pass up. The problem? High miles. It has 89k on it. Red flags everywhere, and did a little digging on it. Apparently it was used for 2 years in NYC as an Uber car. Financially it could end up being a significant savings in price opposed to leasing a '17 g80, if the maintenance doesn't kill me on the way out.

Still looks great, runs great, interior and exterior are near flawless etc. Ultimate package, about 10k left on ptrain warranty, etc. History of logged maintenance shows service every 10 to 12 k miles...but again...Ride Share survivor.

I don't have an issue of turning a hoe into a housewife, as long as it will make a good housewife so to speak, but I am having trouble finding anyone sounding off about these vehicles once the 100k warranty wears out. Any input from the fan's here?

Thanks in advance!

It would have to be ultra cheap for me to touch it. I'd not pay more than 50% of book value for a NYC traffic car. Just stand out on any NYC corner and watch the cab drivers for five minutes and imagine how your car was used. I'd not go more than about $7k for it.

I wouldn't touch it at all. Powertrain warranty only covers items that don't normally go wrong.
Too many computers and electronic gizmos to go wrong. Are you prepared to spend money out of pocket to repair these items?
I bought mine used with low miles, one owner. But I was able to get a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty from the dealer.
Unlimited miles. We'll see how that works out, but I feel better about the purchase.
Cars are too complicated these days to not have a good warranty. Unless you got deep pockets.

While I agree with the advisability of an extended warranty if one is going to keep the car past 5 years or 60K miles, I am not sure I agree that there are not normally problems with the powertrain.

Since 2009, Genesis cars have had problems that required either transmission or engine replacement, that would cost $8K - $12K for parts and labor for a new engine or transmission if not done under the warranty. Generally speaking, Hyundai dealers don't repair those items, they can only replace them.

I wouldn’t recommend buying any premium brand car without warranty coverage if you can’t over an unexpected 8k fix. Any brand today trans issue comes up you will need a replacement etc. I would avoid any car used as a service car from any brand. Just to hard on all systems

Thanks for the responses guys...and the consensus is what I have been feeling anyway (mainly the reason I created the post). Looks like I will be digging into leasing options on something a bit newer!

The powertrain warranty is not transferrable. I recommend looking for a 2015 or newer. I would get either the tech or ultimate package on a 2015-2016.

2015's are coming off of leases and have very good prices, especially if you don't get the tech and signature packages. Take a look at sites like cargurus.com and carvana.com. They tend to have a good selection with low mileage, etc.

First off, Welcome! You chose the right car for your next purchase.

Diving in, if it has 89k miles and is not CPO, which I don’t think Hyundai even does, it will revert to the basic 5yr/60k mile warranty. Only the first owner and CPO buyers get the 10yr/100k mile warranty. Simply, you have no warranty on it besides corrosion and emissions.

I drove for Lyft with my previous car and it wasn’t all that bad. I only drove for them for 3 or so months so that may be why. If you are wanting this to be your daily driver, pass on it.

The car is great and you seem to already know that. Depending on your budget, a $25k car will be under $375/mo if your APR is lower than 5% or so. Leasing the G80 will probably double that payment. There are plenty of good cars out there but it all depends on your budget, which we don’t know. If you like the big four door saloons, check out a G8 GT, Chevy SS, the new Accord looks surprisingly handsome, Alfa Giulia, Charger R/T, Sonata, Mazda 6, etc.
