  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

One thing I am beginning to dislike about the nav system is how the "predictive speller" limits your ability to find streets. As you finish up a word, it will jump to limited choices, which may not be the ones you want. And, there is no way to put the right info in.

For example, today I was trying to type in an intersection "Park and Lincoln" in my nav system. The streets have been around for at least 40 years. so "it's not on the system" shouldn't be a problem. Yet, as soon as I was done typing "Park", choices were given that didn't include "Lincoln", and there was no way to type "Lincoln" in.

The other annoyance is you need to know if the street is a "road", "court", "way", etc as you are entering---if not you won't get your choice.

My 2004 Honda Accord with navi was a simpler system--yet didn't have any of these issues. In fact, after this incident, we entered the streets in the Honda Navi to compare---no problem.

My wife was so pissed today after the latest failed attempt to find a street that should was tempted to get rid of the car......!

I agree. The navigation system isn't intuitively obvious. If you have to read the directions to figure out how to work it it is too complicated. Wait til you finally get something entered and then find next week or next month it has disappeared. Then you need to reread the directions to re-enter the address.

You probably need to know the street number at the corner of Park and Lincoln.

I thought I was the only person having trouble with the Navi system. I am hoping that there is an update for this problem. For the time being, I use my portable Garmin for quick directions.

The biggest problem with the system is that it keys off of street name first. Today, armed with the street address and city of a destination I needed to get to, I entered the street name, only to find at least 5 variations of the street name, including no suffix, suffix, and suffix with 3 ordinal directions. Only after entering the name and selecting each one did I find the house numbers out of range.

The worst thing is that hitting the back button does not go back to the search result list but rather to the blank street name entry. It's like Russian roulette.

I never use the dial - I always use the voice commands. Easier and you can start with the city vs. having to start with the street.

Just to let you know that the company that does the software for Hyundai is Navteq. Go to www.mapnsoft.com. Phone # is 1-888-757-0010. tell them about your concerns, according to them there has not been a update for the Genisis as of yet.

Last week I purchased a satin purl white 4.6 with the tec package, like some one said, be sure to check the tire pressure when you get home. 33 pounds called for, great ride when 33 is applied.

I just called Mapnsoft. They said there will be an update available for the Genesis the 2nd week of January. Good news for all of us frustrated nav'ers!

Will there be a charge for the update?

I will be utterly shocked if it's not $199 like every other M&S update. Pretty much in line with the typical OEM nav system updates for other cars.

Navteq supplies the mapping data for quite a few GPS companies (including Garmin), and also for on-line websites. However, I don't know if they actually make software that makes the GPS run. Do you have some reason to believe that M&SOFT America is connected to Navteq? (Other than Navteq is the source of the mapping data).

I don't know about Hyundai GPS units, but on my Garmin GPS updating the mapping data is a separate process from updating the system software that makes the GPS run. Garmin does not charge a fee for system software updates.

IMO, the prices that auto companies charge for the GPS unit, and yearly mapping data updates, is outrageous.

Is that an update of the mapping data, or an update of the system software?

I've found the Nav system in my 2009 Genesis to be disappointing compared to the 2007 Toyota Camry I traded in.

I took a 6,000 mile trip from Seattle to Mobile, Alabama (and back, which accounts for the nearly 6,000 miles) recently. The Nav system was a letdown. Here are the gripes:

If you move the controller knob to a location, the distance to that location doesn't change. Unless you bump the controller; then it updates. That's just silly.

The icons are generic. The Camry Nav system had the logos (given the screen resolution, nearly recognizable logos) for many major businesses. A McDonald's restaurant would have the McDonald's logo; a Wendy's would have the Wendy's logo. Saves a step over the Genesis system where you have to push in the controller and scroll to "POI information."

Typographical errors. I found two (one where "foreign" was spelled "foregin" and another one I've already forgotten). Obviously, typing it in correctly WON'T result in a "hit."

Lack of "fuzzy" entries that's result in a match. For example, if you're searching for "Cavenders" in Amarillo, you won't find it. Enter the phone number, however, and you'll find it entered as "Cavender's." Searching for "Cavenders" WILL list two, but not the one in Amarillo. And, by-the-way, they're all Cavender's Boot City.

I have some other complaints about the Nav system, but some are just personal preference.

Trying to find locations by address has been such a PITA, I now use my smartphone to get a telephone number and search based on THAT. Haven't failed to get a match yet.

The day I would pay $200.00 for an update. I will use my Garmin in the car before paying that.

Break out the Garmin then. It's usual and customary for updates on OEM auto GPS units to cost that much. I'd imagine that most of that has to do with how much NAVTEQ charges for the map data plus the captive audience.

BMW: $199 list
Mercedes: $249 list
Honda/Acura: $199 list
Toyota/Lexus: $265 list
Cadillac: $199 list
etc.

My dealer told me that if there's an update within 60 days (or 90--can't remember which) of your car purchase date, the update will be free.

Picked up my 2009 3.8 V6 Genesis Sedan on 12/31. When my sales rep was showing me the NAV system, we were unable to put my street address in. Asked for a update as my date on the NAV software was April 2008!
Stopped by dealership and was told that update would be available by end of January. Service Manager was not sure of how the update would be installed but said that they would call me when the update was ready.
Still haven't figured out how to cancel navigation without completely deleting the address. Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks!

All of the Tech packages (both 2009 and 2010) have the 4/2008 database since an update hasn't been released since the car has been in production.

It's unknown whether the update will do anything but update the map database, so while it's possible that it will address that nag, don't count on it.

You can "cancel" navigation by either using voice command to "suspend route guidance" or if you're in map view, pressing the controller and then selecting "suspend route guidance" from the menu that pops up.

...or if you're in map view, pressing the controller and then selecting "suspend route guidance" from the menu that pops up.

This is the same as just pressing the controller twice quickly (don't even have to look at anything).
