Tips on getting a "new" Genesis

I test drove a 2016 3.8 AWD - Ultimate (Empire Gray/Black) last weekend. Currently I have an 07 Audi A8. The dealer is asking $34k for it and it has 24,000 miles. Other than two gouges on the back bumper, its in excellent condition.

I was VERY pleased with the handling, power and the intuitive infotainment system.

What do you guys think of the asking price? After some haggling, the came down a grand so we are at $33k for the car. Think thats a good deal?

Seems slightly high I would think. I got a 2015 3.8 AWD Ultimate couple weeks ago with 17k miles on it for $27k so I would think $33k is a tad bit on the higher side.

I am interested in staying in touch, and am looking at the same thing. I have a 2014 6spd manual VW Diesel Passat that can be returned to VW for $29k, after I have used it for 4 years, due to that Diesel emmissions fiasco, I am interested in a G80, let me know about the 15 vs 16 issue on reliability and what the transfer of the warranty or warranty options are? I've been driving my Infiniti G35 for just over 16 years (only about 116,000 miles) and while it runs fine, I'm starting to look for a new car. The Genesis wasn't even on my radar until I saw an article in Consumer Reports that listed it as one of the best cars to buy in March. The list price is more than I want to spend, but one of the local dealers said "Well, how about used?"

So it looks like the off-lease 15s are coming in pretty steadily, and my dealer called me the other day about an Ultimate for $27,000 or so. Just wondering if any of y'all have any advice on pricing, etc.

One other thing, CR gave high marks in reliability to the 16s, 17s & 18s, but not to the 15s. I think I read here that the Hyundai extended warranty is about $1500-1700. How long does that extend the regular warranty? Bumper-to-bumper for 10 years/100k miles? I guess that would settle any reliability issues.

Priorities. How often do you use Car Play? The HUD is in your view every minute you drive.

I'm reconsidering the Ultimate vs the Tech. On the one hand, you get the DIS, the HUD, the automatic sunshade and some interior tweaks, but on the other hand, you don't get Apple CarPlay (or Android Auto).

Android Auto was a must have for me. I was originally going to buy the Ultimate package and I would have loved HUD. But it was a no brainer to get the Tech Package instead. I use AA all the time. For navigation/music and voice commands. The native maps are honestly sorry compared to Google Maps and Waze. Even if you use the hack of doing a Google Search and then send it to the car, it's cumbersome and awkward.

If you don't care about AA, then the Ultimate is a no brainer on a used car since it adds about a grand or so to the car. But once you have used AA, it's tough to go back to a car without it. I have been using it on my Pixel 2 XL in my van and it's just so great to use it in a HU.

In fact, I'm getting the Sony XAV-AX100 installed in my 2002 Infiniti next week.

Correct, the Ultimate package is incompatible with AA because of hardware being different in the head unit. So other packages have AA but not Ultimate. Sucks but oh well

I am used to having a knob to navigate the MMI on my Audi, so I think going with the Ultimate package will be the easiest transition for me.

You can rationalize it any way you want but what exactly would you do with CarPlay that you couldn’t do without it? I can tell you that the HUD is a beauty to behold.

Agree with you 100%. While having AA would have been nice, I think the HUD, bigger 9.2" screen and the extremely classy matte wood finish and aluminum accents are something that make the Ultimate package well worth it for me! It's all about what you deem to be a bigger priority for you when you're getting the car.

I can tell you what I can do with Android Auto that you can't do otherwise. I don't think Car Play is as effective because Siri is not that effective. But even so.

With AA, I get up to date Google Maps which are constantly updated as opposed to paying $200 for the native map

I can get Waze which gives me real and instant traffic updates as opposed to XMTraffic which is spotty at best and for which you have to pay additional money (I believe).

Apart from the timeliness, both are simply miles better than the native maps. You can send POIs to the car using Google Search, but it's awkward and clumsy. Does that also require a subscription to Blue Link?

I don't yet have Gas Buddy, on AA, but I have actually been using gas stations on Waze lately instead of Gas Buddy since it shows them along my route. Gas Buddy used to do that as well earlier but then messed it up in their later UI.

I get streaming from Google Play Music and ability to say aloud which song I want to play or songs composed by someone etc. I can get that through bluetooth as well, but Okay Google never worked very well for me in a moving car (noise) on the phone. Maybe it's not as bad in the Genesis which is a much quieter car. But since I have AA, I have never tested it.

If I have done a search for a place at home, when I get in the car, it shows up right away as a potential destination. If I have an appointment with a business, it pops up as a destination to be selected. Google Assistant is smart and it only gets smarter as it gets to know you better.

I can navigate to a friend's house or call my wife using AA using natural language as opposed to the very stilted native voice recognition. I only tried the native voice control once before I installed AA, and maybe it's not too bad. But I'm sure it can't compete with Google Assistant.

I don't use this feature since I use Google Voice, but it can read out text messages and you can reply using, again, natural speech.

When I drove the V5, I loved HUD. And I was definitely going to get the Ultimate Package. But not at the expense of AA. Again, once you have used AA, it's tough to go back to a system without it.

Spot On. It all depends on what your priority is. For me, it was AA. For you, it was a bigger screen and HUD. Fortunately from the 2018 version, we don't have to make a choice. So, if this car works well for me, then a few years down the line, this will not be an issue.

Just to further clarify, since you mentioned G80:
All 2018 G80's, including Sport/Ultimate with 9.2" display, do indeed have both Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

The AA incompatibility is limited to previous model years with the Ultimate's 9.2" display. It was a different unit that couldn't be upgraded via firmware. That was fixed with the minor 2018 refresh.

For me, I want to get the best feel for the car, but can't afford a new model. If I buy an 2016 Ultimate, I get all the toys but no AA or ACP, but I get everything else. Then in 5 years, I can pick up a used 2018 ultimate G80 and get the benefit of AA or Apple Car Play.

I think they had assembly problems with some of the 2015's, such as not tightening down the fuse box and other electrical grounds properly.

Not sure how much of a difference it makes. but remember the 2015 Genesis (what I currently have) was still branded Hyundai and is not considered the same as a G80, though the basic style is the same.

The 2015-2016 Hyundai models are supposed to be virtually identical to the 2017-18 G80 models. The packages are a little different, and apparently there are some “under the hood” changes in the 18s.

That’s an excellent question, that I don’t have a good answer for. I rent cars 6-10x/year so I’m reasonably familiar with the standard Bluetooth integration. The one time I had a CarPlay enabled Malibu back in January, I didn’t really have time to play with it.

But my assumption is that CarPlay will continue to have new features/capabilities rolled out, while the car’s OS will be static. I may only own this car for a few years, or I might hang onto it for a decade. That would enter into the equation as well.

I would assume that Apple and Google would create better software than Hyundai (or whoever they subcontract to)

The ironic thing is that I’m thinking about this relative to my current vehicle that went on sale a few months after the debut of the iPod, when “hooking electronic stuff into you car” wasn’t really a thing.
