Sooo I bought a 2012 Genesis last week with 174K Miles..I heard the warnings but still bought it.

There are times when I drive, When I go from a stop to go the engine would rev between 1x and 3x and the car would jerk. like if the car missed a few gears and is trying to catch up and quickly jerks. Its intermittent but i'm starting to notice it more and more especially the way it jerks me.

Tried doing a slow acceleration to see if it'll help but not always. So now I'm irritated and thinking of selling the car as is...Haven't even got the plates for it yet and already theirs an issue, very disappointed. If anyone has tips it would be helpful even tips on selling the car. So far I'm thinking either transmission, spark plug, or even belt.

Sounds like it could be transmission slipping or not in gear. Have you checked the fluid level? Is there a trusted tranny shop around you? Let them take it for a ride.

Will tomorrow morning, but what I've found out so far on the car is that theirs no dipstick and i'm thinking it may be a closed unit

It is a closed unit made by Hyundai. Very complicated transmission and should have been serviced twice by the time it got to 174,000 miles. It may not have been serviced since the cost is 500.00 to 800.00 for a transmission service. With proper service these cars will last to well over 250,000 miles.

First thing I'd try is to unwind your deal from the dealership. You may have to choose an exchange unit from their inventory or even get legal help.
Barring that, a simple drain and refill with correct fluid shouldn't be much more than a couple of hundred bucks. If that doesn't solve the problem a used one from an auto recycler is next.

Transmission service at the dealership cost me $260, which in my eyes is a bargain. As mentioned by @dougmcp, I'd make an attempt at getting some sort of resolution from the dealership. Most laws are very vague in regards to used cars, some basically being once you buy it you own it; I've seen some that will offer some sort of 30 day/3k mile guarantee, especially with higher mileage cars.

If they won't cover it, and you want to keep the car, I'd either find a reputable transmission shop and get some repair quotes or start looking at salvage yards. I've seen used gearboxes listed between $600-$1200 on ebay, so that might be your next best option.

Hopefully, you can return the car to the dealer for a refund or at the least for non-out-of-pocket repair work.

Unfortunately, when you buy a used car out of warranty you have to be prepared for anything to happen. Especially with cars with over 100k miles.

Seems like the transmission needs to be rebuilt or hopefully just need new shift solenoids located in the valve body.

Word of advice, never buy a used car with over 100k miles unless you have a repair budget already saved up.

Any chance of "returning/exchanging" the car? Larger dealerships typically have a 14 or 30 day exchange policy.
I'd hate to see someone get stuck with a busted car if they could've swapped it out for something that at least works and they could enjoy or sell.

Oh dang I was also gonna say, yes transmission flush or if you're in a pinch and can't spend the few hundred bucks, grab a bottle of transmission slip fluid like lucas sells. That might be the magic trick, at least until you can save up to have the work done on the transmission. (if you keep it)

2 things are at play here, the transmission has no dipstick, therefore no easy way to put foreign chemicals into it easily. The good part is very few put stuff in their transmission that shouldn't go in there like magic sauce for transmission woes. Personally I would only use the specified Hyundai fluid in these which I believe is something like SP-RR-IV.

For what it’s worth, I just had a remanufactured transmission installed in my 2012, parts and labor were $3400 according to the bill. This was covered by an aftermarket extended warranty by Zurich. The car had around 40,000 miles when the problems got more noticeable. I had it into the dealership before and they replaced some of the solenoids, but that didn’t work. Good luck, I would try and return it to the dealership.

I would never assume any of that. I literally just saw a 1g Genny R Spec on a Toyota lot with 170k miles for sale. No warranty of course. It was pretty on the outside but no telling how it was under the hood or transmission wise.

Federal lemon law is only new cars unless he has a written warranty. State law varies. In my state it depends on the cost of the car. If it sells over $5000 it will be covered 60 days or 3000 miles.
